CHRISTIANITY Sydney Hancock Jared Mills Kevin Nguyen

FOUNDER The founder of Christianity was Saint Paul, or Paul the Apostle. Prior to being Paul, he was known as Saul of Tarsus or Saul the persecutor of the Christian church. He was a devoted Jew who had the right to persecute people who worshiped the Lord. Paul spread the word and belief of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire, prior to that he had churches in Asia Minor and Greece.

DATE FOUNDED Christianity was formed around C.E. it developed out of Judaism in the 1 st century C.E. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth s or Jesus Christ s life, death, and resurrection.

BASIC BELIEFS Christians believe that there is only one God and they call him Father as Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth taught them. Christians recognize Jesus as the son of God who was sent to save mankind from death and sin. Christians believe in justification by faith, by believing in Jesus as the son of God, they can have a right relationship with God whose forgiveness was made once and for all through the death of Jesus Christ. The Holy Trinity is God, in the form of Jesus, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Christians believe that there is a life after death.

GODS/GODDESSES Christianity is a monotheistic religion with their deity as God who is the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity, God, is composed of the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ, also known as Jesus of Nazareth, and the Holy Spirit. God is believed to be all-powerful and all-knowing.

CONCEPT OF AFTERLIFE The concept of afterlife in the Christian religion differentiates between a heaven and a hell. Christians believe that there souls are immortal entities that leave the body after death. When looking into the text it describes death as an eternal sleep multiple times. The belief of eternal life after death is believed, but the belief of earthly reincarnation is not. God hates sin and will punish the transgressor by not allowing them to join him spiritually in his kingdom after death.

RELIGIOUS TEXT(S) The Holy Bible consists of 66 books that has been written by over 40 authors in a period of approximately 1,500 years in three different languages. The main theme of the bible is gods plan of salvation. Gods plan of salvation is to provide deliverance from sin and to provide spiritual death through repentance and faith. The old testament, also known as the Jewish Tanakh, was written in mostly Hebrew with a small percentage or Aramaic. The old testament contains the first 39 books of the bible, and contains information on the creation of the universe. The New Testament is a 27 book long record of the saving of Jesus of Nazareth, his life, death, resurrection, and ascension. The Gospels written by Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. The first three gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Gospels contain information about the events of Jesus life and death. Matthew s gospel was directed towards the Hebrews. Mark s gospel was directed towards the Romans. Luke s gospel was directed towards the Greeks. John s gospel was directed towards all dialects.

GEOGRAPHIC AREA Spread to Rome Tended to spread north and to other areas across the world. Started in Palestine, then moved to Jerusalem. Christianity began in Palestine, a land considered to be the Promised land by the Jews, then spread to Jerusalem. Around 64 B.C the Romans had ruled Palestine and had Jerusalem under their control. Within the Roman Empire, Saint Paul began to spread the belief of Christianity which later spread from the Roman Empire to other parts of the world.

NUMBER OF BELIEVERS TODAY The number of Christians around the world has quadrupled over the past 100 years, from about 600 million believers in 1910 to over 2 billion believers in Today, the number of believers are estimated to be over 2 billion. Christians make up 32% of the world s population, close to what they made up over a century ago (35%).

INTERACTION WITH POLITICS/ GOVERNMENT Christians were faced with many difficulties under the Roman Empire, they would often be persecuted and punished, often times with death, by the Emperor Nero in 64 A.D. Christians are believed to be persecuted often because of their refusal to be sacrifices to pagan gods within the Roman Empire. Most of the persecutions depended on local governors and how zealously or not they pursued and prosecuted Christians. Constantine I was the first emperor to successfully convert the Roman Empire to Christianity, ending the persecutions of Christians. Constantine did this only for political reasons.
