1 2Learn.ca Professional Development Sessions March 2013 Format note: s/ and sessions are provided at no cost. s can be full or half day. Combinations of presentations can be requested to create a half or full day. Please call for more details or personalization of sessions to meet District Professional Development needs. [ ] Digital Life Skills 1. Copyright & Ownership: Impact on Teaching and Learning Practices Learn about the new copyright law passed in October 2012, and how it affects teachers in their practice. Specific steps will be outlined to address the question for offline and online resources Can I use it?. Also included will be fair dealing and special exemptions for education. 2. A picture is worth a thousand words but is it free to use? As humans, some of our strongest emotional responses come from visual cues. Images are so prominent in our digital world. As teachers and creators, how do we responsibly access those images that help tell our story? In this 2Learn.ca session we will explore the process of acquiring free images, stock and royalty free images, creative commons images, and ensuring that images we are using are freely available. 3. Essential Digital Life Skills and Practices for Mobile Devices What considerations are specific to the teaching of digital life skills when students bring their own devices to schools? The 2Learn.ca Team will explore the key elements to be aware of when supporting students with their own devices in a classroom setting and establishing effective classroom practices. 4. Social Networking and Education Applications and Implications The elements of social networking sites are an emerging feature of many online educational and pseudo-educational sites. In this 2Learn.ca session, the identification of those elements and their effective application in the classroom will be demonstrated. Implications for instructional strategies will be highlighted. 5. Your Digital Presence and 21 Century Classroom Technologies For youth, social media and emerging technologies are embedded in their lives their offline and online lives have converged. This 2Learn.ca session is about empowering educators to support the development of their students digital life skills and digital identity. Within this context, participants will explore online teaching resources and student tools, in preparation for developing an action plan for incorporating digital life skills into daily classroom practice. Moving Theory into Practice 6. Visual Literacy to Promote Higher Order Thinking To successfully connect the dots at any level in cyberspace means we must be literate, both digitally and visually. [Jones-Kavalier] As we aspire to have our students become higher-order thinkers, how can we support their ability to interpret, analyze and evaluate what they see? This 2Learn.ca session will focus on how teachers can develop instructional strategies to support the vital skill of visual literacy, the ability to read images. 2Learn.ca Education Society 1

La Litératie visuelle avec 2Learn.ca ( French edition of session above) Au cours de cet atelier, les participants discuteront et exploreront la définition de la litératie visuelle, comment trouver des images, l'importance du droit d'auteur, Creative Commons et la citation, l'intégration d'images dans divers sujets, des stratégies de questionnement, la litératie visuelle, la taxonomie de Bloom et enfin comment utiliser des images pour les modèles d'enquête. 8. I Sent Them To a Website/APP, But Did They Learn Anything? Learn about instructional strategies to effectively use online interactive and APPS to scaffold instruction for all students, engaging them individually and in groups, and providing students with diverse ways to construct their learning. In this 2Learn.ca session, the use of entrance and exit passes with online resources will also be demonstrated. 9. Technology for Inquiry? A Perfect Fit. We often take for granted the Inquiry Process and its effective use in our classrooms. Participants in this 2Learn.ca session will be able to take the Inquiry Process further by planning and implementing inquiry with a variety of technology resources. We will demonstrate a variety of technology tools that students can use to enrich their Inquiry Process experience. 10. Moving Past What You See How can we use multimedia to encourage students to come up with good questions? How do we spark interest with our students and move our students to ask higher order thinking questions using images? This 2Learn.ca session will provide teachers with technology resources and strategies that will engage your students in thinking more critically when viewing images. 11. The PBL (Project-Based Learning) Experience Project-based learning (PBL) is an exciting alternative to traditional projects generally practiced in classrooms. The difference between projects and PBL will be outlined. This workshop will guide teachers through the steps in creating a successful PBL project, including design, implementation and assessment. The 2Learn.ca Team will also demonstrate a variety of strategies and technology tools that students and teachers can use to enrich their PBL experience. Strategies for assessing a variety of products will also be shared. 12. Critical Thinking and online Media Our students live in an online multimedia world. How can we as teachers leverage this access to multimedia to encourage higher order thinking? How can we effectively use online media to scaffold instruction for all students, engage them individually and in groups, and provide students with diverse ways to construct their learning? This 2Learn.ca session will provide teachers with resources and instructional strategies that will actively engage their community of big thinkers within and beyond the classroom. Time for exploration with colleagues and planning for classroom instruction will be provided. 