FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY Defining Story With An Image

FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY BRIEF INTRODUCTION The wonderful aspect of fine art photography is that it is up to the photographer whether it is considered as fine art or not.! Also known as photographic art or artistic photography the term has no defined meaning: it is left to the creative vision of the photographer.! The basic idea behind the genre is that instead of merely capturing a realistic rendition of the subject, the photographer is aiming to produce a more personal, evocative or atmospheric impression using photographic media as a tool.

DRAGGING THE SHUTTER Dragging the shutter is a technique using a slow shutter speed in conjunction with camera movement to achieve an in camera effect. Best used with ambient light but can also be utilised with mixing both flash and ambient light.

CAMERA SETTINGS Camera settings are crucial to this technique being effective outdoors. The ideal shutter speed is effective from 1/10 second to 1 second or longer. To get useable images outdoors during the day, the camera settings like ISO and aperture will have to be set to the camera s limit in order to obtain the correct exposure.

CAMERA SETTINGS 1. Start in Manual mode 2. Set the shutter from 1/10 sec to 1 sec 3. Adjust you ISO to the lowest setting (ie 100 ISO). 4. Adjust your aperture down to reach the correct exposure 5. If still over exposing, place ND filter or Polariser to reduce the exposure even further depending on how much light in the scene.

PANNING TECHNIQUES Once the exposure is correct the next step is to adopt different panning techniques. Horizontal Panning Vertical Tilting Direction of the pan and tilt motion Continue with a fluid motion before and after the shutter button has been pressed. Try deliberate camera shake as well

FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS ON IMPROVING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY Photograph what interests you which will help you remain passionate about learning more. Expanding your knowledge of composition will help you be a better photographer Instantly! Composition is that one process that will get your developing style to the next level Personal projects keep that passion alive Photograph with the curiosity of a child

ELEMENTS OF COMPOSITION!!! Line Shape Tone Texture Thirds Pattern Balance Contrast Symmetry Asymmetry Harmony Movement Rhythm Colour Perspective Space Depth Focus

LINES ARE SIMPLE LEADERS IN ANY COMPOSITION Line can be powerful elements in an image. They have the ability to draw the eye to key focal points and to impact the feel of an image greatly. Horizontal Line - The ability to ground an image. Vertical Line - Can be dynamic and powerful. Diagonal Line - Sense of motion and movement. Converging Line - Forms a depth in an image.

RHYTHM - THE FLOW OF AN IMAGE Just as the name suggests, rhythm is the beat or flow of an image. It is the process of allowing or guiding the eye to move around the image to explore and/or rest. You can also use rhythm to disrupt the flow, creating tension or even to emphasise a story in the image.

PATTERN Pattern means the repetition of an element in a photograph and could be anything natural or manmade. Interesting patterns occur when strong graphic elements like colour, tone, shape, form or line repeat themselves. Among the many different elements that make patterns the most powerful patterns are made by shapes. When using the dragging the shutter technique, totally new patterns can be created and formed.

COLOUR - CREATING MOOD THROUGH TONE The colour in an image and how they are presented can make or break a composition. Bright colours can add vibrancy, energy and distinct interest. Pale or pastel colours can give a feeling of calm and serenity. The wrong use of colour can distract the viewer away from key focal points. Colour can also greatly influence the mood. Blue and greens can have a calming, soothing effect. Reds and yellows can convey vibrancy and energy within the composition.
