2 ELECTRICAL ELECTRONIC TESTING AND DIAGNOSTICS Course Aim: To provide the mechanic / technician with the ability to service, test and fit automotive electrical electronic systems from circuit diagrams, as per instructions and in accordance with procedures, in a safe and aware manner. Course Objectives: The delegate will be able to: Test and diagnose electrical electronic faults using a multimeter Test and diagnose electrical electronic faults using an oscilloscope trace and repair auto-electrical circuits on an automobile from circuit diagrams test and diagnose faults for sensors and actuators test and diagnose faults for CAN BUS systems Course duration: 5 Days Course Pre-requisites: Basic electrical electronic knowledge Cost: 750 per candidate

3 COURSE CRITERIA 1. Read, discuss and interpret automobile electric circuit diagrams and symbols. Auto electrical circuits include: electric window, central locking, electric windows, relay control radiator fan, instrumentation warning, alarm, immobilzer, rear window demister, fog/spot lights (front/rear), manual sunroof, antenna control, audio device and speaker. 2. Select and use test equipment to locate faults on auto electric circuits following prescribed fault finding techniques using manuals and circuit diagrams. Test equipment includes: test probe, continuity tester, multi-meter and oscilloscope. Possible faults include: earth (ground), open circuit, short circuit, high resistance joints, loose connection. 3. Remove faulty and refit new auto electrical components from/to an automobile 4. Complete fault reports 5. Discuss and explain the function of stability, traction and drive control related components. ABS components include: wheel speed sensors, ECU, hydraulic pressure modulator with solenoid valves, hydraulic pressure modulator with integrated ECU. ABS/TSC components include: ABS/TSC ECU, Motronic ECU, electronic throttle control ECU, ABS hydraulic pressure modulator, wheel sensors. ETC components include: transmission output shaft speed sensor, engine load/speed selector lever, kick down switch, hydraulic actuators, ECU. EPC components include: YAW sensor, lateral acceleration sensor, steering wheel angle sensor, primary pressure sensor, wheel speed sensors, ESP ECU, hydraulic modulator, engine management ECU, ignition angle, fuel injectors, throttle valve for ETC. 6. Diagnose and repair vehicle stability, traction and drive control related components. Use appropriate measuring equipment Use diagnostic procedures Perform visual checks Use manufacturer specific manuals Test equipment includes: digital code checker, multi meter, test lamps oscilloscope, product specific diagnostic test equipment. Diagnosing includes: analysing/interpretation of diagnosing codes on the ECU and the clearing thereof. 7. Discuss and explain data transmission between systems. Transmission media include: conventional data transmission, serial data transmission (CAN), ECU networking, closed-loop control system and controlled variables. 8. Discuss and report incidents and problems related to CAN BUS systems and complete fault finding reports.
