Prepare yourself for the Journey of a Lifetime! I hope you ve packed, because you re about to embark on an adventure that will take to the farthest corners of the globe, to new experiences, and to unforgettable memories. During your stay at Magness, you ll learn new skills, engage in new activities, and create some of the best memories in the Scouting movement. My name is Russell Maranto, and as the Camp Director here at Magness Adventure Camp, I cannot tell you how excited we are to have you here this summer! This will be my sixth summer at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch, and my second summer as Magness Camp Director. There s no way to describe how pleased I am to be here. It s no secret that Scouts who attend some kind of summer camp are much more likely to remain involved in Scouting as they age, and I firmly believe that providing them with a phenomenal experience allows both the Scouts, and you, the parents, to see Scouting s benefits. Everything from the fun and games, to the outdoor adventures and relaxing activities all culminate into a brief chapter of a Scout s life that showcases the most important aspects of the movement. Attending Magness Adventure Camp as a Cub Scout cemented my place in Scouting, and I fully intend to make both you, and your Scout s experience just as meaningful. In order to accomplish this, we ve overhauled Magness program for the second time in as many years, constantly striving to provide you with the best Scouting experience possible. Last year, we implemented an assortment of rank and age specific activities, working to diversify the camp experience. This year, we ve taken the comments and opinions of campers and further improved on our unique formula. This summer, we re introducing specialized counselors, placing more emphasis on activities that can only occur at camp, and adding a new focus to the requirements of Cub Scouting s adventures. In order to achieve our goals, we ve handpicked each of our staff members, and provided them with specialized training designed to provide you the best experience Scouting can offer. I m confident your experience at Magness Adventure camp will exceed your expectations, and again, I cannot express how excited we are to serve you this summer. Russell Maranto Camp Director Magness Adventure Camp russell.maranto@scouting.org
Welcome Adventurers to Magness World Adventurer Society! Greetings, I am Max Pivonka, Lead Explorer at Magness World Adventurer Society, and I am pleased to welcome you as Explorer Initiates to our world class program. Here you will learn from the best world explorers of our time and discover many far flung regions of the world. With the help of our explorer trainers you will gain the skills and knowledge to become successful world adventurers, learning by doing, gaining experience by participating in adventures with your fellow Scouts, and becoming knowledgeable of many of our world s cultures along the way. In the process of learning to become world adventurers, you will also be completing many of your required adventure requirements for your Cub Scout ranks of Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos; as well as many elective adventures including Backyard Jungle, Howling at the Moon, Forensics, and Into the Woods. With my four years of experience with adventure at Magness Adventure Camp, I can tell you this will be our best summer yet. We look forward to seeing you this summer and hope that you will prepare for your training and look the part of world explorer, until then remember, Adventure is Out There! 6 MISSION STATEMENTS These statements are the core of Scouting, and staff members often remind Cub Scouts of them to help guide their actions. We believe all campers and staff at Magness should strive to live by these values. Boy Scouts of America Mission Statement The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch Mission Statement The mission of the Denver Area Council summer camping program is to provide each Scout with a memorable and challenging outdoor experience. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch enriches the fundamentals of Scouting through unique opportunities for leadership and educational growth. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch, and the Denver Area Council, BSA, is an equal opportunity facility that does not discriminate on the basis of sex, color, race, creed or religion. Cub Scouting Purposes The Cub Scouting program has 10 purposes related to the overall mission of the Boy Scouts of America to build character, learn citizenship, and develop personal fitness: 1. Character Development 2. Spiritual Growth 3. Good Citizenship 4. Sportsmanship & Fitness 5. Family Understanding 6. Respectful Relationships 7. Personal Achievement 8. Friendly Service 9. Fun and Adventure 10. Preparation for Boy Scouts Scout Law A Scout is: Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent Remember the Cub Scout Motto: Do your best! Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
WELCOME TO PEACEFUL VALLEY SCOUT RANCH! Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is located in central Colorado, 65 miles southeast of Denver, a few miles south of the town of Elbert. The ranch consists of 3,316 acres of mountain park terrain, 7,000 feet in elevation, along the Palmer Divide in the Black Forest. Peaceful Valley also functions as a working ranch throughout the year, with over 1,000 acres devoted to farming and grazing. There are three different Scout camps located on Peaceful Valley. A more detailed history of Peaceful Valley, and a description of all three camps, can be found in the general Peaceful Valley Guide for Leaders and Campers, which can be found the Denver Area Council s website under the camping tab. Magness Adventure Camp Facilities Magness has three separate shelters, Eagle s Nest, Lizard Head and Lost Creek. Each shelter is wheel-chair accessible and offers running water, flush toilets and hot showers, as well as a large, centrally located dining area, where meals prepared in the Coors Commissary will be served. There are 60 tents on permanent cement platforms surrounding each shelter and each tent has two cots with foam pads. An additional pad can be supplied for a third person or child under 5, if requested. Campers may also pitch their own tents around the shelters, though space can be limited. The Main Office and a well-stocked Medical Lodge are at the Headquarters building, directly next to our local Trading Post where many exciting toys, tools, costumes, and clothing items - as well as cold drinks, candy and ice cream - can be purchased. At the center of the Magness Shelters is Lake Kiewit, where camp participants can use canoes, paddleboats and rowboats, as well as swim, fish, and observe many wild animals in their natural habitat, including turtles and toads! On the northern side of Magness are BB Gun Ranges, a Tomahawk Range, an Archery Range, and a Slingshot Range for guests to test their targeting skills! On the way to the ranges is the famous Magness Watch Tower, which is a fond memory for the thousands of Cub Scouts who have climbed it. All of these facilities are bordered on the North Eastern side by the First and Second Mesa, where all guests will can spend their time simply observing nature, and where Webelos will be able to camp overnight!
