2 Census 2010: Preliminary Report on Race In February 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau released preliminary population data for Illinois. Institutional Effectiveness, Planning and Research compiled data for Lake County from the last three decennial censuses to compare 1990, 2000, and 2010 race data. Note that the 2010 data is preliminary and reports only on population and race. Once the U.S. Census Bureau releases 100 percent data, IEPR will report on additional demographics such as income level, employment status, educational attainment, residency status, and ancestry information. Demographic changes likely have implications for enrollment and programming at the College of Lake County, so this preliminary report highlights some of the major numerical changes and racial/ethnic shifts in Lake County s population from As shown in Figure 1, Lake County has had considerable growth over the last 20 years. As of the 2010 census date, the population is 703,462. This amounts to a 36% increase over the 1990 population (516,418). The rate of increase was faster and the population increase was larger during the last decade of the 20 th century than the first decade of the 21 st century. The population increased by 25% or 127,938 in , whereas the population increased by 9% or 59,106 in Figure 1 Total Population 800, , , , , , , , , , , For enrollment purposes, the College of Lake County categorizes students as in-district or out-of-district. Table A on page 2 lists the Lake County population of in-district municipalities by sector for 2000 and The in-district population has grown by 11% (59,031) over the 10-year period. The greatest numerical increase occurred in the northwest quadrant with 38,091 more residents in 2010 than in 2000 (39% increase). This accounts for 65% of the overall in-district growth. Figure 2 displays the role each sector s growth had in the overall population increase. Figure 2 Proportion of Total Growth by Sector N= 59,031 SE 4,947 8% SW 9,105 15% NE 6,888 12% 1 NW 38,091 65%

4 In addition to the northwest s growth, all other sectors also posted increases: the southwest grew by 9,105 (9%), the northeast by 6,888 (3%), and the southeast by 4,947 (4%). The varying rates of increase in these sectors affected the population distribution, as represented by Figures 3 and 4. In 2000, the northwest quadrant had the smallest proportion of the population at 18%. By 2010, it expanded its resident count to represent 23% of the in-district population. The northeast still holds the highest proportion at 35%, though it decreased its share by 3%. The southwest and southeast sectors each decreased by 1 proportional percentage. 5 Figure 5 shows the numerical changes of each racial/ethnic group from The Hispanic and Asian populations have increased significantly every decade, while the White and Black populations have maintained their numerical presence. White residents have comprised the largest racial/ethnic group through all three reporting periods. However, the overall population growth in relation to each group s population change has affected the distribution of race. Figures 6, 7, and 8 on the following page show the Lake County population distribution by race for 1990, 2000, and 2010, respectively. Note: "Hispanic or Latino" includes all persons of Hispanic origin regardless of race. The other categories listed include all persons of that race who are not Hispanic or Latino. 4

7 While the majority of Lake County residents are White, their share of the population has significantly decreased. While increasing 7% over the 20 year period (despite a 3% decrease over ), Whites decreased from 83% of the population in 1990 to 74% in 2000 to 65% in Though the largest of the six ethnic categories, their 28,135 person increase stands as only the third largest numerical increase over 20 years. Asians, with the second largest numerical increase, grew by 32,047 more than tripling their 1990 headcount and numbering 44,182 in Their share of the Lake County population grew from 2% in 1990 to 4% in 2000 to 6% in The most drastic changes occurred for the Hispanic/Latino population. They numbered 139,987 in 2010 increasing by 101,417 since 1990 and more than tripling their Lake County population in those 20 years. Their share of the population has spiked from 8% in 1990 to 14% in 2000 to 20% in They are the second largest ethnic group in Lake County, with 1 in 5 residents being of Hispanic/Latino origin. They account for 80% of Lake County s total population growth from 2000 to 2010 and 54% of the growth over 20 years. American Indians and Alaskan natives are the smallest ethnic group, totaling just 1,058 (less than.01% of the population) in They ve increased by 5% of their population since The Other category, including those of racial groups not listed or multi-racial persons, has increased dramatically. Only 402 persons were recorded in this category in 1990, but 12,545 were reported in They are the second smallest racial category, totaling just 2% of the population in