13. Robotics in Education In this session, participants will learn how to integrate robotics into their classroom activities in a constructivist approach, explore student robotics interaction activities, learn about educational resources and design tasks. This session will focus on Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics, a tool applicable for students from elementary to post-secondary. 14. Google Earth as a Student Production Tool Explore ways to use this dynamic tool in your Language Arts, Science and Social Studies classes. This 2Learn.ca session includes the use of new Google Earth plug-ins, support websites, Google Lit Trips and enabling students to create their own Google Earth interaction. 3 15. Assessment and Web 2.0 When we provide students with choice, engagement increases. Technology provides new opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of formats. This session will look at some of the possibilities Web 2.0 tools offer students for choice. Strategies for making assessment of a variety of products manageable for teachers will also be shared. Digital Media Creation 16. Online Image Editing for Teachers Join 2Learn.ca in this session to learn more about what online image editing tools are available and how students can use them in their own projects and presentations. Participants will experience a hands-on interaction, coming away with an edited image of their choice. 17. Comic Creation as a Writing Tool It s no secret that students love comics. There are a wide variety of comic creators freely available online. In this 2Learn.ca session, participants will discover the potential of using comic creation in their language arts program. Strategies for scripting, storyboarding, illustrating and publishing will be included. 18. Lights, Camera, Action! Student Productions Are you looking for video editing tools to use in your classroom with your students? In this session participants will be shown a variety of student and teacher friendly online and off line video editing tools that can be used in the upper elementary to secondary classrooms. Ideas for classroom use and sharing videos with others will also be discussed. We will also explore the issues around fair dealing when creating videos 19. Making the Most of Graphic Organizers with Your Students Organizing ideas in a project can be a powerful step in preparing for Project Based Learning. In this 2Learn.ca session, participants will explore an array of web 2.0 tools that they can easily use with their students to make connections between ideas. 20. Visualization Tools: Beyond the Clouds Using visualization tools can be more than just creating a word cloud. In this 2Learn.ca session we will explore a variety of visualization tools and teaching strategies for their classroom use, as well as engaging students in demonstrating their learning. 21. Infographics, more than just a graphic. Would you like to use Infographics in your classroom with your students? Not sure where to begin? In this 2Learn.ca session we will explore how Infographics can be used to engage students in classroom discussions. Participants will also be shown a variety of tools that students can use to create their own Infographics. 22. Storyboarding with Digital Tools Join the 2Learn.ca team as we share digital storyboarding tools to use with digital storytelling projects. The session will focus on organizers to use with students to set up their stories. 23. Digital Storytelling in a 21 st Century Classroom In this session participants will gain a greater understanding of Digital Storytelling including a step-by-step creation process, a review of the online tools and resources, and formulating an action plan for integrating Digital Storytelling effectively in the classroom. 2Learn.ca Education Society 3
4 24. An Introduction to Google Docs/Google Drive Google Docs offers powerful possibilities for educational purposes. Users can integrate data between documents, spreadsheets, presentations, graphic organization tools, and many more applications within the Google suite. In this session, participants will learn the basics of Google Docs/Google Drive, and how they may begin planning to run a paperless classroom. 25. Using Google Forms in School Google Forms is a very simple tool that allows users to create individualized surveys or response forms, wherein responses are automatically populated within online spreadsheets. In this session, participants will learn how to integrate Google Forms in their classroom for student assessment, parent responses, and many more activities. 26. Google Drawings for Students Google Drawings is a powerful collaboration tool that enables users to work together on digital graphic organization projects. In this session, participants will learn how Google Drawings can be integrated in their classroom for their students, and used to help students with their projects and learning outcomes. 27. Creating Google Sites for Classroom Management Integrating Google Sites with other Google apps, teachers are able to create an inclusive classroom management portal for their students. In this session, participants will learn about site creation and personalization options, privacy settings, and ways in which Google Sites can interact with other apps to create a one-stop immersive environment for students. 28. Integrating Multimedia with Google In this session, participants will learn more about using Google multimedia applications within the classroom, including videos, photo albums, maps, RSS reader and Google Earth - with respect to privacy and copyright considerations. 29. Using Google Calendars in Education Google Calendar is so much more than just a calendar; it is a powerful tool for educators. In this session, participants will learn about creating lesson plans, integrating Google Docs, and organizing schedules with students, colleagues and parents on Google Calendar. 