Some history of science in Berlin Leibniz s Academy 1710 The Kurfürstliche Brandenburgische Sozietät der Wissenschaften is founded upon the advice of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz ( ) Prussian academy of sciences. Many heros of modern science where members of this academy. From 1933 to 1945 disastrous history.. in 1946 German academy of sciencs in Berlin, 1972 Academy of sciences in the GDR. Refounded in 1992 as Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). April 2014 Berlin and Adlershof, Prof. Dr. Ingolf Hertel 3
Some history of science in Berlin Magnus House The Magnus-Haus in the centre of Berlin (across the Pergamon Museum) and next to.. has been built under Fredreric II It is closely linked to physics in Germany: In the 18. century J. L. Lagrange, lived and worked there (founder of analytical mechanics) the house was bought by Gustav Magnus. He established a private laboratory there which he allocated to the university. It is considered the oldes physics lab in Germany The participants of the Physics Colloquium which Magnus established, founded in 1845 the German Physical Society (DPG). Among them where Werner von Siemens and Georg Halske, who laid 1847 here the foundations of today s worldwide SIEMENS enterprise. By the way: around 1900, electrical industry was one of the key industries in Berlin.. the city of light Emil Rathenau und Thomas Edison (AEG). 5 Some science history continued: Hermann v. Helmholtz one of the real giants: studied medicine, physiology Broad range of achievements. Ophtalmic optics, Acoustics, Energy, Electromagnetism,. Since 1871 professor of physics at the Berlin university, build 1876 the first major Physics Laboratory of a university. Founded the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) etc. Some of his famous students: Albert Abraham Michelson, Wilhelm Wien, William James, Heinrich Hertz, Michael I. 40 Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing Certified Reference Materials for EURO Coins Adlershof. Science at Work EURO coins exist in 96 different shapes and in various compositions. The automatic recognition of EURO coins requires the strict compliance of the alloys composition with the specification. Faked coins and coins from other origin can be detected by their composition. Along its guiding line Safety and Reliability in Chemical and Materials Technologies BAM, the Federal German Institute for Materials Research and Testing, in cooperation with Chemikerausschuss der Gesellschaft für Bergbau, Metallurgie, Rohstoff- und Umwelttechnik (GDMB), Arbeitsausschuss Kupfer develops certified reference materials for the alloys of the EURO coins. There are three alloys of the base composition CuNi25, CuZn20Ni5 und CuAl5Zn5Sn (Nordic Gold).

Adlershof. Science at Work Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus; Working Group Atmospheric Chemistry 20 years Station at Mt. Brocken/Harz We decided to continue our cloud chemical measurements at Mt. Brocken (Harz Mountains), started These measurements are world-wide singular concerning the long-term programme as well the quantity and quality of data. In 2008 the station has been fully renovated. The Mt. Brocken station provides important information also for describing the climate change. Clouds are an essential medium for the transport and transformation of trace substances; all what is deposited by precipitation is caused by cloud chemical processes. Changing air quality also influences physical parameters of clouds, such as structure and abundance. Clouds play an important role in climate; however, current models describe them still invalid. Therefore, a better understanding of physics and chemistry of clouds is not only needed for forecasting the climate change but also for a better description of the long-range transport of air pollutants. 44 Adlershof. Science at Work OH! the Hydroxyl Understanding the fundamentals of water Ions migrate in aquous solutions with very different velocities. H + -ions are in fact tenfold faster than normal ions like Chloride or Fluoride, due to the charge hopping though the network fo water molecules via hydrogen bonding. Whether OH - -ions could do the same, was debated for many years: A new method combines a liquid microjet and VUV-spectroscopy at BESSY II. By hydrogen bonding, hydroxyl ions are part of the molecular network in water and hence can pass their charge from molecule to molecule. Chloride or Fluoride ions are not able to do so! The exitation energy of the OH - -ions can be transferred to neighbouring water molecules. Copyright: nature.com NATURE Vol (2008)
Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences ISAS e. V. Bestseller from ISAS Adlershof. Science at Work Scientists of the ISAS - Institute for Analytical Sciences have in cooperation with Analytik Jena developed a spectrometer, that needs only one light source and nevertheless is able to analyse multiple elements at the same time. contraa 700 measures with highest resolution, enables high sample throughput and is easy to operate. Even the otherwise difficult detection of non metallic elements like sulfur or fluorine is no problem for the spectrometer. It is employed wherever precise, quick and economic analytics is in demand, for instance in medicine or food control. The spectrometer became a world wide best seller within an incredibly short time.
Adlershof. Science at Work German Aerospace Center (DLR) Transportation Studies Group, Transportation Systems DLR traffic monitoring images supports traffic management e.g. major events (Oktoberfest, FIFA World Cup Soccer Championship) The traffic research project Soccer, operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Transportation Studies Group and Institute for Transportation Systems, was used to assist in traffic management during the FIFA World Cup, using real-time traffic data gathered from the air for a level of service of the current traffic situation and for a traffic forecast. A live stream of digital camera pictures and simultaneously generated aerial maps provided objective visual information about the traffic situation. The project ensured that teams, referees and fans all made it to the match and back home again afterwards - without traffic congestion. April 2014 Berlin and Adlershof, Prof. Dr. Ingolf Hertel 46
Adlershof. Science at Work German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Planetary Research Since april 2006 Venus Express studys our nearest planetary neighbour. It has been built around the design of Mars Express, making it quicker and cheaper to develop. In particular, Venus Express will study the Venusian atmosphere and clouds in unprecedented detail and accuracy. It is ESA's first spacecraft to visit this planet. Venus Express spacecraft in orbit around Venus 3-D radar image of the Maat Mons volcano on Venus The European Mars Express, which was launched on 2 June 2003, is providing important new data on the geology, mineralogy and atmosphere of Mars. The mission was prolonged in 2009 until Mars Express is giving us information about the history of the Red Planet s climate and explaining the role and whereabouts of water on the planet. The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) was developed in DLR's Institute of Planetary Research, Mars is being mapped in three dimensions and colour for the first time.
