The Curriculum You re an expert in your field, but you may not have had the opportunity to fully understand how an entire organization comes together. This curriculum is designed to get you well versed in the broader picture of business, so you can immediately add value to your organization and your clients. From one of the very first courses when you are challenged to think like a CEO and consider how to make strategic decisions to maximize success the curriculum gives you a deep understanding of what it takes to be a strategic thinker. The Career Path Each year, the class is made up of candidates from all backgrounds from health care specialists to computer scientists; from engineers to marketers. And everyone seeks a different path, whether it s a higher-profile role in their existing company or changing career paths entirely. Regardless of background, how you advance is entirely dependent on your brand and your network. Throughout the program, we will work with you to help you achieve your career goals. The Admissions Process Candidates in the MBA program are motivated, thrive on finding solutions, and push back on status quo. It s what gets us excited to come to work everyday to work with students who have fresh perspectives, challenge us and help shape the program for future students. As such, we have a rigorous selection process to find the right type of candidate that is best suited for the UBC MBA program. 1

3 What the Weekends Look Like Classes are delivered every two to three weekends, at the Point Grey campus, as follows: Friday 5:00pm 9:30pm Saturday 8:30am 5:30pm Sunday 8:30am 5:30pm Each module typically alternates between 2 weekends, with its respective exam usually scheduled a week or two after the last class. Business Strategy Integration, a hands-on experience exploring case studies and preparing a detailed business plan, is woven throughout the early months of the program to bring your learning together with practice. Here is a sample of what two consecutive weekends may look like: Weekend A Date + Time Course Friday, March 10 Organizational Behaviour Saturday, March 11 Corporate Strategy Sunday, March 12 Organizational Behaviour How it Works Weekend B Date + Time Friday, March 31 Saturday, April 1 Course Operations + Logistics BSI Foundation The Part-time UBC MBA is built with the same curriculum as its Full-time counterpart, but instead of coming to school everyday, you ll be in class on the weekends. The program begins January 2017 and takes 28 months to complete, finishing in May The UBC MBA is challenging. Classes and exams are delivered through intensive weekend sessions, at the Point Grey campus, approximately every two to three weeks. Combine this with additional course work outside these weekends, plus your Monday-Friday job, it is a program that requires dedication and commitment. But the rewards are big, and they reveal themselves throughout the program, not just after. The program is designed to give you a broad spectrum in every aspect of business, so what you learn on the weekends can easily be applied the following week in your job be it a presentation, brief, or budget strategy. 4 Your Faculty Studying at Sauder means you ll be learning cutting edge business from the very people who helped create it. Sauder professors are among the highest calibre in the world and their work has made our school one of the top in the world for its business research (Ranked #20 worldwide, Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2016). This research has not only been integral to creating impact in organizations locally and globally, but it has also shaped the education learned in the classroom. Here are a few of the professors you ll be learning from and a sample of what kind of work you ll be doing: Joy Begley Dr. Joy Begley is an Associate Professor in the Accounting Division and is a researcher at Sauder s KPMG Research Bureau in Financial Reporting. In 2014, she was one of the faculty members that earned over $2 million in funding from federal research councils for her work in the area of improving sustainability of corporate pension plans in the face of corporate bankruptcy risk. In her course, Financial Reporting, you will learn to read and interpret financial statements with an appreciation for how managers can use their discretion to affect the reported numbers. Using sample financial statements from publicly traded companies, you will learn how to adjust the financial statement numbers to undo accounting distortions. The Part-time MBA students bring a wonderful energy to the classroom. Their work experience gives their questions currency and relevance, enriching the discussion for all. Ann Stone Ann Stone is a Lecturer at the Sauder School of Business, where she teaches courses in marketing and strategy for graduate, undergraduate and Executive Education programs. She has more than 25 years of C-level marketing experience at Coca-Cola, Papa Murphy s Pizza, Church s Chicken and Dairy Queen. She has also worked for S.C. Johnson & Son, Pizza Hut and has run her own marketing firm. In her course, Business Strategy Integration, you will develop the critical thinking required to solve business problems from a holistic perspective - across business functions, institutions (business, government, civic society), geographies, and business cultures. Working on cases and a business model presentation, in assigned groups, gives you the practice required to think and work more strategically. Raj Raina Dr. Raj Raina is an Adjunct Professor in the Strategy and Business Economics Division, and brings over 25 years of consulting and operations experience. He has provided consulting in strategic management for organizations such as The World Bank, IBM, International Development Research Centre, and companies across the globe, specializing in strategy, emerging markets, private equity and startups. In his course, Management Consulting and Corporate Decision Support, you will learn how to combine creativity, analytical frameworks and pragmatism to develop winning solutions to clients challenges. The course emphasizes individual and team case analyses, and you will be expected to leverage your newfound knowledge for a multitude of issues. The Part-time MBA students bring diverse experiences and mindsets to the class, building narratives that are core to discovering Part-time MBA students are great fun to teach, as they bring a level of everyday maturity from their jobs and other assignments which bring a robust and interesting conversation and developing new solutions. 