25 CHRYSLER AXLE IDENTIFICATION Four different makes and various configurations of front axles can be found on these domes tic built vehicles. Through 1983 GKN and Citroen axles were used. In 1984 an ACI axle was added to these two, then in 1986 a Saginaw axle was added. In 1988 GKN introduced a "Closed Housing" along with the "Open Housing" that they had been using since In 1991 the Saginaw axles for Chrysler vehicles underwent a design change, the inboard joints were now "Y" shaped instead of round also saw a change in GKN as they introduced a hard thermoplastic boot on the outboard joint as well as a plastic cap on the inboard joint. Some of models came equipped with GKN design axles on the right side and Saginaw design axles on the left side. The boots for these four makes and various configurations of axles are not interchangeable. To make sure of selecting the correct parts, carefully study the drawings which will allow you to easily identify which axle and boot is fitted to the car being worked on. 32
