4 Application Settings Purpose - ability to store and retrieve named values - use for custom application and user preferences - can bind directly to form and control properties Limitations - each setting must have a unique name - works with any data type that is - XML serializable - has a TypeConverter that implements ToString/FromString - cannot be used with class libraries

5 Application Settings Scope Scope defines storage location - each setting has a scope property (Application or User) Application scope - for settings are associated with the application - uses App.config or Web.config for storage - file is created when first setting is added - use project properties settings to activate editor - App.config is renamed to <assemblyname>.config on build - users cannot change the values at run time - example: connection strings

6 Application Settings User Scope User scope - settings are associated with the user (executing the application) - default values are read from the application config file - uses User.config for storage c:\documents and Settings\User\Application Data\ CompanyName\AssemblyIdentifier\AssemblyVersion\ - users can change the values at run time - file is not created until a setting is modified - examples: window size and position, font choices, etc.

7 Application Settings Events Events - SettingChanging (raised before a setting's value is changed) - PropertyChanged (raised after a setting's value is changed) - SettingsLoaded (raised after the setting values are loaded) - SettingsSaving (raised before the setting values are saved) Notice the weird naming scheme!

8 Application Settings Final Words Secure - supports encryption - special support for storing encrypted connection strings Conclusion - vast improvement over the old configuration subsystem - much more flexible and user friendly - built-in editor (IDE support) - read/write ability and scope rules

9 System.Configuration Full Control - ability to modify App.config at run time - add/remove custom configuration sections - ability to lock items (write protection) - ability to revert to parent setting (reset User.config setting) - ability to protect and unprotect properties (encryption)

10 Demonstration Password Safe - small application to maintain a list of passwords - passwords are protected by master password - uses two User scope application settings - uses a custom configuration section

11 Enterprise Library Latest CTP builds upon System.Configuration - old Configuration Management Block no longer supported Configuration Tool (design time) - provides additional design time support - wizards - property sheets - validation - improved security - improved encryption - masking

12 Gentle.Configuration Advantages - easier to use - much easier handling of lists (using method callbacks) - automatic and transparent type conversion - supports any configuration source (XmlNode or Stream) - cross-platform (.NET and Mono) - free (open-source) - mature and stable

14 Nini Advantages - multiple configuration types (INI, XML, Registry, and command line) - strongly typed variable types (eliminates casts) - merging (merge several configs into one) - value aliases (add aliases for unclear variables) - key value replacement (copy) - fully documented (see the Nini manual and API reference) - unlimited files/sources - cross-platform (.NET ,.NET Compact Framework and Mono) - mature and stable (over 140 unit tests)
