2 The University of Ghana announces for the information of the general public that applications are open for the admission of prospective applicants into various undergraduate programmes for the 2014/2015 academic year. Applicants should take note of the following: i) All prospective applicants are advised to visit the University s website and carefully read all relevant information and guidelines for prospective applicants before applying. ii) iii) iv) All applicants in Ghana who will be writing WASSCE in May/June 2014 are eligible to apply. When the results of the May/June 2014 WASSCE are released, such applicants will be given a few days within which they can go back into their online application form to make changes in their programme selection if they so wish. For the Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme, applicants are required to select subjects from the list of bouquets provided. Up to four (4) subject bouquets must be selected in order of preference. There is direct admission of applicants into all programmes offered by the College of Health Sciences but as first choice only. For second and third choices, applicants are strongly advised to choose courses from the Sciences. v) There is direct admission of applicants into the various Programmes available in the Faculty of Science. Applicants will be expected to select up to four (4) choices in order of preference. vi) vii) viii) Applicants who select either B.Sc. Administration or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) as first choice are advised strongly to select bouquets from the Humanities as second choice to enhance their chances of gaining admission. Holders of other qualifications including International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE, GCSE, American Grade 12 examinations which hitherto were admitted to Level 200, will be admitted to Level 100. All students entering the BA progamme must offer three (3) subjects at Level 100, two (2) subjects at Level 200 and Level 300 and either two (2) subjects or one (1) subject at Level 400. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE PROGRAMMES WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS General Entry Requirements To be admitted to any Degree programme, Senior High School graduates must possess: At least credits (A1 - C6 in WASSCE and A D in SSSCE) in English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science (for Science applicants) or Social Studies (for non-science applicants) and three elective subjects in Science for applicants applying to Science or Agriculture related disciplines or three elective subjects in General Arts/Business for applicants applying to non-science related disciplines, with the total aggregate not exceeding 24.. In addition, Science applicants should have at least a grade C6 in WASSCE/D in SSSCE in Social Studies/Life Skills and non-science applicants should also have at least a grade C6 in WASSCE/D IN SSSCE in Integrated Science/Core Science The required subjects for specific programmes (in calculating aggregates) are as follows: 1. Bachelor of Arts/B.Sc. Administration/Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Core Mathematics, English & Social Studies Any Three Electives For the following subjects, applicants must have at least B2 in Elective Mathematics. Economics Mathematics Applicants must have at least B3 in French to qualify to read French. 2. Bachelor of Fine Arts Core Mathematics, English & Social Studies Any Three Electives The programme is open to applicants interested in the Performing Arts with aggregate 24 or better. They will be expected to attend an audition or interview. 3. WASSCE Applicants: Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science Three Electives: Chemistry, Physics & either Biology or Elective Mathematics ii. First Degree Holders: An applicant with a Bachelor s degree in Biological or Physical Sciences from a recognized University may be considered for admission on the recommendation of a special committee appointed by the Dean. The special committee shall vet the transcript of the applicant as well as course contents of the degrees, with a view to determine suitability of previous training and make recommendations to the University s Admissions Board. iii. Other Qualifications: a. Applicants in possession of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) awarded by the University of Ghana with a minimum FGPA of 3.25 (Grade B) may be considered for admission to Level 200 of the B.Sc.(Medical Laboratory Science) degree programme. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in science or credit passes in five subjects including English Language, 6

7 Science and Mathematics at the GCE O Level as well as passes in two science subjects at the GCE A Level. Applicants shall be required to attend a selection interview. b. Applicants in possession of the 3-year post Secondary Certificates in Radiography and Medical Laboratory Technology may be considered for admission to Level 100 of the B.Sc. (Diagnostic Radiography/Therapy Radiography) and B.Sc. (Medical Laboratory Sciences) degree programmes respectively. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in science or credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE O Level as well as passes in two science subjects at the GCE A Level. Applicants will be required to sit an entrance examination and pass an interview. c. Applicants in possession of Higher National Diploma Laboratory Science with FGPA of 4.00 or better, or Diploma in Laboratory Science with a minimum FGPA of 3.25 (Grade B) may be considered for admission to Level 200 in Medical Laboratory Sciences. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in science or credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE O Level as well as passes in two science subjects at the GCE A Level. Applicants will be required to sit an entrance examination and pass an interview. 10. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Three Electives from Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics, General Agriculture/Biology, Geography/Economics 11. Textiles & Clothing Human Development Family Resource Management Food & Nutrition 13. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Six Years) i. Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science Three Electives: Biology, Chemistry & either Physics or Elective Mathematics ii. B.Sc. Degree in Animal Science, Biological or Allied Sciences iii. Diploma in Animal Health (Distinction) plus the minimum requirements for admission into the University of Ghana. Applicants who qualify under categories (ii) and (iii) would be admitted to level 200 of the programme. 12. Bachelor of Science in Nursing i. WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science Three Electives from: a. Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Elective Mathematics b. General Agriculture, Physics & Chemistry c. Three General Arts Electives d. Two General Arts Electives plus Food & Nutrition e. Any three of the following Electives: Economics, Management in Living, Food & Nutrition, Chemistry, General Knowledge in Art and French. ii. Diploma to Degree Applicants Applicants must be holders of a Diploma awarded by a recognized University, with a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) of 3.25 or better. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in the appropriate subjects or credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE O Level as well as passes in two subjects at the GCE A Level. An entrance Examination will be conducted on Saturday April 27, 2013 for all applicants. 8

