OCR SPECIFICATION - GCSE English Literature exam English Literature CA English Language exam English Language CA Three exams, 25% each: Modern Drama (An Inspector Calls) Novel (Of Mice and Men) Literary Heritage Prose and Poetry (Lord of the Flies and Duffy) 75% Two essays: Shakespeare (Macbeth), including filmed versions Poetry comparison (Wilfred Owen) 25% One exam paper, Information and Ideas : Section A, Reading Section B, Writing 40% Three essays: Imaginative writing Extended Literary Heritage Spoken Language 3 x speaking and listening tasks 60%

CA Tasks OCR set the tasks and these are changed each year. OCR do not release the titles until late in the Summer Term. All titles and dates can be found in your son or daughter s GCSE English handbook.

English Literature CA Shakespeare (Macbeth), including filmed versions: Remind yourself of Act 2 scene 1 in the text and in one or more performed versions of the play. Explore the ways in which Banquo is presented in this scene and elsewhere in Shakespeare s play, and in the performed version(s). Poetry comparison (Wilfred Owen). Anthem for Doomed Youth and The Send Off Compare the ways in which Owen conveys powerful feelings about war in these two poems.

English Language CA Imaginative Writing: Write a story with the title The Victims. AND Either (a) Write a newspaper obituary for one of the characters in your story. Or (b) Write a Wikipedia-style article about the incidents described in your story and their aftermath. Or (c) Write the words of an interview in which you answer questions on the composition and creative process of your story. Extended Literary Heritage: Of Mice and Men How does Steinbeck show the power of dreams and dreaming in the novel?

English Language CA continued Spoken Language study: A study of a particular interviewer: Graham Norton Speaking & :Listening: Various tasks completed throughout the year in groups, both discussion and drama. Individual presentation to class about Work Experience.

Preparation Students are taught the text and may complete short written activities in class or at home. A draft is then written by the student and submitted to their teacher. Teachers are not allowed to provide detailed feedback on these drafts but we can give some advice. Students then make notes from their draft.

Controlled Assessment We are a high control subject. Candidates will be able to take notes and their own plans into controlled assessment sessions. However no drafts or partly written drafts can be taken in. Dictionaries are allowed on some tasks only. Different tasks have different time allowances. A suggested word count is given.

Assessment Controlled Assessment is initially assessed by the student s English teacher. We complete internal standardisation and moderation to ensure consistency. Students are told their marks on the understanding that they are provisional and subject to moderation. There is no indication of grade given; the exam board will set grade boundaries after all the marks have been submitted. Much like with examinations!

Moderation Each year, OCR will request a range of folders of work. This happens after we have submitted the marks. It is their choice whose folders are sent for moderation. Last year was our first year with OCR and all of our marks were agreed.

Feedback from moderation All candidates engaged with the texts and exhibited a grasp of the historical and social context. Excellent examples of comprehensive analysis. [tasks] allowed students the scope to develop their own ideas. It was pleasing to see a range of connections in the Poetry essays and quotations being used to good effect. The responses show a high level of control.

Thank you for listening! The answers you get from literature depend on the questions you pose. (Margaret Atwood)
