1 The Syndicate a tablet sleeve A padded fabric sleeve for a 7 tablet or e-reader, view A with a zipper closure and view B with an elastic and button closure. suggested fabrics Light to medium weight woven fabric for the self, and lightweight woven fabric for the lining. Felt, fusible fleece or cotton batting for the interlining. Avoid fabrics that are sheer, stretchy, drapey, or with pile. finished dimensions 6.25 x 9.75; inner dimensions 5.75 x 8.5. Fits the ipad mini, Kindle Fire HD, Nook 7 HD, and any similar sized device. preparation & construction notes Set scaling to none in properties when printing this pattern. Measure the 1 x 1 test square before you cut the pattern to make sure it has printed correctly. Cut out patterns along solid black lines. If necessary, tape pattern pieces together at dashed lines, matching pattern name and letters/numbers. Self fabric refers to the main fabric or outside fabric for your project. Yardage listed in materials needed assumes fabric at least 44 wide. You will need extra yardage to match stripes, plaids, or large motifs like paisleys or florals. Press the self, lining, and accent fabrics to remove any wrinkles, *before* laying out the pattern or applying interfacing. Use a lightweight, woven fusible interfacing like Pellon brand Shape-Flex (SF101). Make sure the grainline arrow on the pattern is parallel with the selvage when laying out the pattern on fabric. The dotted lines on the pattern mark the center and true bias. Use them to align with motifs on printed fabrics. Patterns that must be cut on the fold are clearly marked. Align the straight edge of the pattern with the folded edge of the fabric. The fold is also the center of the pattern. There are three great ways to accurately cut fabric: (1) pin patterns to fabric and cut out with scissors (2) use pattern weights and a rotary cutter with a cutting mat (3) use pattern weights and trace patterns with tailor s chalk, then cut out with scissors. Use the method that you are most comfortable with to get the best results. Transfer all notches from the patterns to your fabric with tailor s chalk, or tiny snips in the fabric. Make sure your marks or snips stay inside the seam allowance. All seam allowances are included in each pattern piece, and are noted in each step. For the neatest and strongest seams, double stitch all side, bottom, and weightbearing seams. 2 pattern pieces 1 body 2 lining materials needed 1/4 yard fabric 1/4 yard medium weight fusible interfacing (like Pellon décor bond or craft fuse) 1/8 yard interlining 7 zipper for view A 1/2 button for view B 5 length of narrow elastic for view B zipper foot for your sewing machine directions 1. Cut fabric, interfacing and interlining as indicated on each pattern piece. Trim 1/2 off the top edge of the interlining, as indicated on the pattern. 7. Insert the left side of the zipper tape between the folded top edges of the front of the sleeve, so that the distance between the fold and the zipper teeth is even, and that the zipper pull is 1/2 away from the raw edge. Pin in place. Use a zipper foot to topstitch the zipper in place. step 7 8. Repeat step 7 with the other side of the zipper tape and the back of the sleeve, making sure the raw edges match. step 8 2. Follow manufacturer s directions to apply two layers of medium weight fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the body. Let the first layer cool slightly before applying second layer. 3. Fold under and press 1/2 toward the wrong side along the top edge of the body and lining. step 3 9. With the zipper opened, pin the body to itself and the lining to itself, with right sides facing, making sure raw edges match all the way around. 10. Stitch all the way around using a 3/8 seam allowance, leaving a hole at the bottom of the lining about 3 wide. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the hole, at all four corners, and along the side seams were the body and lining meet. Take care to not stitch over the zipper stops. 4. Trim away a small square of the interlining at the upper corners on both sides. Position the interlining so that this edge of the interlining aligns with the top folded edge of the lining (see image in step 15). 5. If you are using fusible fleece as interlining, follow manufacturer s directions to apply fleece to the wrong side of the lining. If you are using felt or cotton batting, pin and quilt the interlining to the lining in any design you choose. step 10 (skip to step 13 for view B) 6. For view A, pin the body and lining together, wrong sides facing, with top folded edges matching, and raw sides matching. a tablet sleeve 2 of Trim the corners and the seam allowance all the way around, except over the hole in the lining! Turn right side out.
3 12. Close the hole in the lining by pushing the raw edge inside, and stitching the hole closed using a 1/8 seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end of the hole. Push the lining inside the sleeve and press final product carefully, using a press cloth. Skip steps Pin the prepared body pieces together with right sides facing, and folded top edges matching. Stitch together on three raw edges using a 3/8 seam allowance, making sure that at the top the raw edges meet, not the folded edge. step For view B only, transfer markings for the button and elastic from the pattern to the body. Baste the loop of elastic to the right side of the body back, with raw edges matching. Sew on the button by hand (never use a sewing machine to sew on a button) to the body front, making sure to create a shank out of thread for the elastic loop to rest against. step 13 step Repeat step 14 for the prepared linings. Carefully trim the seam allowance all the way around on both the completed body and the completed lining, except along the top 1/2 fold. step Turn the body right side out and press carefully. On the lining, fold down the top 1/2 towards the wrong side. Insert the lining into the body, with wrong sides facing. Match the side seams and the folded top edges and pin in place. step Stitch the lining and body together along the top, 1/8 away from the folded edge. Backstitch at the side seams and over the elastic loop. Press final product carefully using a press cloth. Finished! a tablet sleeve 3 of 5
