1 Medina Public 3 rd Annual NASP Tournament Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Medina Public School Tournament begins at 9:00 am What is the Medina Public School NASP Tournament all about? A NASP tournament is a practical demonstration of the archery skills your students have learned in the classroom. Unlike other school sports, all students regardless of their physical or academic ability, gender, or social status have a chance to compete and even make the team. Students and coaches will be very familiar and comfortable with the tournament because the range rules, equipment and shooting techniques are identical to the NASP classroom lessons. Why should your school participate in Medina s NASP Tournament? Participation in a tournament gives your students an opportunity to interact with and compete against other students from the area. For many students, this might be their only opportunity to experience what other athletes feel when they sink a game winning 3 point shot, score a touchdown, or block a spike. Who can participate? The Medina NASP tournament is open only to archers enrolled at schools offering the NASP unit as part of their physical education curriculum during school hours at least once per school year. How do I register? What are the fees? Whether registering 1 archer for the individual category or an entire team, fill out the enclosed registration form and return it with the fee as soon as possible. The fee for this tournament is $2 per archer. This fee is non-refundable and will not be returned if archers cancel or do not attend the tournament. There is limited space for 150 archers available at this tournament. Registrations will be taken on a first come-first served basis. Please return your registration form and fee no later than March 14. Late entries or changes will not be accepted after the deadline. You will receive an confirming your assigned flight time/s prior to the tournament date. Please send registration forms and fees to: Damon Bosche Medina Public School P.O. Box 547 Make checks payable to Medina Public School. Medina, ND or FAX forms to Registration forms may also be filled out electronically and ed to: Thank you for your interest in our tournament, and we hope to see you on March 29 th. 2 2014 Medina NASP Tournament Rules Rules and guidelines for the Medina Public School tournament are very similar to those of the State and National tournament. The equipment, range set up, range commands and procedures will all be very familiar to you and your archers as they are exactly the same as in the classroom and can be found your NASP Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) handbook. Team sizes, shooting distances, and scoring are different for the Medina Public School Tournament. Changes to these rules are in red. Please take note of the changes in these rules. Grade Level Divisions Tournament teams must be comprised of students separated by grade divisions as follows: Elementary (4-5), Middle (6-8), and High School (9-12). Schools that support grades in multiple divisions may register teams in more than one division. A student may shoot up a grade level but not down and cannot compete in two grade divisions. In other words, a 7 th grader could be on the high school team but not compete for the middle school team, nor can a high school student compete on the middle school team. Team Size Team size per grade level division must be between students with at least 4 of the team members being of the opposite gender. Determining Teams In many cases there are far more students in a school s NASP classes than can be on the NASP Archery Team. In these cases teachers may choose to hold in school trials to help narrow down who will represent the school at the tournament. Finally, a shoot-off or in school tournament may be conducted to determine the students to be on the team. These school shoot-offs allow many more students to be part of the tournament process even though they don t all make the final team. However, remember even those students that don t make the team may enter the tournament in the individual category. When determining your team, remember only the top 7 scores for each team count for the total, so consider reserving a few positions on the team for students who aren t the top scorers but whose attitude, enthusiasm and presence are motivational to the team. Special accommodations are made as practically possible for students with vision, motor, and mental challenges. If you have a student that needs special accommodations, please contact the tournament coordinator prior to the tournament so arrangements can be made. Archery Equipment Only the following approved equipment will be allowed at the Medina NASP Tournament. Bow: Genesis Compound Bow 10-20lbs adjustable No modifications of any kind (markings, sights, stabilizers etc.) may be added to the bow) Tie on nock locator -Brass nock locators must be removed and replaced. Factory plastic nock locators will be permitted but we recommend replacing them. 2

3 Arrow: Easton 1820 Aluminum Arrow Full length (30 inches) with plastic vanes Certain modifications are permissible under NASP tournament rules i.e. custom bow strings, paint, arrow cresting etc. If you have made any modifications to your equipment please carefully review the official NASP national tournament rules for details. If you have made any alterations to your equipment, please report to the equipment check out area for inspection prior to the start of your assigned flight. All equipment will be inspected by a tournament official once you enter the shooting area, however at that point there will be very little time to make changes if needed or get a replacement. Loaner bows will be available only in the case of equipment malfunction. Each school/archer is responsible for bringing their own bow. Arrows will be provided at the tournament and will be located at the shooting line. Tournament officials will replace arrows that are bent, dinged, damage to the point or nock and major damage to the vanes if they determine they pose a safety hazard. Arrows will not be replaced at the request of the archer due to minor aesthetic damage. Please write your school s name or archer s name on all equipment, as there will be a lot of similar equipment present. Lane Width/Assignment: The number of teams and archers that register for the tournament will affect how the tournament is run. Lanes may be assigned when you check in or you may be allowed to select an area on your own. Depending on the number of shooters assigned to your flight you will likely be sharing a shooting lane with another archer. Every attempt will be made to keep teams in the same general area, but also to pair archers from opposing schools in the same lane. This is done so archers from opposing schools are scoring each other s cards. Each lane is 5 feet wide and accommodates two shooters on the shooting line at a time (2.5 ft/shooter). If your school is registering multiple teams that will be sharing equipment, contact the tournament coordinator so flight assignments can be made accordingly. Shooting and Shooting Distance Each team member will shoot three ends of five arrows from 9 meters and 12 meters for a total of 30 arrows. The maximum score an individual archer can achieve is 300 points. The maximum score a team can achieve is 2100 points. In addition, all archers are given 1 practice end (5 arrows non-scoring) at each distance immediately prior to the start of the scoring ends. Time Archers are allowed 2 minutes to shoot an end of 5 arrows, the same time limit is imposed for the practice end as well as bounce outs. At NASP tournaments, archers return to the waiting line immediately after making the final shot for each end. 3

