3 Go global go stenden Stenden University of Applied Sciences Stenden University of Applied Sciences is an internationally oriented university with over 11,000 students, of whom over 2900 are internationals. With 90 different nationalities represented, Stenden is a truly international community. We have International Branch Campuses in Bangkok (Thailand), Doha (Qatar), Port Alfred (South Africa), Bali (Indonesia) and in the Netherlands: Leeuwarden (main campus), Groningen, Meppel, Assen and Emmen. Specific study programmes are offered, from associate degree to master s degree level, all within the fields of (Service) Management, Education, Welfare, Economics and Technology. The lecturers at Stenden are all experts in their fields, with extensive theoretical background and work experience in a wide variety of industries. We therefore teach our students to work in teams and also to take initiative through Problem based learning (PBL). We give the students the opportunity to work in our acclaimed learning companies actual businesses in which students accumulate valuable and relevant work experience. PBL will help you to develop and strengthen personal and professional skills which later on in your professional life will enable you to handle each challenge as it occurs. It involves small groups of between 6 and 12 students meeting twice weekly to work systematically together on analyzing a case, brainstorming, setting learning goals, studying and coming up with creative solutions to problems which reflect real-life situations, this all under the supervision of a tutor. PBL requires effective planning, clear arrangements and considerable self-discipline.

Please note, it is not advisable to come to Stenden to study if your level is lower than this. Experience has shown that such students who come to Stenden needing to improve their English to IELTS 6.0 during their exchange period almost always fail large parts or all of their courses. In addition, due to the interactive nature of the modules, with a large emphasis on group work, they cause significant difficulties for fellow students with whom they have to work. Workload Stenden University uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) The ECTS system was developed by the European Commission to guarantee recognition of credits gained abroad. ECTS credits describe the student workload required to complete a course unit. 60 ECTS represent the workload of a year of fulltime study; 30 ECTS credits that of a semester. 6 Go global go stenden The Netherlands, International By Definition 6 The Netherlands, also known as Holland is located in the very heart of Europe. Thanks to successful export, industries and major multinationals, like Philips, ING, Unilever and AKzo Nobel, the Netherlands is much more important than the size on the map would suggest. International trade have been the cornerstone of the Dutch economy since the 17th century, which remains particularly open and internationally-oriented to this day. Being a hub for European and intercontinental travel, the Netherlands benefits from dense and efficient road and rail networks. Open and diverse The Netherlands is home to over 190 different nationalities. This cultural diversity has made it a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures all over the world come together. Thanks to the country s international orientation, other languages are widely spoken, -familiarity with French and German is common and you ll be hard pressed to find anyone you cannot communicate with in English. Another distinctive charactistic of the Dutch is their openness in personal interaction and direct manner of acting and speaking. Cycling, sailing and ice skating In the Netherlands, you will find many lakes, rivers, canals and a long coastline. Much of the land is so low that huge walls called dykes are used to hold the sea back. There is no better country for cycling, and sailing, but don t forget the ice-skating in winter. There is no shortage of entertainment either. Theatre, music festivals and sports are also very popular. Color orange There is great public enthusiasm for the traditions associated with the monarchy, such as Queens Day on 30 April, when the whole country takes to the streets decked out in orange for a gigantic party. Much of the same is true when the national football team does well, such as the last World Cup. Did you know that: One quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level? On average, the Dutch are the tallest people in the world? People in Holland eat raw herring with onions on top? There are twice as many bikes as cars in the Netherlands? 