Outstanding PowerPoint Presentations at Saint Mary s University Center
The University Center s projection systems are formatted for 16:9 presentations.
When designing your PowerPoint, Select Page Setup Slides sized for: On-screen 16:9
A presentation with a 4:3 format ratio will display with black side bars. Photo:

Design - Formatting Suggestions Use White or Yellow Font on a Navy or Black Background
Dark Text on Dark Background: difficult to see Dark Text on White Background: stark white adversely affects some viewers Corporate or Personal Colors: can add flair -- as long as there is contrast with text
Design - Formatting Suggestions Use Sans Serif Fonts Sized at no less than 36 point Arial Franklin Gothic Verdana at 36 point
Design - Formatting Suggestions Keep text brief: unless citing a quote, no sentences!
Don t Do This! This is an example of a slide with way too much text. Every word the presenter plans to say is on this slide. -- This sub-point is too small, the folks at the back of the room will not be able to read this. The bullet points have too many words. I could have just written use few words in bulleted lists which is six words instead of 25. This slide looks junky and cluttered with too many words and text colors.
Design - Formatting Suggestions Be mindful of word placement and spacing when text covers more than one line.
Example of poor text spacing. Movies can and do have tremendous influence in shaping young lives in the realm of entertainment towards the ideals and objectives of normal adulthood. Walt Disney
Example of good text spacing. Movies can and do have tremendous influence in shaping young lives in the realm of entertainment towards the ideals and objectives of normal adulthood. Walt Disney
Design - Formatting Suggestions Have bulleted lists appear singularly as you speak about each item, otherwise the audience is reading ahead of your speaking.

Your Logo Bulleted List Title use multiple slides and advance on click option -- or...
Your Logo Bulleted List Title... use one slide with the Effect Options tool.
Design - Formatting Suggestions Use images to support your words / speech.
Example: Display this slide image (with no text) while reporting how targeted goals have been achieved.
Example: Use images creatively to emphasize text and speech. Team + Effort = Success
Design - Formatting Suggestions Be sure subject of photo is coming into, not going out of, slide.
Photo: U.S. White House This is a poor use of image, the world leaders are walking out of the slide, away from the text.
This is better, having the world leaders walk into the slide, toward the text. Photo: U.S. White House
Either flip the image to have the subject coming into the slide or move it to the opposite side of the slide. Poor use of image. Dukedestiny01.jpg: Janneke Vreugdenhil
Either flip the image to have the subject coming into the slide or move it to the opposite side of the slide. Better use of (flipped) image. Dukedestiny01.jpg: Janneke Vreugdenhil
Design - Formatting Suggestions Use charts & graphs instead of words.
