4 radiant heating introduction Radiant heating products are an alternative space heating solution to traditional wall-mounted radiators, air conditioning systems and underfloor heating. Heat is radiated downwards, warming a space s occupants and surfaces, not the air. This can be compared to the increase in temperature felt when the sun comes out from behind a cloud. Wall and floor space is freed up with the installation of ceiling mounted radiant heating panels, leading to an increase in the net usable floor area. SAS systems operate without significant air movement, leading to less air-borne particles, such as dust. Unlike air-conditioning systems, which are used to heat as well as cool, radiant heating panels have not been linked to outbreaks of diseases, such as Legionnaire s disease. A healthier option, radiant heating can also help to increase productivity by improving occupant comfort. Radiant heating systems offer value and work using small quantities of water, facilitating rapid warm-up times and low energy consumption. Panels are also easy to clean with flat surfaces featuring no moving parts, resulting in low service and maintenance requirements, and whole life costs. Electromagnetic radiation increases the temperature of objects and people rather than the temperature of the air. Radiation The heat generated by radiant heating panels gently warms occupants and objects, rather than the air itself. Integration into a suspended ceiling or suspension from a soffit means radiant heating panels do not reduce the net floor space available to the occupier. Radiant heating panels enjoy rapid heat-up times, ensuring their warming effects are felt quickly and directly by the room s occupants. Further energy efficiencies can be achieved with room zoning, resulting in only occupied areas being warmed. Approximately one seventh of the amount of water used in a traditional radiator system is used in a radiant heating system, resulting in quicker heat up times and smaller plant demands. Demands on central plants and energy, are further reduced by the lower friction levels experienced by water as it passes through the pipe-work. The surface area that water passes over as it flows through a traditional radiator system is larger, creating greater drag and requiring higher water pressures. Due to the inherent efficiencies of the system, spaces utilising radiant heating panels operate with an average room temperature of 2 C to 4 C lower than spaces using traditional convection heating methods, which saves energy without compromising thermal comfort levels. 02

5 In the manufacturing process, copper elements are bonded to the rear of a 1mm aluminium panel via aluminium pipe saddles. This process ensures maximum heat transfer between the metals and through panels. Information below relates to both Radiant Panels and Radiant Modules. Panel Ref. 6 sector demands Education Removing radiators from ground level creates valuable teaching space and reduces the risk of accidental burning. Radiant heating panels provide a high level of room comfort, are durable and robust, an ideal solution for both learning and working environments. Acoustic absorption pads can be incorporated in order to meet specific acoustic requirements e.g. Building Bulletin 93 (BB93). Healthcare Longer runs of radiant heating panels are ideal for long corridors and hospital wards. They are also suitable for recovery and public environments; particularly when specified with an Anti-Bacterial (AB) coating as this inhibits bacterial growth such as E. coli and MRSA on the coating surface. Durable, flat and smooth faced, radiant heating panels can be easily cleaned in accordance with a specified cleaning regime. Leisure Sports and leisure venues, which may only be used sporadically, can quickly and efficiently heat their premises using radiant heating. Due to a lack of moving parts, radiant heating systems require minimal maintenance and their smooth surfaces enable easy cleaning, perfect for busy leisure facilities. Transport Key considerations in the transport sector include durability, rapid warm-up times and the ability to increase efficiencies by system zoning. The lack of moving parts in radiant heating products means maintenance disruptions are kept to a minimum, which is another significant consideration in any busy transport building. Industrial In warehouses and large buildings, radiant heating panels can be used effectively to increase working temperatures in a particular area, without heating the entire space. This results in efficient heating, reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions. 04

