1 Week 34B Weekly Vyne Bulletin HEADTEACHER S Headlines 10 June 2016 Welcome back after the half term break. Welcome also to four new members of staff; Lucy Grant who is our new Cover Supervisor, Andrea Sombrero who has started work as the Sixth Form Administrator, Liam O Connor who has joined the learning support department and Simon Beale who joins the history department from Cardinal Wiseman School. Mr Beale is yet another ex-vyners student who has returned to us as a teacher and will be leading the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in the sixth form as well as teaching history. This time next week the Ickenham Festival will be in full swing and the Vyners School grounds will be transformed ready for the Gala day and concert. We are honoured to be hosting this fantastic community event again and would urge you to come along. Gates open at 1.00pm and visitors will be able to enjoy a range of stalls, activities, fairground rides, shows and inflatables. After a two hour turnaround the school will once again be the focus of the Ickenham festival when it hosts the Gala concert at 7.15pm. Vyners Swing Band and Fat Busted will be performing before the evening closes with a spectacular fireworks display. Bring along your picnic and chairs and do not forget to buy tickets in advance from Williams Butcher, Sherry s, Swakeleys Estates, online or directly from the festival team. You may have seen the adverse press this week about the school that has come in for criticism for deciding to send its students home for the European Championships football match between England and Wales on Thursday 16 June. I have no idea what the UEFA schedulers were thinking of when they decided that this game should be a 2.00pm kick-off. Inevitably, whatever schools or workplaces decide to do will be unpopular with some quarters; if we carry on with lessons as normal then we will be accused of being party-poopers but if we arrange to show the game then those that do not care about the sport or occasion will feel that it has disrupted the learning of students. After much debate and consultation with staff, students and colleagues in other schools I have decided that we will show the game on the large screen in the school hall. This will mean that all students in Year 7-10 & 12 will be brought to the hall just before kick-off and will miss their session 5 lessons. At half time (approx 2.50pm) students who wish to go home will be supervised in the Quad before being dismissed and those that wish to remain to watch the second half will be supervised in the school hall. Students, and indeed staff, who have no interest in the game, will be able to read or do private study at the tables in the dining room. I am sure it will be a great wholeschool event and I hope that you will be able to support me in my decision whether you are a football fan or not. On the theme of sport, congratulations to Zak Smith in Year 9 who has been selected to represent Hillingdon in the London Youth Games at Water Polo. This is particularly impressive as he has only been playing the sport since February and we wish him all the very best for 18 June when he will be competing at Crystal Palace. Congratulations also to the Mr Abbasi and the Under 13 Boys McKinsey Cup Hardball Cricket Competition who won the qualifying tournament for the West London region this week. This means they have qualified for the Under 13 Boys Finals Day at the North London Cricket Club on Wednesday 6 July. Friends of Vyners need your help. For 2016/17 they are searching for a volunteer to lead the PTA as Chairperson. Many of the present committee are coming to an end with their association at the school, and whilst they have attracted some excellent new volunteers, we are still seeking someone to Chair FOV. David Dent, the current chair, will be on hand to help support and integrate you throughout the year. If you are interested please contact David at quiz@friendsofvyners.co.uk or the school office that will pass your details on. Our next and final meeting of the present school year is on Tuesday 14 June in the conference room at 7.00pm so please come along as a new member or someone who would just like to find out a bit more about the great work FOV do. As you will be aware from previous communication, we are always looking for ways to build links with our ex-students and keep them connected with Vyners after they have left and we believe that a students connection with their school should not have to end when they leave. This year we want to make that belief a reality. As a result, I am delighted to let you know that Vyners School is now working with the education charity Future First, to help us reconnect with our former students and keep in touch with leavers from the day they leave. Our alumni can support us in so many ways - as careers role models, mentors, fundraisers, in-curricular volunteers, governors and more. We need to build this network and reach out to former students who have left over the years. We would love to get you involved so please sign up on the link below. If you are still in touch with any former Vyners students perhaps those who have asked for a reference, neighbours, friends, please them the link below and ask them to sign up to our alumni network. We also have business cards to hand out to former students, parents, governors etc who are often dropping back in to school. They will be available at reception from next week. 2 3 June 2016 Dear Parents / Carers Student lockers Though there are still another few weeks left of this academic year, the school is already beginning the process of planning for the Autumn Term. The School will again be making student lockers available for all students in Years As last year, we will be charging a modest fee of 5 per key-operated locker. This payment covers use of the locker for the whole year, and enables us to keep them in good repair. Keys held by students for this academic year will be taken back in by Form Tutors in the last week of term. Students should have their key ready for return when asked and ensure that they clear their lockers of all belongings before the end of term. Students will not be issued the same locker next academic year as lockers are deliberately situated near tutor rooms. Parents will be asked to pay 5 to cover the cost of replacing lost keys before another locker key is issued. If you wish to book a locker for your son / daughter, please pay the 5 fee via squid, our online payment system. Cash and cheques will not be accepted. Please log onto the system ( and select the trips/activities purse. This payment will be clearly visible (Lockers 2016) and must be specifically selected by their year group NEXT academic year in order to make payment. If you have more than one child in the school, please reserve lockers individually for each child. If you are the parent of a Year 6 student joining us in September, please wait until you have been issued with the new squid account being making payment. Regretfully, the UK Banking system charges 25p for any online transaction under 10 in value. This is an unavoidable cost, unfortunately outside the control of both the school and Squidcard. There are two ways of avoiding this charge and I attach separate guidance explaining how to do this. If you need to pay for a trip or other activity before the summer holiday, please take the opportunity to avoid the charge by paying for multiple items at the same time. Students who have registered their eligibility for Free School Meals before the end of this academic year will be issued a locker key free of charge in September. To guarantee issue of a locker key in the first week of term, the deadline for payment is Friday 19th August Once the initial issue of keys has taken place, the squid offer will be reopened for the rest of the academic year, enabling students who do not initially purchase a locker to obtain one during the year. Yours sincerely James Heale Headteacher
3 Paying for items under 10 via squidcard There are two ways to avoid the 25p charge levied by the UK banking system: 1) Paying for two or more items at the same time Log onto the system as normal and click on the School Trips and Offers Purse Click on as many items you wish to pay for (eg outstanding trip payments, a student locker, art equipment or the annual voluntary DT contribution), then click Make Payment. Complete your transaction by adding your debit / credit card details in the normal way. 2) Adding a 10 top up to the system, regardless of the value of what you want to pay for. Log onto the system as normal but this time, select the top up option on the left hand side.
4 Select Top up using a debit or credit card. Add 10 to the School Trips and other offers purse, click next, then make payment in the usual way. You have now added 10 to the generic trips and other offers account. To complete the transaction, you must return to the front page, where your credit will now be showing. Click on the trips and other offers purse and select the item you specifically wish to buy (eg Lockers 2016 ) in order to make payment. Your account will be charged the exact cost of the item purchased. Any change will be left on the system ready to spend next time.
