1 1 STUDENT GOVERNMENT Open Meeting Minutes - March 21, 2014 I. Call meeting to order and establish of quorum at 12:08 P.M. Roll Call: Present II. 2 2 VII. Old Business 1. Rough Rider Week and End of year BBQ Update: Dominique, Dawna and Amanda Schedule for Rough Rider Week is announced: April 14 th through 18 th Monday Door decorating contest, voting Tuesday: Advisement day and BBQ, Skills and Student Government all working together. o Culinary Arts Club will provide the food. Cost to be split between SG & Student Activities o Menu BBQ, pulled pork, etc. o Student Government is not required to be there to serve. o Tues: Skills USA will animate a Scavengers Hunt. Students will take a picture of themselves at each of the stations Prizes range from: car wheel rotation, car wash, etc. o Changed the name: to Registration Round-Up which will be April 15 th from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. o There will be a table to vote for Mr. and Miss Roughrider. (Working out the details for prizes) Criteria for the Mr. and Miss Rough Rider nomination; students must be full time student with a 2.0 GPA, Provide a brief Bio, and obtain 25 signatures from current students at LCC. o Voting for Mr. and Miss RR Will begin Monday through Wednesday of that week. Wednesday: Luna Spirit Day wear your favorite Luna apparel o College Night at JC s pizza Need to finalize this with JC s 2:00 today 3/21/14 Joaquin is one of the owners, and they pretty much facilitate it, but we are responsible for organizing it activities, bands, face painting, comics etc o Senators need to take college night by the reins o Wednesday at 4:00 pm is the last day for ballots - Maybe meet at Student Government to count the ballots. Thursday and Friday are the games o Thursday and Friday are the games and coronation of Mr. and Miss Roughrider April 17 th at the end of games: Need Student Government to go from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. to do the popcorn and snow cone machine and we need to figure out how to work the snow cone machine Noteworthy: o Flyers are already distributed. o Foundation: Melissa will donate popcorn for games o Hopefully our promotional items will be here for giveaway. o Emcee: Dominique

3 3 o Note: Coach Antonio said baseball players had no idea about Rough Rider Week. o Who will be present today at 2:00 PM to go to JC s Pizza? Billy, Vanessa, Dominique, Dawna, Evette, Frederick, & Victor say they will be present. o Another thing we have been trying to do is get scholarships for whoever is running for Mr. and Miss Roughrider. ACTION: Need to get together a committee to work solely on getting a scholarship for Mr. and Miss Roughrider ACTION: Scholarship proposal for next year, foundation will be involved. ACTION: Need to establish where to have the voting at and who will collect the ballots. ACTION: Need to get the snow cone maker. 2. Board of Trustees Update: Victor o Graduation will be here at Luna with tent. o Discussion about increase in tuition. Looking at: $3.00 a credit hour 9% to 13% increase o Governor signed the lottery bill. Meeting again April 1 st at El Valle o Student Government is encouraged to attend Board of Trustee meetings 3. Supplies and Promotional Items Update: o Humanities donated a box of items. Debbie Trujillo will donate too. o Promotional items: Tumblers with straws- teal with student gov. logo, compact mirrors teal Luna logo, foam baseball bats for roughrider week, hand sanitizer, chap stick, grocery totes, flash drives, o Heads Up for Student Government: In the fall set up fees for promotional items would be reduced to around $10 instead of $50.00 if order is identical and placed within this calendar year. ACTION: Lorenza to draft thank you note to Humanities for donated items, give to Victor to review and sign. 4. Game room Update: Victor o Did talk to Dr. Martinez, but right now the room is being used and he is going to meet with professors to see if they could use another room and if so, we can move our items in. If they don t move this semester they will be moved by end of semester for fall o If we get the game room we can include that in the flyer for Rough Rider s week and also notify Skills USA o Victor will give another update as soon as Dr. Martinez calls ACTION: Need to check for work study position. o Work study would not be in effect till the fall not sure about summer.

4 4 5. Skills Update o 2 nd to the 5 th of April, Skills will be gone to competition. o Will be doing Rough Rider Week and also the Egg Hunt for Golf Course o Scavenger Hunt for Registration Roundup. o Trash collection at Storrie Lake went well. o Victor thanks for Skills for their participation. o Good Luck in the Competition! 6. Community Service Update: Dawna o Easter Egg. Spoke to Tommy Ortiz and need to get everyone on the evening of April 14 th to stuff eggs and on the 19 th to hide eggs. o Meeting at K-Bobs Tuesday - April 8 th at 6:00 PM to discuss organization and volunteer efforts. Victor will attend. 7. Recycling campaign update: Kevin o Kevin apologizes, has doctor appointment. Lorenza gives update. Solid wastes director will contact Kevin about seeing if recycling containers can be distributed to Luna. 8. Food Pantry: Victor o Discussion about starting a food pantry; other universities and colleges are doing this. Start donations for food, nonperishable items. o Someplace to go to once or twice a week, specifically for Luna students that need it. We should look into this. It s not a drive. This will be continuous over time. o Victor to see with Dr. Campos about a place to store these items. We could even store in our office o Skills: Need to organize drive maybe once a month to distribute these items. Dominique makes a Motion to begin a food pantry/ 2 nd Evette/Motion carries o Victor will get to work on initiating this practice. Will speak with Jessie about getting an article in the Luna Light. o Skills would like to help out with this. o Campus wide effort. Need motion to increase Open PO by $100 at the book store. Frederick makes motion to increase Open PO at Bookstore by $100.00/2nd Dominque/Motion carries IX. New Business 1. Proposed dates for new Student Elections preparation academic year. o Rules: cannot petition until hours are confirmed o Earliest voting 2 nd week in September.

5 5 o We need to plan elections for next year. We need these plans by next meeting. Amanda and Dawna can print flyers. o We need to have all dates in place by next meeting. o Student Government members are in office until September. Student Government members may be contacted by Victor. ACTION: We need to plan elections for next year. We need these plans by next meeting 2. Next Student Government Meeting Date: Dominque makes motion to set next Meeting Date: April 25, Noon/2 nd Frederick Motion carries X. Open Floor o Last Student Government Meeting - Discussion about pizza gathering. o Frederick: April 3 Thursday at 9:30 am, Frederick will be bringing students from Anton Chico school to Luna. Highlands are going out there April 2 nd to do a carnival & week of May 5 th. o Skills Walk Through: Frederick: o Finishing up report and still need to speak with some students to see if there have been any changes. Every piece of equipment that was at issue has been fixed as well as student issues; everything has been addressed. Frederick recognized for a good job. o Next Meeting: April 11 th for people to get in their RSVPs for graduation so we will have a final number of graduates. o Phi Theta Kappa Fundraiser Possibility of Student Government to purchase roses from Phi Theta Kappa. Lorenza to get details from Cindy Armijo. ACTION: Thank you Card for Robert Ortiz for gavel. ACTION: Thank you from Student Government for office supplies.