8 radiant heating panels Ceiling mounted Radiant Heating Panels offer a space saving alternative to traditional wall or floor mounted heating systems. Radiant Heating Panels with their rapid warm up times, radiate heat downwards, warming the occupants and surfaces in a space, not the air temperature. Panels can be freely suspended or integrated into a suspended ceiling system. Radiant Heating Panels work by radiating heat downwards, heating the occupants and contents directly, rather than wasting large quantities of energy raising the air temperature of the whole occupied area. Imagine the increase in temperature felt when the sun comes out from behind a cloud. 10 radiant heating and healthcare Radiant heating is an ideal heating solution for healthcare and controlled environments. High level installation maximises the available floor and wall space and the flexibility in which space is used. Accidental injury to patients, visitors and staff is minimised, as are the chances of damaging terminal heating units. Performance Radiant heating panels provide a heat output of 521 W/m², based on a temperature differential (DT) of 55 C between the air and mean water temperatures. The output is based on tests to the new British and European test standard BS EN 14037: Ceiling mounted radiant panels supplied with water at temperature below 120 C. Infection Control Flat panels are easy to clean and reduce the cross infection risks associated with traditional wall-mounted radiator systems, helping to meet Department of Health infection control targets. Current deep-clean guidance requires the removal of radiator covers and cleaning behind radiators. This is both time consuming and costly. An anti-bacterial paint finish inhibiting the growth of microorganisms is available, providing additional assistance in meeting infection control targets. Air Movement The use of radiant heating reduces air and dust movement and the risk of air-borne diseases, such as legionella. This leads to increased hygiene levels. Maintenance Radiant heating panels do not contain moving parts e.g. motorised fans, resulting in minimal maintenance requirements, system downtime and operational costs. Whole Life Cycle Costs The combination of reduced energy consumption and maintenance requirements, with competitive initial capital costs, leads to a heating system with one of the lowest whole life cycle costs Healthcare Wards Radiant heating panels are used extensively in wards to provide patients with a comfortable thermal environment. Panels operate with low noise levels, contributing to a comfortable acoustic environment. Panels are available in a range of sizes to meet specific requirements and can be integrated within a suspended ceiling or independently surface mounted. In order to minimise heat losses, panels are typically located above windows, around exterior walls and in bathroom areas. Mental Health Units Anti-ligature panels are available for secure locations such as mental health units. Such panels are designed to reduce selfharm opportunities. SAS Dutch-fold anti-ligature panels have been recognised by the Construction Products Association for the innovation in the design and manufacture of its radiant heating panels. SAS design was recognised in the health, safety and security section of the CPA s annual Construction Products Innovation and Achievement title. Two anti-ligature options exist: surface-mounted and gravitybatten. The choice of panel will depend on the security risk: low, medium or high. Further information is available from the technical department. Controlled Environments Radiant heating panels are often specified for laboratories and clean rooms because they are easy to keep clean. As the heat transfer mode is predominantly radiant, there are fewer draughts reducing unwanted air movement in the space. This keeps air and dust movement to a minimum, an important consideration where specific air movement regimes are required for infection control and comfort conditions. Corridors The benefits of radiant heating are still felt in environments with a high air change rate. Panels are often found in corridors and reception areas. Radiant heating panels are also effective in combating cold down drafts, a characteristic often associated with full and half height glazing in highly glazed areas. 08

12 anti-ligature radiant panels Ligature is a material that is used for tying an object to another. Ligature can be made from a range of materials such as rope or wire. An anti-ligature product is designed to prevent the attachment of ligature to the product. Anti-ligature products are often used to prevent people from causing self-harm by attaching ligature to products. System Description Radiant heated panels featuring a flanged fold are used as an anti-ligature measure in secure facilities. The panels are flush mounted and secured from below ensuring a tamper-proof fixing and are suitable for low to medium security facilities. Surface mounted anti-ligature radiant heating panels are secured via gravity battens to the ceiling. Anti-pick sealant ensures a tamper-proof seal, which is suitable for high security facilities. 15 radiant modules and rafts 13

16 radiant modules and rafts Modules Radiant Modules consist of a number of radiant heating panels, which are linked together in modules to form longer runs. Importantly, they share a single set of flow-and return pipework connections. The number of panels that can be joined together is dependent on design considerations. The greater the number of connections, the greater the temperature decay and pressure required to pump the water around the system. Radiant Modules can be freely suspended or surface mounted and are ideal where longer runs or continuous lengths of radiant heating panels are required (e.g. hospital wards, industrial settings and corridors). The exact choice of RM will be a result of the building design, the heat output required, the area concerned and the location of the primary pipework. Radiant Module elements are formed from a series of copper pipes, which are bonded via aluminium pipe saddles to the rear of the aluminium panels and to each other with copper couplings. This process ensures maximum thermal transfer between the metals. Radiant Modules are available in a range of lengths and are made from two or three panels joined together to span the required length (e.g. a 6000mm module would be made from two 2400mm panels and one 1200mm panel, while a 4200mm metre module would consist of one 2400mm panel and one 1800mm panel). This means long Radiant Module designs can be achieved without additional pipework, valves etc. Rafts Radiant Rafts consist of Radiant Panels and are suspended from a flat structural soffit. Radiant Service Rafts incorporate a radiant heat emitter, with luminaires, acoustic treatment and other building services, such as PIR sensors. They are ideal for naturally ventilated spaces, such as educational buildings. High level installation frees up floor and wall space, creating valuable teaching space and reducing the risks of accidental burning. High level installation and robust construction materials ensure product durability in demanding environments. Radiant Rafts help met the acoustic requirement of Building Bulletin 93 (BB93) published in 2003 by the DfES and are used to control reverberation in classrooms, corridors and stairwells. In addition Radiant Heating systems can help meet the guidelines for the environmental design of school buildings set out in Building Bulletin 87 (BB87), The standard colour for Rafts and Modules is RAL 9010, but a wide range of RAL colours are available to specify. Radiant Modules and Rafts offer flat smooth faced radiant heating surfaces, with an optional anti-bacterial coating. AB is a polyester powder anti-bacterial paint, which is both durable and inhibits the growth of bacteria such as MRSA and E. coli on the coating surface (e.g. in healthcare and catering environments). 14
