This is the first of our monthly newsletters to help keep you informed of the many exciting activities and events that we will be participating in this year. Cooke Point Playgroup (CPPG) has a long history in playing a vital role in our community through providing a fun, supportive and educative service for our 0 to 5 year olds as well as building strong relationships with each other as parents and caregivers. 2 New Committee for 2013 Exciting new times are on the horizon On April 17, CPPG held its annual AGM with a wonderful turnout and representation from all groups. A new committee was elected who are energetic and enthusiastic about the year ahead. The 2013 committee would like to thank Shelley Wallace, Jodie Lennox, Alison Twinning and Jayde Hooper for their fabulous efforts running playgroup and wish them all the best for the future. The next committee meeting will be Monday 13 th May at the Rec Club, Port Hedland, starting at All playgroup members are welcome to attend! New Memberships CPPG currently runs 6 playgroup sessions catering for children of different ages and ability levels. Attached with this is a flyer that explains when each group runs and what age group it is aimed at. At the present time, our membership level has fallen which is concerning. We need to boost our membership level to cover costs and running expenses of playgroup. There is no better advertising than word of mouth so we asking you, our members, to please encourage people to come along and join playgroup. New people are always arriving in town and we will be holding a stall at the Welcome to Hedland Night to hand out information. Enrollment forms can be found in the folder in the kitchen as well as how to pay fees. Feel free to hand out the flyer amongst the community to help build our awesome playgroup. 2

3 Fundraising and Events for Play Group! So many exciting activities and events are occurring this month. See what you can do for your playgroup? There are a few fundraising activities that are up and running. Every cent raised for playgroup ensures we can run adequate, well resourced activities for our children as well as keep costs down for members. Earn and Learn at Woolworths Don t forget to collect your Earn and Learn stickers from Woolworths and put them in the box on the kitchen bench at playgroup. This helps playgroup to buy new equipment and supplies. Sticker stalking at Woolies has now become one of my past times. Last year we collected 2240 points, which I m positive that we can beat that record. $50 Boards Every group has now received a $50 board to sell with a second to complete when the first board is finished. This activity is simply trying to guess the last 2 numbers of a $50 note and buying the corresponding square of that number. Please make sure after you have tried your best selling as many squares as you can that you ring the next person on the list so you can pass it on. This fundraiser is great for the Dads to take to work. For a little combined effort, this fundraiser earns playgroup $600. Cadbury Fundraising I will be visiting each session this week with Cadbury Chocolate boxes to sell. Each box contains 50 chocolates to sell at $1 each. You will have approx. 2 weeks to sell your chocolates and return the money. Payment upfront is very welcome. Your session coordinator will issue you a receipt on payment. This is also an easy fundraiser that our Dads can participate in. At this stage we have a total of 51 boxes to sell which will earn us a net profit of $750. Cool Drinks The cool drinks and water are located in the bottom of the fridge for $2 each. If there is a variety that you would really like in the fridge, please leave me a note on the little white board on the fridge or leave me a note in the communication book. The money tin for the cool drinks is also in the fridge. The committee is also looking at applying for grants to help boost the income of playgroup. If anyone wants to be part of this process or has some awesome fundraising ideas, please come to the next committee meeting on Monday 13 th May at 7.30pm at the Rec Club, Port Hedland or contact someone on the committee. Many hands make light work. 3

4 Continued We are participating in a couple of events this month. Traditionally this time of year can get busy with the cooler weather, which makes each event more enjoyable. Welcome to Hedland Night This is an annual event for the Hedland community to come together and celebrate everything Hedland on Friday 17 th March from 5 to 9pm. CPPG are holding a stall to provide information about our playgroup to new and existing members of the community. We will be making 300 show bags, which each group has been busy decorating, with lots of quality information for parents, flyers, enrollment forms and some freebies. We are looking for people to help out on the stall. There is a list on the noticeboard at playgroup, please allocate yourself to a time slot. This event is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our awesome playgroup and hopefully boost membership. Child Safety Forums Keeping Kids Injury Free in the Pilbara We are very lucky to be hosting free Child Safety Forums for parents presented by Kidsafe WA and The Royal Lifesaving Society WA at play Group. There are two sessions Tuesday 14 th May, pm Wednesday 15 th May, am. Children are welcome to attend the Wednesday session. There is a registration list at playgroup on the notice board or contact Leila Edwards. This type of opportunity for parents does not come around every year so it is important that you attend. Light refreshments provided. Busy Bee You may have already noticed some small changes to the playgroup building but there is more to come. We need you to help out with a Busy Bee Saturday 18 th May from 2pm. We will be attacking the toy shed, kitchen, cupboards and craft area. Our aim is to make our playgroup easy for everyone to use that is clean, organised, sorted and labeled. So bring along your gloves, elbow grease, your partner and a sense of achievement. Hopefully a few Dads will be able to give a hand with some new ideas for the storage shed. Light refreshments will be provided. Remember that many hands make light work that will benefit everyone at playgroup. Committee Meeting The next Committee Meeting will be Monday 13 th May at 7.30pm at the Cooke Point Rec Club on Keesing Street at Everyone is welcome to attend. We are looking for people who would be interested in participating in sub committees; looking at craft programming, grant submissions and fundraising ideas. If you think this would interest you, please come along. Communication at Playgroup Communication is the vital key to our success at playgroup. There are a number of ways to keep up to date with information. Facebook: If you haven t already done so, check out our Facebook page and catch up on the latest events. Feel free to post photos or news of what s happening in your group. The communication book allows groups to leave messages to each other. The info folder contains the enrollment forms, fees, contact details and general information about playgroup. Please feel free to check out both Phone Number: We have a new phone and number Notice Boards: Make sure you check out the boards located in the playgroup room for up to date information. One board is for playgroup news and events and the other is for community information. We are looking to create a web page for playgroup. Anyone with experience in doing this, please make yourself known, we d love to hear from you! 4

5 More Exciting News! Become a sticker stalker and ask everyone in the line for their tickets. Pre Kindy The Pre Kindy Program will be up and running again for Term 2 and those enrolled in the program have been contacted. The program will be run and coordinated for the rest of the year by Debbie Bull (qualified Department of Education Teacher) with the assistance of Suellen Paine. Session will resume this Thursday 9 th May at 8.45am. The class is currently full with a wait list. If you know of someone wishing to enroll, please contact the pre kindy address for further information. West End Markets We have had fabulous feedback from people who received free play dough at the markets. Thank you to everyone who made and donated play dough for this event. As you can see the kids loved it with Olivia Luxton making a yellow play dough lemon for her drink. We will be participating at the next markets and are looking to be bigger and better. If you would like to be part of the fundraising sub committee, please feel free to contact the committee. Craft Program This week we will be very busy making Mothers Day Craft. Children will be decorating a mug, making a dough plaque (see left) and decorating Mothers Day Cards. For the next four weeks we will be covering People in the Community and specifically looking at Police, Fire Service and Medical/Ambulance. This is to coincide with the Andrew McLaughlin Centre Open day in June. We will finish the program with outdoor pretend play with boxcars. There is a craft folder in the kitchen that has the monthly program and craft activities. Anyone who would like to participate in the development of craft programs for our children and would like to be part of a sub committee, please come along to the next committee meeting or speak to someone on the current committee. 5
