1 POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT FOR CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR The mission of KIT is to provide learning opportunities that support recreation, child development and youth enrichment programs to include children with and without disabilities. Recognizing the ABILITY in Every Child Kara Smith PhD, MAT October 2011 Positive Reinforcement A proactive intervention for the classroom -Kareen Smith Learning Objectives Define positive reinforcement in your own words Identify three types of reinforcers that you can use in your classroom Identify one method for choosing a reinforcers for a child in your program 1

2 Positive Reinforcement The child gets attention and is rewarded as positive reinforcement for doing the right thing and will focus on repeating the behavior. Works because it gives the children positive goals to work toward instead of only focusing on negative consequences to avoid. Sets a positive, healthy tone for caregiver-child relationship. Why Positive Reinforcement? Helps a child learn what she can do well Makes a child want to repeat positive behavior Gives children attention that they need Won t make her likely to equate attention with negative behavior Positive reinforcement is not bribing A reward is something you give after the behavior is completed. It could be a surprise. A bribe is something you promise a child before he completes the behavior. Reinforcement is given to bring about desirable change and to teach students to take responsibility for behavior. We should always be coaching toward natural reinforcement. 2

3 What is a Reinforcer A stimulus which follows and is contingent upon a behavior Increases the probability that the behavior will be repeated Reinforcers can be positive or they can be negative Natural Reinforcement Goal should always be natural and direct reinforcement Appropriate bids for attention Help Participation Social Reinforcers Usually socially mediated by caregivers Verbal Written Expression 3

4 Activity Reinforcers Allowing children to participate in preferred activities Allowing a partner is very effective Promotes social reinforcement as well Tangible Reinforcement Something that a child can feel, hold, or see Toys Balloons Stickers Awards Letters home to parents Displaying work Certificates Token Reinforcement Involves points or tokens for appropriate behavior 4

5 You re the Detective! Determine which reinforcer to use by using your observation skills The reinforcer should be valued, preferred, and individualized Observe the student Ask the student Monitor Evaluate Positive Reinforcement Delivery Use a planned reinforcement schedule for consistency Reinforcer should be responsive Improvement should be reinforced, as well Pair any reinforcement with social reinforcement Reinforcement should be age appropriate Tips and Tricks Use a token system like stickers Try to use stickers that the child is interested in, like bugs Verbal praise : be specific Thank you for putting the trains away and sitting on the rug I like the way that you let Noah have a turn I am proud of the way you used your manners When the child is doing something you don t like, stop and think Do you need to use negative language Can you wait and watch for something positive and then explain? 5

6 More Tips and Tricks If a child is doing some things right and some things wrong, focus on what she is doing right This will not reward her bad behavior with your attention Try to compare a child s behavior to her own past behavior when you praise This way he can learn how he is growing Set future goals Q & A Please type your question in the chat box any questions to To help us better serve you and the needs of your program, please take the time to fill out the survey.