Magness Program Cub Scouts and their families can expect a theme and activity-filled four days. After check-in and move-in the session kicks off with a camp-wide flag ceremony, ice cream social, and the opening campfire! Days 2 and 3 are spent with the Cub Scouts in Dens which are organized by rank, and provided a schedule of exciting activities all across the camp. And new this year will be the stationing of Magness staff at individual locations, who have been specifically trained to teach the Scouts using specialized knowledge and extended class time. Each Den will go through rank specific activities, ensuring all campers will be suitably challenged and engaged throughout their time at Magness. In the middle of Day 3 there will also be a camp-wide festival around the lake where the Cubbies will test their recently learned skills on a dozen different games and challenges, all to be capped off with the grand finale of a closing show. Further details of the rotations, color groups, and exact times will be found in a parents guide handed out at check-in. Please note: all Scouts must be accompanied by an adult. Magness Adventure Camp Outpost Program All activities at MAC are designed to fit the needs of the many different sizes and ages of Cub Scouts found through the program. Magness staff is trained to help support all levels of skill and ability, and will work to make each family s experience memorable and meaningful. With those goals in mind, Magness has arranged a Webelos specific overnight campout, to prepare the Scouts for the years of outdoor adventures the Boy Scouts offer ahead. At the end of rotations on Day 2, the Scouts will hike out to our Second Mesa campsite where they pitch their own tents (all the gear is driven out by staff earlier in the day), have access to their own activities, and feast on a homemade pizza dinner, which they prepared themselves earlier in the day. Complete with a host of outdoor activities and a flag ceremony, this overnight campout can leave your Scout excited for what the future holds in the program.
CHECKING IN AT MAGNESS ADVENTURE CAMP! Check-In will take place from 1:30 PM to 3:15 P.M., with arrival time will based on your assigned shelter. Lizard Head: 1:30-2:00 Lost Creek: 2:00-2:30 Eagle s Nest: 2:30-3:00 It will be helpful to you and us if the entire pack checks in together. Please do not arrive before 1:30 P.M., as check in will not begin until 1:30 and you will not be able to drive beyond the bathrooms at Headquarters. If you are delayed or must arrive after 3:00 P.M., you will need to complete check-in at the Main Office. When you arrive at Magness, you will be checked in by the staff in the parking lot near Headquarters and directed to your assigned shelter. Be Prepared by knowing your pack number! Please have your Medical Forms and Registration/Payment information available! FYI: At the peak of Check-In, there may be a minute wait, though we work hard to reduce this. While at Check-In you will receive a Shelter Assignment, Participant Packet and other pertinent information including a schedule and list of activities. We will also collect your Medical Forms and verify that there isn t a balance due on your account. Remember, every individual staying overnight is required to turn in a Medical Form. If you didn t bring a completed medical form, you will have to complete one before heading to your shelter or beginning activities. Any balances due must be paid at Check-In. Please verify any special dietary or other needs when you check-in! Medications: Any person under 18 without a parent or legal guardian at camp must turn in medications (both prescriptions and over-the-counter medications) to the Medic with their Medical Form. The Medic will fill out a Medication Administration form for the participant, and administer the Medication from the Medical Lodge based on the medication schedule indicated. Note: If you have a preference regarding which shelter you will be staying at, please notate it on your online registration. Although we cannot guarantee that you will get the shelter you requested, we will do our best to serve your needs. We always assign the same shelter for everyone in the same pack.
Shelter Directors: Each shelter has a permanent Shelter Director. They will be able to answer any questions you may have, and assist you with anything you need to make your stay at Magness Adventure Camp a fantastic one. During your stay, your Shelter Director will pass along information, dictate the policies of camp, and assist in assigning your Scouts to a World Explorer Den. Parking and Vehicles: At your shelter, you will be directed into a parking space and receive further information from the staff and your Shelter Director. While at Magness, your vehicle must remain parked unless you are leaving camp. It is expected that all transportation around camp be done on foot. If you need assisted transportation around camp, please let your Shelter Director know, and they will communicate with the Camp Director. CHECKING OUT At the end of your stay at Magness Adventure Camp, please be sure to check out at the Main Office in the Magness Headquarters Building. Upon Checking Out you will receive: A Camp Evaluation Survey Please complete this survey and let us know how we did and what you liked most/least The 2016 World Adventurer Badge Any medications you checked in with the Magness Medic Checkout is also the perfect time to check the Lost-And-Found for any items you may have misplaced while at Magness. If a valuable item such as a watch or wallet is discovered missing after you get home, call the Magness Adventure Camp Headquarters at to see if it has been turned in. All unclaimed items are donated to charity after September 1. Please note: Colorado State Law requires that, as a child care facility, we keep a copy of your medical form for several years. The forms are kept in a secure manner and eventually shredded, but you will not be able to have your medical form returned to you.
