1 Whitchurch Discovery Remembrance Day Remembrance day is when everyone remembers the soldiers who fought for us in the wars. Some people go to a church service where holly wreaths are placed around a memorial. This year is the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the first world war. This year to celebrate remembrance day ceramic poppies have been laid in the moat of The Tower of London. Each poppy represents a person from Britain or the colonies who died in the World War I. The last poppy was placed by 13 year old cadet Harry. To celebrate remembrance day this year in our school we each had a poppy (kindly made by year 6) that we held up, to form the shape of a poppy. Year 6 also performed poems they had written about the war. Abby Y5

2 Children in Need Day! On Friday 14th November we were asked to bring in 1 for Children in Need. The children were also allowed to dress up as their hero. Their hero could be anything even their mum or dad! Morgan in year 5 said her favorite bit was dressing up. Jenny in year 5 did a sponsored silence and raised about 95 for children in need. Here are some of our favourite pictures: The houses of Parliament A few weeks ago the Year 6 s went to the Houses of Parliament. I interviewed Verity Lemon, Yr 6, about what the Houses of Parliament are really about. Amelia: What did you see? Verity: We saw the River Thames, Big Ben tower and we sat in the room of John Berko. Who did you speak to? We spoke to a man who wore a medal made out of gold, silver and bronze. Which part did they go to? We didn t go to all of the Houses of Parliament s rooms but we went near Big Ben. Amelia P Y5

3 Robot Lands On Rocket On Wednesday the 12th of November a robot probe landed on a comet traveling at 80,000 miles per hour. After a ten year journey through the solar system. The European space agency have gone where no other spacecraft has gone before. We have interviewed Mr. Smith, who was part of the team behind the probe, to find out more. Mr. Smith told us that he began working on the probe 16 years ago and the robot itself took 5 years. The robot started being built in They decided to build the robot to investigate comets which are ancient remnants of the solar system and can tell us a lot about its formation. The probe will stay on the comet forever and his job is propulsion design and test engineer. Mr. Smith became involved in building the robot because he designed and built the propulsion system. He needed lots of qualifications to become a rocket scientist that included engineering, physics, chemistry, math and lots more! Mr. Smith says he never stops training as there is always something new to learn. By Catrin Y4 and Abby Y5 Brand new Frog species found! A brand new type of leopard frog species was discovered in New York. The frogs were discovered living on Staten Island, a grassy wetland area right next to the city of New York. After listening to a sound clip of the frog, Amelia said, It s call is unusual, and I think it doesn t sound very nice. By Verity Y6

4 Tiger on the loose in Paris A tiger has gone missing in Paris. French police say that they think the tiger could be on the loose near Disneyland the hunt started when there was reports of the animal being seen in a supermarket car park. A trained wolf hunter and other animal experts are looking for the tiger. People in the area have been told to not travel on foot while the tiger is still loose. It is not known where the animal escaped from but the Disney land theme park say it does not have any tigers. By Ceri M Y5 and Amber F Y4. School that stops bullying There is a ban in a School in Denmark on having just one best friend. The children are encouraged to make as many friends as possible as a way to make sure bullying never happens. There are also other strict rules like having to invite your whole class to your birthday party and you have to invite at least three friends to your house at one time. I interviewed people to see if they would like to go to the school. Ella in year 5 said she didn t want to go to the school because it is strict and you should choose who your friends are. Also it is expensive to invite a whole class to a party. By Ceri M year 5 Worlds biggest human Christmas tree A total of 2,945 people dressed up in different colors. They all gathered together in Honduras to make the shape of a Christmas tree. They beat the previous record by 1,000 people. The Christmas tree they ended up with looked great. By Ceri Y5

5 Families in Dagenham, London have turned their row of homes into a Disney Frozen scene for Christmas. The display took 28 days to complete. It uses 15,000 Frozen Wonderland lights. They are hoping to raise money for a children s burn charity. The display looks fabulous. Ceri Y5 Anti Bullying week During the week beginning the 17th November the school held its annual anti bullying week. For this week, a number of lessons are devoted to teaching children strategies for coping with friendship falling outs and identifying bullying. We discussed types of bullying and signed a pledge to be a non bullying school. We shared some of our work in an assembly and we all made hand prints with positive messages to show how we will work together. We also designed an anti-bullying superhero.