30. eportfolios Theory into Practice using Google Apps - Part I Participants will be introduced to the theory behind eportfolios, including the use of continual eportfolios as metacognitive and assessment strategies. Participants will learn ways in which they may begin to use Google Apps and other Web 2.0 tools to construct student learning and assessment objects. 31. eportfolios Theory into Practice using Google Apps - Part II Bridging all information from the previous four Google webinars, participants will learn how to construct a student eportfolio using various Google Apps and exemplars of other Web 2.0 tools. 32. Teaching With Acrobat (PDF) Files This introduction to Adobe Acrobat X Pro will provide participants with a foundational understanding of the portable document format and its uses for teachers. This session is aimed at the teaching professional who has installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro or the Adobe Acrobat X Pro trial. 2Learn.ca Education Society 4
5 33. Teacher Created Acrobat (PDF) Materials Participants will learn several ways in which they can create their own pdf documents and use them in a typical classroom setting. This session is aimed at the teaching professional who has installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro or the Adobe Acrobat X Pro trial. 34. Manipulating Acrobat (PDF) Files For Use In The Classroom This session will equip participants with the skills to make changes to their pdf documents. Specifically, page manipulation, preparing for print and web output and constructing Acrobat Portfolios will all be covered. This session is aimed at the teaching professional who has installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro or the Adobe Acrobat X Pro trial. 35. Creating and Using Acrobat (PDF) Forms For Assessment Student assessment in the form of checklists and rubrics can be a collaborative effort using Acrobat. Join 2Learn.ca to learn how to create and manage Adobe forms. This session is aimed at the teaching professional who has installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro or the Adobe Acrobat X Pro trial. 36. Adobe InDesign 1 - An Introduction For Educators By deconstructing a 2Learn.ca newsletter, participants will review hands-on elements of the InDesign interface and learn some best practices in setting preferences and starting a new document layout. We'll discuss needs particular to press and web output as well as tips on file structure for InDesign projects. This session is aimed at school and district personnel who have installed Adobe InDesign C5 or CS6 or the Adobe InDesign CS6 trial and consider themselves a basic or new user. 37. Adobe InDesign 2 - Education Newsletters Building on the first session, participants will begin to construct a personalized newsletter for school or classroom use. Layout concepts that include the use of boilerplate content, images and text will all be covered. This session is aimed at the school and district personnel who has installed Adobe InDesign C5 or CS6 or the Adobe InDesign CS6 trial and consider themselves a basic or new user. 38. Adobe InDesign 3 - Interactive School Newsletters Part I Adding interactive elements to school newsletters will capture reader attention. In this first session on interactivity, participants will learn how to utilize hyperlinks and bookmarks, as well as how to export their document as both an interactive pdf and as a print pdf. This session is aimed at the school and district personnel who has installed Adobe InDesign C5 or CS6 or the Adobe InDesign CS6 trial and consider themselves a basic or new user. 39. Adobe InDesign 4 - Interactive School Newsletters Part II Adding interactive elements to school newsletters will capture reader attention. In this second session on interactivity, participants will learn how to create functional buttons, add video and sound as well as how to incorporate a slideshow of images. This session is aimed at the school and district personnel who has installed Adobe InDesign C5 or CS6 or the Adobe InDesign CS6 trial and considers themselves a basic or new user. 40. Adobe Photoshop 1 - Basic Color Theory and Visual Effects Many teachers are generating their own digital content for use in classroom practice and would like to enhance their visuals with a professional touch. In this first of two sessions, participants will learn some basic color theory as well as how to make professional-grade buttons, ribbons, banners, icons and shadow effects. This session is aimed at the teaching professional who has installed Adobe Photoshop C5 or CS6 or the Adobe Photoshop CS6 trial and considers themselves an intermediate or advanced user with a basic grasp Photoshop skills. 2Learn.ca Education Society 5

Adobe Photoshop 2 - Working with Layers and Layer Styles Many teachers are generating their own digital content for use in classroom practice and would like to enhance their visuals with a professional touch. In this second of two sessions, participants will learn how to work with and manipulate layers and layer styles. This session is aimed at the teaching professional who has installed Adobe Photoshop C5 or CS6 or the Adobe Photoshop CS6 trial and considers themselves an intermediate or advanced user with a basic grasp of Photoshop skills. Beyond Classroom Walls: Online Collaboration 42. Social Networking in the Classroom How can teachers use social networking to enhance the classroom experience? This 2Learn.ca session will engage participants in exploring a selection of social networking tools that they can use in the classroom and beyond to actively engage and connect students. Practical considerations and strategies will be shared. 43. Online Collaborations in the Secondary Classroom This 2Learn.ca session provides teachers with an opportunity to develop their understanding and skills in creating online collaborative activities. The topics covered include using the blog and wiki for text-based collaborations, and tools like Voicethread for multimedia collaborations. Participants will explore the uses of these collaborative tools to implement them in meaningful classroom activities. 