Computer, Phone, and Network Mike Green, AVP and CIO Guidelines at Lipscomb University Lipscomb University (615)
Open Lab Computing Availability There are about 250 student- accessible computers across the campus including a Mac/ Windows dual boot lab (Ezell) Each Residence hall has at least 1 computer lab available 24 hours a day. All labs are equipped with a printer Software used in labs Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Windows 7 this fall) Microsoft Office 2007 (Office 2010 available this fall) for Windows, Microsoft Office 2008 for Macs Word, Excel, PowerPoint primarily used in class assignments 2
Individual Computers Computer Purchase Laptop required; two models listed that we recommend and support Dell Studio GHZ Intel Core i5-520m, 4GB Memory, 320GB disk Apple Macbook 2.4GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB Memory, 250GB disk There are links to discount sites for Dell and Apple and Microsoft discounted software at Ask your Department Head whether you need a PC or Mac Macbook running Parallels SW ($65) will allow both Mac and PC applications 3
Individual Computers The computer MUST have: antivirus protection for the computer. Windows Update Services enabled (if Windows- based) Anti- spyware protection (if Windows- based) Recommendations Home- owners/renters insurance to cover theft Keep your room locked when leaving your laptop Security cables are recommended to anchor to desk in residence room 4
Phone Guidelines Housing students are expected to provide their own cell phone as phone service is not provided in the dorms. There are phones located in central locations of all buildings for use in an emergency. All major cell phone services are available on campus (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T- Mobile) Lipscomb discounts available for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint Internet phone (Skype) is supported 5
Networking The purpose of the network is to support the academic and administrative programs of the university. Dorm network connectivity is available at no charge, but it is subject to the security policies of the university. OpenDNS provides content filtering for pornography, gambling, illegal drugs, etc. For security purposes, the student network is physically separated from the internal network. A firewall restricts access to non- academic services with demonstrated security and/or liability problems, such as IRC, peer- to- peer file sharing, and some gaming. Clearwire has a wireless service in Nashville that offers internet service ($65/month). 6
Networking (Residence Halls) What NOT to bring: Cable- modem router (with or without wireless capabilities) Wireless access point Airport Base Station Any device operating at 2.4 GHz Wireless game controllers Wireless karaoke machine Apple Wireless Time Capsule (backups) Must disable wireless access on wireless printers 7
Networking (User Accounts) User accounts are automatically generated for all students. The network user account is used to log onto all Lipscomb resources including my.lipscomb.edu, student , Blackboard, student wireless network, and campus lab computers. To look up the username or change the password, go to Students must have their Lipscomb ID number (i.e. L ) in order to use this web service. We require the password to meet strong password requirements but they do not expire. Passwords can be reset at or using the kiosk in the Computer Center Lobby (bottom floor of Beaman Library - Ezell side) The student must provide a USB flash drive/memory stick to store personal files such as class assignments and papers, or use free cloud services. Student storage space on Lipscomb s Google Apps service allows for a combined usage of 7.5 GB of mail and file storage. Also great for collaboration. 8
Wireless Student Network (LUStudentNet) Wireless network covers the entire campus, including all green areas. Coverage is g/n. User authentication is required to connect. Students must set the network password prior to attempting to connect for the first time. Gaming is supported only on the wireless network. Directions for connecting your laptop or game console can be found at 9
Networking (Printing) Monochrome Laser printers are available in each dorm lab and computer classroom. Printers are accessible from school- owned machines and the student wired and wireless networks. Page quotas are in place to reduce waste. 400 pages/student/semester Additional pages can be purchased in the computer center office ($.05/ page) A pay per page color printer is available outside The Connection (Post Office). 10
Networking ( ) Accounts An address is provided in the Lipscomb domain: for example, The Lipscomb account will be the primary method of contact for University information. The account is a Gmail account with quota exceeding 7 GB of storage. The username/password for the account is the same as the Lipscomb network username/password 11
Technology Support Getting Help: The Computer Center maintains a Student Help Desk to assist students with connecting their machines to the network in room 145 of the Computer Center. Hours will be posted on the door and on my.lipscomb.edu. Student Help Desk employees will also be in the residence halls to provide tech support during Quest week. 12