9 All WASSCE/SSSCE holders should submit WAEC results checker card(s) to the Admissions Office by April 11, 2014 otherwise their applications will not be considered. Applicants should submit one card for each set of results submitted for consideration 13. Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science Three Electives including Elective Mathematics (A1) 14. Bachelor of Public Health The Bachelor of Public Health programme is designed with the view to develop capacity to improve the implementation of public health programmes and interventions. It is intended to help develop middle-level public health practitioners who will work at the district level and programme level in the Ghana Health Service and its Allied Institutions. The undergraduate programme is also to offer opportunities for these middle-level health professionals to upgrade themselves and promote continuing professional development. Applicants should have been recommended by the Ministry of Health (MOH) / Ghana Health Service (GHS) to pursue the Bachelor of Public Health programme. The following programme options are available: Applied Environmental Health Sciences Disease Prevention & Control Health Information Systems Health Promotion Nutrition Public Health Nursing Admission requirements (peculiar to the School) are as follows: i. Applicants with Diplomas awarded by the University of Ghana, Institutions recognized by or affiliated to the University of Ghana and Institutions under the Ministry of Health, shall require and FGPA of 3.25 or better/equivalent and shall attend a selection interview organized by the School of Public Health. ii. Diplomas awarded by institutions other than those indicated in (i) above, may be considered eligible on recommendation by a special Committee. Shortlisted applicants shall be required to sit an entrance examination and attend a selection interview. iii. Applicants would be credited with courses undertaken at the diploma level. All successful applicants will be admitted to Level 200. APPLICANTS IN POSSESSION OF UNIVERSITY OF GHANA DIPLOMAS: Holders of University of Ghana Diplomas or recognised equivalents, with a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) of 3.25 or better in any of the under-listed programmes, are eligible to apply to the SAME area of study, and supported with two other subjects in a related field, for admission. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two 9

10 (2) electives in the appropriate subjects or credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE O Level as well as passes in two subjects at the GCE A Level. All Diploma holders will be admitted to Level 200 in the same subject area as their diploma qualification. Medical Laboratory Sciences ** (Open to applicants who have participated in the top-up programme since AUGUST Applicants will also be expected to take an aptitude test at the University on the Saturday April 26, 2014 at 8.00 a.m. The deadline for applicants who have participated in the top-up programme to submit their on-line application form is Friday April 11, Applicants will receive Index Numbers and venues for the examination immediately they successfully submit their applications on-line. They are expected to print out the information for their reference only. They are not to bring them to the examination centre. Holders of Higher National Diplomas (HND) from a recognized Polytechnic with a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) of 4.00 or better in any of the under-listed programmes, are eligible to apply to the SAME area of study, and where required, supported with one other subject in a related field, for admission. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in the appropriate subjects or credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE O Level as well as passes in two subjects at the GCE A Level. All Diploma/HND to Degree applicants who are WASSCE/SSSCE holders should submit WAEC results checker card(s) to the Admissions Office by April 11, 2014 otherwise their applications will not be considered. Applicants should submit one card for each set of results submitted for consideration. Applicants may be asked to write an entrance examination and/or attend an interview as part of the admission process. Level 100 a. Bachelor of Arts Subjects available for the Bachelor of Arts are: Adult Education, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Social Work, History, Philosophy & Classics, English, Linguistics, Religions, Psychology, Archaeology, Information Studies, Theatre Arts, French and Geography and Resource Development b. Bachelor of Science in Administration 11