44. Twitteracy - The Basics This introduction to Twitter will provide participants with an introduction to Twitter. Basic features and overview of this social media tool will be reviewed, including hastags, retweets, and directing comments to other users on Twitter. This session is aimed at participants who have limited knowledge about Twitter and are looking to start using the tool for professional learning. 45. Twitteracy Using Twitter for Personalized Professional Development Participants will learn about ways to use Twitter as a tool for professional development and to engage students in learning activities. This session is aimed at participants who have a basic understanding of the functions of the Twitter. 46. How2 Create Your Own Point2Point VC Collaboration Would you like your students to collaborate with other schools around the world via VC, but don't know where to start? This 2Learn.ca session will give you all the tools you need to get started. Create a connected classroom. Using Technology to Include ALL Students 47. Discovering Student Voice - Using Technology to support the UDL Classroom Using student recording tools is not as scary as it sounds. In this 2Learn.ca session participants will be shown a number of freely accessible tools that they can use to easily record their students' voices in the classroom. This session is ideal for teachers who teach Second language Learners, FSL or students who have difficulty expressing themselves through written text. 48. Putting UDL Principles into Practice In this session participants will be shown how they can support the principles for Universal Design for Learning and Differentiation in an online environment. We will explore how students can be engaged, represent their learning, and share their knowledge with online resources. Come and explore the use of online resources through a new lens of UDL and Differentiation. 2Learn.ca Education Society 6

Customizing Settings to Meet Students Needs UDL Support [desktops/laptops] In this 2Learn.ca session we will explore with participants how teachers and students can personalize their computers/laptops to meet their individual needs. Participants will learn how to adjust operating systems, web browsers and Office Suite tools. See how you can meet diverse students needs using tools found in everyday, readily available technology resources. 50. Multimedia Learning Tools and Apps to Support All Students How can technology help teachers meet the diverse needs of students? This session will focus on software tools and settings that are readily available in many classrooms and schools. Participants will be shown how these everyday digital tools and websites can be used to meet the individual needs of their students 51. Putting Interactive Whiteboards in the Hands of Students In this 2Learn.ca session participants will be provided with examples how they can use the IWB to engage students in activities that put the IWB in the hands of students. Come and explore how students can use the IWB to demonstrate their thinking and understanding. Opportunities for Learning with Mobile Devices 52. Selecting and Evaluating Apps for Classroom Use Buying an App? Is it worth it? Join 2Learn.ca as we explore the world of app purchases. In this session we will explore some of the key considerations teachers should address before buying app's for classroom use. App's will be reviewed using pedagogical criteria and through the lens of 21st century teaching and learning. 53. Geo-Tools (Geocaching, Geotagging) In this session, participants will explore geocaching and geotagging tools for use with their smart phones, and learn about how geocaching can be integrated in the classroom. 54. QR codes in the Classroom In this 2Learn.ca session participants will explore a wide range of uses for QR codes, the features of QR codes, and the websites to create and read QR codes. Strategies for classroom use will be demonstrated, and participants will explore of the potential of these codes in their own settings. 55. What is it about mobile devices? In this session we will explore how the unique capabilities of mobile devices can be used in the classroom. Participants will be shown how these specific tools can be used in the collection of student work, providing feedback, sharing student learning with parents. Come and see how mobile devices can do more for you and your students. 56. Personalizing Mobile Devices to Meet Students Needs In this 2Learn.ca session we will explore how teachers and students can personalize mobile devices to meet individual student needs. Participants will review device settings and apps to see how diverse students needs can be met. 57. Images and Video with Mobile Devices The use of taking pictures and video with mobile devices is increasing exponentially; how can we, as teachers, best make use of these new technologies to enhance learning and to engage our students? In this 2Learn.ca session we will share some of the tools that can be used with these devices and strategies on how to best use them for student learning. 2Learn.ca Education Society 7

Looking for resources to help your students but can't find the right text? Why not create your own ebook? In this session participants will be provided with information on ebooks and the simple tools teachers and students can use to make their own ebooks. Information about fair dealing when using content from other sources when creating ebooks will also be shared. 60. Augmented Reality What Is It, Anyway and How Can I Use It? Utilizing downloadable device applications and web 2.0 tools, our personally owned devices and computers are able to cross reference our GPS location with visual cues to provide a digitally enhanced view of our surroundings.