7 Go global go stenden Leeuwarden LEEUWARDEN Leeuwarden is the capital of the province Friesland, a small city with a pleasant atmosphere, which will make you feel at home soon. With over 25,000 Dutch and international students at three universities, Leeuwarden can be considered as a truly international student town! The heart of the city is very old and lively, with beautiful old buildings, theatres, movie houses, friendly and trendy pubs, museums, great events and a nice city park. Like Amsterdam, Leeuwarden has a long system of canals. Along the canals you can enjoy a good meal or drink on one of the many terraces. The best way to explore the city is by foot or bike. Fast trains services link Leeuwarden with Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Schiphol Airport and the rest of Europe. Exchange students support Although you have come to study, you must not ignore your social life. The Foreign Relations Committee (Frec) provides a social programme especially for exchange students with weekend trips, parties, sports, events, dinners etc. FREC will support you, from the day of your arrival until the day of your departure. You can find more information about Frec on: Studying in Leeuwarden (Netherlands) is a wonderful experience due to the fact that it is a small town where one can really enjoy student life. With regard to Stenden, it is full of international students which enriches the intercultural learning experience. Studying in a totally different educational system and environment is challenging because it takes some time to adapt, but the quality of the education is really good and it is very personalized as lectures and workshops are composed for small groups of students. To work in small groups is also challenging because everyone has different opinions and backgrounds. 8 Go global go stenden Emmen 8 EMMEN Emmen, a town of nearly 110,000 inhabitants is situated 125 kilometers from Leeuwarden in the south - eastern part of the attractive province of Drenthe in the north of the Netherlands. The town is close to the German border and approximately 2 hours travelling from Amsterdam. Emmen was voted the country s most attractive leisure municipality in It is also the focus of the largest connected industrial area in the north of the country. Emmen is situated on the southernmost top of a chain of low hills called the Hondsrug, an area with many forests that is popular with tourists. This part of the country is also well known for its hunebedden (dolmens), Stone Age burial chambers and for DierenparkEmmen one of Europe s finest zoos, which is located in the centre of Emmen. The local EST offers help, guidance and other valuable information. EST also organizes weekend trips, parties and short events. Accommodation Stenden University of Applied Sciences, location Emmen has its own campus for international students. The campus is located about 600 meters from the university and consists of 104 furnished rooms. All flats are shared by 4 persons. Each student has his/her own bedroom.

9 Meppel MEPPEL Meppel, also called the Gateway to Drenthe, provides access to the moorland area, scattered with small villages, woods and lakes. The town has about 31,000 inhabitants and lies in the romantic valley of the river Reest. Many buildings in the town centre still have old picturesque facades, and narrow streets alternate with modern shopping malls. Meppel offers many cultural and recreational facilities like museums, theatre, pubs, swimming pool and sports fields. Meppel has a fast train connection with the western part of the Netherlands. You can travel to Amsterdam in one and a half hour. Utrecht can be reached within one hour. Activities for exchange students The staff of Stenden organizes several events like a Dutch evening, excursions to interesting Dutch villages and great activities to explore the countryside. 9 Accommodation Students are accommodated in or near the centre of Meppel in complete furnished family houses rented by Stenden. All flats are shared by 4 persons. Each student has his/her own bedroom. My exchange period in Meppel has been really positive and exciting. During my stay I had a great introduction to the Dutch culture and it was interesting to get to know the lifestyle of the locals. I made friends with students from almost all over Europe and I took part in various excursions organized exclusively for Erasmus students. For me it was a life changing experience! 11 Practical Information Academic Calendar The academic year is divided into two semesters; spring and autumn. Spring semester starts in February Autumn semester starts in September Each semester consists of 2 modules of 9 weeks A residence permit is required for all exchange students (except residents of the EU/EEA) who intend to stay in the Netherlands for more than three months. The Student Mobility Centre will send you all the necessary information and also help you with the procedures. For the exact dates check >incoming exchange 11 Application deadline Erasmus Exchange students 15th May for the autumn semester 15th November for the spring semester Exchange students from partner universities outside Europe 15th April for the autumn semester/ the following academic year 15th October for the spring semester Application process After receiving your nomination by your host university, we will send you a link of the online application from. The following documents must be attached to your (digital) application: Picture page in passport Passport picture Visa requirements (non European students) Depending on the country of citizenship, a foreign student may enter the Netherlands by means of one of the following three options: 1. EU identity card 2. Passport 3. Entry visa All foreign students (except residents of the EU/EEA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Monaca, USA and Switzerland) who will stay in the Netherlands for more than three months need a visa to enter the Netherlands to study. Acceptance: The Student Mobility Centre will send the Letter of Offer and other important information concerning the exchange period at Stenden a couple of weeks after the application deadline.