12 Level 200 a. Bachelor of Arts (Diploma Holders only) Subjects available are: Information Studies, Adult Education, Study of Religions b. Bachelor of Science in Administration ii) DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAMME: Entry requirements into Distance Education Programme are the same as pertains at the main Legon campus. The Distance Education Programme (Fee-paying and non-residential) offers courses in the Humanities and currently offers courses leading to the award of BA and B.Sc. (Administration) degrees. This Programme is run by the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education, University of Ghana, Legon and its 10 Regional Centres (Workers Colleges). Students will have periodic meetings with Course Tutors at designated Study Centres. All end-ofsemester examinations will be conducted at the University of Ghana, at Legon. Entry will be at both Levels 100 and 200. Level 100 a. Bachelor of Arts Subjects available for the Bachelor of Arts are: Adult Education, Economics, Geography and Resource Development, Linguistics, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Information Studies, Political Science and History The subjects have been put into bouquets and applicants are expected to make up to 4 (four) choices. b. Bachelor of Science in Administration Level 200 a. Bachelor of Arts (Diploma Holders only) Subjects available are: Adult Education, History, Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology, Information Studies and Social Work b. Bachelor of Science in Administration GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ALL APPLICANTS 1. All applications must be submitted ONLINE at on the purchase of the University of Ghana application e-voucher. 2. All applicants will be considered on the basis of result equivalents as provided by the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), as per schedule below: 12

Qualified Applicants to the Bachelor s degree on the Legon Campus who are unable to meet the competitive cut-off points determined by the Admissions Board for admission to preferred programmes of study may opt for the Fee-paying Scheme. Interested applicants must indicate this option on their application forms. 4. All applicants who have ever attended or graduated with Certificate/Diploma from the University of Ghana from 1996 to date should indicate their **STUDENT IDENTITY NUMBERS** on their application forms. The same number will be used in the intended programme of study if admitted. 5. All Applicants must take note that the process for admission to the University of Ghana is very transparent. Applicants should therefore beware of any persons who may approach them on the pretext of assisting them gain admission for a fee. 6. Since the 2007/2008 academic year, the University of Ghana has ceased to admit applicants with the West African Examination Council s Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates. HOW TO APPLY i) GHANAIAN APPLICANTS TO DEGREE PROGRAMMES University of Ghana on-line application E-VOUCHERS can be obtained by Ghanaian applicants for GH at the following banks: Ecobank, HFC Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, Ghana Commercial Bank, Zenith Bank, Merchant Bank, UniBank and Fidelity Bank. Ghanaian applicants in the following categories are expected to apply using the E-VOUCHER: o WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants o Diploma/ HND to Degree Applicants 13

14 At the Bank, applicants will be required to indicate their names, mobile phone numbers and e- mail addresses on the bank voucher before they are served. Those without addresses will however not be disadvantaged. A confirmation of their PIN will be sent to their mobile phones. Applicants should buy the University of Ghana application E-VOUCHER and CAREFULLY follow the instructions given. After the application has been submitted on-line, the PIN should be kept in a safe place as they may be required by applicants when assessing their admission status at a later date. They will also be required to present the e-vouchers to any of the Institute of Continuing and Distance (ICDE) Centres in the regions or to the Alumni Centre area (Legon Campus) for a copy of a prospectus and CD ROM after they purchase the e-voucher. After submission of the online application, Diploma to Degree and HND applicants are expected to submit the following documents to the address below. a. Two (2) original copies of Diploma/HND transcripts b. Where applicable, two (2) certified copies of O and A Level certificates/result slips. c. All Diploma/HND to Degree applicants who are WASSCE/SSSCE holders should submit WAEC results checker card(s) to the Admissions Office by April 11, 2014 otherwise their applications will not be considered. After completing and submitting the form on-line, applicants are to print a proof of submission, add all relevant certificates and send to the address given below with a non-refundable fee of US$ or its equivalent in International Money Order. Applicants in the West African subregion should pay the application fee through Ecobank. The original copy of the pay-in slip should be added to the downloaded form and other documents. Completed documents are to be sent to the address given above. iii) GHANAIANS WITH FOREIGN BACKGROUND Ghanaians who apply with foreign qualifications from schools which write the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the IGCSE such as Alpha Beta, Faith Montessori International School, Ghana International School, New Nation International School, SOS Hermann GMEINER International College and Tema International School etc., should follow the application procedure for international applicants stated above. They should however pay the application fee of GH through any Ecobank branch and submit the original copy of the pay-in slip to the above given address together with a copy of the other specified documents. 14