4 Scoring While all of the team members shoot on tournament day, only the top 7 individual scores, including at least 4 final scores of the opposite gender, are summed for the overall team score. All archers shooting as part of a team are automatically scored in the individual category. All shooting will be done on an 80cm FITA approved target face. The center ring value is 10 points, the next ring 9, the next ring 8 and so on. If an arrow touches the outline of the higher scoring ring, that arrow shall be awarded the higher value. If there is a discrepancy between archers that cannot be resolved by the archers, that arrow s value will be ruled by a lane judge. This ruling is final. As in the classroom, only one archer at the target at a time. The recorder should remain behind the target line and will be marking his or her fellow archer s scores. Archers may only pull or even touch arrows in the target when all arrows have been scored. It is very easy to cause arrows that are very near the scoring rings to be scored higher. All cards must be submitted immediately after the flight concludes for scoring. Once submitted all scores are FINAL. Scorecards Each archer will be provided a scorecard. The cards will then be placed behind the target where it will remain until the end of the flight. Students should work in pairs to help each other determine each arrows score, with the archer scoring the other archers arrows. After scoring the final end, the scorecard needs to be signed by both the archer and a witness (fellow archer) and turned in to a range official at the end of the flight. Coaches should gather cards from his or her archers, be sure all cards are there, all bubbles are filled in, errant marks are erased, the name and shooter number is on the card and they have been signed. Conclusion of the flight After the command is given to get arrows from the final end of arrows, archers should progress to the target line. Upon finishing your score cards and pulling arrows, the archers will have a few more tasks: 1. Return tournament arrows to quivers and proceed to the waiting line. 2. Range will be declared closed and a verbal command will be given allowing archers and coaches to travel onto the range to: a. Move quivers back to the 9 meter shooting line b. Return to the target area to pick up score cards and replace paper target faces with fresh faces (if necessary) 4

5 Miscellaneous Tournament Rules & Procedures Bounce outs Arrows that hit the target but bounce back or fall out of the target are referred to as a bounce out. This most commonly happens in the elementary division. Elementary teams and individuals will be shooting in designated lanes, as those targets will be modified to prevent bounce outs. In the event of a bounce out, that arrow will not be counted. Archers should finish their end of arrows and return to the waiting line. After the standard 2 minute shooting time has elapsed, archers with bounce out s will be given an opportunity to re-shoot that arrow (or arrows), prior to scoring. Dropped Arrows If an arrow is dropped at the shooting line it should be handled the same as within class. Instruct your archers to finish their end, remain at the line, raise their hand and a lane supervisor will put new arrow in the floor quiver. The lane supervisor may anticipate this and bring the replacement right away. Replacements must be shot within the original two minute time period. The dropped arrow should remain on the floor until the three-whistle command is given to go get arrows and should be picked up by the lane supervisor. DO NOT for any reason attempt to pick up a dropped arrow during live fire. If the arrow is interfering with the archers stance, the archer should stop raise their hand and notify a tournament official. Ties At the end of the tournament, any individual ties occurring in the top 3 of any grade category will compete in a sudden death shoot-off. Observer seating, Admission Prices & Concessions A designated seating area will be provided for spectators. Only individuals and coaches that are assigned to that flight may be in the shooting area. Teams that have already shot or are waiting for their flight must remain in the observer area or other common areas. Admission prices for adults is $2, and the price for students is $1. Ages 5 and under are free. Concessions will be served throughout the day. Apparel If its approved for wear at school, its ok at the tournament. Electronics Electronics such as music devices, cell phones and cameras may not be used by archers in a flight. This includes behind the waiting line. Safety is the utmost priority here and we want to be sure we have the archers undivided attention. Please instruct your archers to TURN OFF and stow all electronic devices upon entering the shooting area. Electronic devices WILL BE CONFICSATED if seen or heard by tournament officials and given to the coach for safe keeping until the flight has concluded. Awards Individual medals will be presented to the top 3 male and female archers within each age division. Team trophies will be presented to the first place team in each division. Participation ribbons will be awarded to all participants. 5
