2 PROJECT ACTIVITIES In February 2014, Development Aid from People to People Malawi in collaboration with the Department of Nutrition and HIV/AIDS started to implement a project titled: Support to Nutrition Improvement Project in Blantyre and Chiradzulu rural and peri-urban district through provision of minimum package of nutrition interventions offered to targeted communities in the district. The package is aligned with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) 1,000 Special Days. The project seeks to contribute to overall reduction of child stunting, maternal and child anemia in Malawi. This is expected to be achieved through enhancing and scaling up maternal and child nutrition service delivery at community level in Blantyre district. The projects also strengthens existing local development committees, who will backstop on all nutrition, child and maternal health activities at community level. Specifically the project intends to: Reduce malnutrition amongst infants and children Reduce child stunting and; Reduce child and maternal anemia among poor rural communities in the country. The main Activities of the Project are; Elaborated below are main activities that we have implemented during the year to realize the results for the year. A detailed description of activities and targets are included Orienting and supporting district and sub-district level structures to Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component (SNIC) A project For successful implementation of the project activities, DAPP has created awareness about the Project to all stakeholders in order to inform and also solicit support through the following activities; Facilitated a one day planning meeting for 29 members from district and sub-district level structures Oriented 126 District Executive Committee members on the Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component A project at a one day meeting at district level 9 Area Development Committees oriented at one day meeting at district level the Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component A project at a one day meeting at district level 46 District Advisory Committee members (Traditional Authorities, Members of Parliament, etc) 73 Village development committees oriented on Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component A project at a one day meeting at district level Oriented 849 villages (village headman level) on Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component A project at a one day meeting at district level Trained 505 frontline staff (Health Surveillance Assistants, Area Extension Workers, Community Development Agents, and Field Officers) Identified, recruited and oriented 798 lead/community volunteers for the Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component A project at a one day meeting at district level Establish Nutrition and Health Care groups at community level Field Officers and lead/community volunteers mobilized 390,899 people for the establishment of Nutrition and Health Care groups A total of 52, 330 households that includes pregnant and lactating women and their infants have been registered for the nutrition project both in Chiradzulu and Blantyre (the goal for the two districts 20,000 households are expected to be registered in the districts. 626 care groups or Nutrition and Health Care Groups (NHCGs) established at Village Headman level and will be the main extension groups in the project 75 cooking demonstrations, open days and related activities

3 PROJECT Activities Improved infants and young child feeding practices by caregivers 52,330 Sensitized households including pregnant and lactating mothers on the SUN interventions minimum package) 75 cooking demonstrations on complementary feeding in care groups demonstrating recipes for infants (i.e. porridge made with mgaiwa flour, mashed nsima with vegetables, boiled mashed potatoes with small amounts of oil etc) Improve prevention of malaria and parasitic infections 2100 mosquito nets distributed to health facilities so that pregnant, lactating mothers and their infants can have access and sleep under these nets Improve iron intake through consumption of iron rich foods and iron supplementation to women and children Counsel pregnant and lactating women through door to door visits on the importance of eating iron rich foods such as (dark leafy vegetables, meat, dried fruits, pulses, liver, eggs, small dried fish and milk) and also Vitamin A, and Vitamin C rich foods i.e. fruits and vegetables. 394 backyard demonstrations gardens mounted where crops rich in iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C will be demonstrated. Improve dietary intake by women before, during and after pregnancy. 75 cooking demonstration held every month on the importance of eating of Vitamin A rich vegetables including kholowa, bonongwe, mpiru, chisoso, cham wamba, and luni, yellow fruits such as pawpaw, mango, pumpkins, carrots, orange, and sweet potato in supplementation to lactating women within 8 weeks after delivery and to children from six months of age every six months until the child is five years.

4 EFFECTS OF THE PROJECT The activities has contributed to reduced malnutrition amongst infants and children in the communities we are serving During the coming years the project will: Contribute to reduced child stunting in the communities that the project is serving Contribute to reduced child and maternal anaemia among poor rural communities in the country. Contribute to improved infants and young child feeding practices by caregivers Contribute to improved hygiene (personal, food and environmental) and utilization of safe water and sanitation Contribute to reduced malaria infections through information provided on prevention of malaria and parasitic infections Contribute to improved iron intake through consumption of iron rich foods and iron supplementation to women and their children Improved dietary intake by women before, during and after pregnancy. Improved household care of pregnant women and utilization of ANC services Improved spacing of pregnancy for mothers postpartum Contribute to adequate weight gain in children under two and pregnant women

5 PROJECT IN NUMBERS DAPP BLANTYRE AND CHIRADULU NUTRI- TION PROJECT GOAL 2014 ACHIEVED BALANCE Identification and recruiting of Field Officers Hold one day planning meeting with selected members of District Executive Committee (40 members) to strategize on how to orient district and sub-district level structures Orient 130 District Executive Committee members of the Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component (A) project at one day session Orient the District Advisory Committee (Traditional Authorities and Members of Parliament on Scaling-up Nutrition Improvement Component (A) project Orient 7 Traditional Authorities and Area Development Committees on the project intervention Orient 73 Village Development Committees on the project intervention at a one day session Orient 720 villages on the project intervention at a one day session Identify and recruit 1000 lead /community volunteers from the formed village Nutrition Care Groups 500 in each District Train 40 district core team embers in the target districts Train 500 front liners { nurses, Field Officers,HSAs AEDOS and CDAs. Mobilize and sensitize 50% of the population of the 400,000villagers on the nutrition project Recruit 1000 volunteers in project interventions in line with SUN Register households with pregnant and Lactating women and mother guardians with children of two years Conduct monthly cooking demonstration on six food groups Establish 730 Care Groups or Health and Nutrition Care Groups Support 730 Backyard demonstration gardens with inputs at village level Distribution of Long Lasting Insects Treated Nets to Health Centres where pre, lactating mothers access to ensure sleep under Nets , ,

6 PROJECT IN PICTURES The project involves males in its mobilization against stunting and malnourishment through cooking demonstrations and other forms of communication. The community has started making their own backyard gardens when they were mobilized on the importance of good nutrition using fresh vegetables and eating a variety of nutritious food dishes containing different vital nutrients

7 PROJECT IN PICTURES Field Officers conducted different community mobilization meetings in all the 7 Traditional Authorities from the two Districts of Chiradzulu and Blantyre. All pregnant mothers, breast feeding mothers and HIV positive women are mobilized to come together for monthly Nutrition Education provided by either a Field Officer or Lead Parent Volunteer from their Group.