5 Start Thinking Like Top-Level Management Each student comes in with their own career goals, and with the UBC MBA you can customize the curriculum to your specific field of interest. Regardless of whether your goal is to work at a start-up or a large corporation, having an understanding of the role different business functions play and how they play together is an extremely valuable skill to have. So, at graduation, you will not only be an expert at your job, but you ll also be trained to think about business on a holistic level. Our courses are built on giving students constant opportunity to showcase their analytical and problem-solving skills. Active learning is how we work. When you show up to class, you will be expected to be prepared, contribute, defend your opinions and support others. As the program progresses, you ll find yourself thinking more and more like a top-level manager and making critical decisions that can affect the success of a company. Here are some examples of projects where you ll put those skills to test: Business Strategy Integration Integrated business strategy underpins the first year of the program. The goal of this year-long course is to develop your skills in managerial decision-making across disciplines, perspectives and cultures. Integrated case days, presentations to client and business case coursework are key components to achieving this goal. Capstone In this 3-day program finale, students will be faced with a significant business challenge to solve. Using the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program, teams will work to develop integrated, innovative solutions, which will be presented to a panel of business leaders. 6 7

7 Gain a Different Perspective From The World Global Immersion Experience This optional 2-week international project enables you to gather first-hand knowledge about the culture and commerce of another country, and develop the confidence to work in the global marketplace. You can choose to participate in Global Immersion in Year 3 of the program. Past locations included Santiago, Copenhagen, London and Singapore. Study Abroad Program You also have the opportunity to study abroad in the spring or summer of Year 2 of the program. Study abroad program lengths vary from one to six weeks, with a wide variety of locations available such as Copenhagen Business School, ESSEC Business School in Paris, and Vienna University of Economics and Business. From Your Peers Just like in any organization, you ll find yourself working alongside people from all backgrounds. In fact, the Career Centre, whose expertise includes gaining insight on what employers around the world are looking for, has designed some of the mandatory courses in the program. Along with dedicated MBA career coaches, there are a range of career services available to you, including: Salary Negotiation Simulation: We ll work with you to develop a personalized strategy you can use to negotiate your salary. MBA Mentor Programs: Gaining insight and connection from someone in senior management is invaluable. We ll pair you with a mentor who is able to develop your personal leadership goals. Interview Skill Development: Whether your goal is to change department or company, it may have been a while since you last had an interview. Through our coaching and interview training, we ll help you articulate your value and skills to land that job. Industry Project A potential game changer in your career. You will design a project of your own choosing and work with a Faculty Advisor to bring it to life. If you choose a project within your organization, you can imagine how your initiative and value will be exemplified to your boss. Or you can explore a project in a field you ve always been interested in. The project can help confirm if it s the direction you want to go in. Others have had a new venture idea in the works and would like the resources to help with developing a business plan or feasibility study. Entrepreneurial Project Some MBA candidates join the program with a new venture idea in the works, and with the Entrepreneurial Project, they are able to utilize the knowledge and resources at the school to help develop a business plan or feasibility study for their idea. 9 Admissions Information The Part-time UBC MBA seeks bright, talented, enthusiastic and creative individuals who are committed to a high level of achievement in their academic, personal, and professional lives. The MBA selection process is rigorous and guided by the following criteria: Academic Achievement Professional Experience Minimum Requirements A 4-year Bachelor s degree from an accredited institution is required with a B average.* *As degrees/grading systems differ widely between countries, applicants with degrees from outside North America should review country-specific requirements listed on the UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies website: Minimum 2 years of full-time work experience gained after graduation from a Bachelor s degree. Competitive Requirements B+ or 76% or 3.3 GPA 5 years+ of full-time work experience.
