2 The CCSD s ParentLink brochure is an extremely useful resource for students and parents. You may want to download and save the brochure to your desktop for easy reference. 2

3 Some web addresses of the CCSD website use www in the address. Most, however, do not use it. Typing www in front of the web address will frequently result in an error message from your browser. The best approach is to never use www in the web address because leaving it out of the address will always allow you to successfully access the webpage. 3

4 YOU DO NOT NEED a separate login ID and password from each school your children attend. ParentLink is designed so that you can access information for all of your children enrolled in the CCSD by using a single login ID and password. It does not matter from which school you obtained your login ID and password. For example, if you have one child enrolled in elementary school and another in middle school, you can view information for both with the login ID and password you obtained from your child's elementary school. Once you've logged in, just click on the name of the child for which you want to view information. 4

5 Once you've logged in, be sure to enter an address for your account. That way, if you forget your user ID or password, it can be ed to you from the link on the parentlink.ccsd.net login page. Entering an address also allow you to receive grade update notifications, messages from your school, and other ParentLink communications. 5

6 You can easily access ParentLink by telephone rather than an internet connection. The CCSD ParentLink brochure available at contains information regarding how to access ParentLink by phone, as well as a list of frequently accessed phone options. 6

7 If you are using a computer-based program (such as Outlook or Outlook Express), you can a teacher simply by clicking on his or her name. However, if you are using a web-based service such as Yahoo, MSN, gmail, etc., simply right-click on the teacher's name, choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu, and then copy and paste the teacher's address into your address book or program. 7

8 When you click on the envelope icon on a teacher s my.ccsd.net home page, a window containing a form appears. Fill out the form and type in your message. When you are done, click the Send button. This method allows you to send an message to a teacher using any web-based service, either from your computer or any internet-enabled device. 8

9 Another way of accessing teachers my.ccsd.net websites is to navigate to it from our school s website. To do this, go to our school s website at Click on Staff near the top of the homepage. Find the teacher you want to and click on the my.ccsd.net/{teacher name} link under his or her name. Once you have reached the teacher s website, click on the envelope icon directly to the right of the teacher s name on his or her home page. 9

10 Although quarterly Progress Reports and Semester Report Cards are posted for you convenience, your child will still bring home a paper copy of Progress Reports, as well as Quarterly and Semester Report Cards on the dates listed in his or her planner. The grades shown on Progress Reports and Report Cards may be different than those shown in the list of your child s classes. The official grades are the ones listed on your child s Progress Reports and Report Cards. If you believe there is an error on your child s Progress Report or Report Card, contact the school s Registrar to verify the grades. 10

11 Attendance is reported for each class period during the school day. This means that if your child is absent for the entire school day, there will be six absences listed for that day. Since absences are counted by period and are cumulative, the total number of absences will almost always be much higher than you expect to see. For example, if your child is absent for two days, you might expect to see two absences reported. Instead, you will see 12, one for each period missed. You can make better sense of the absence report by comparing the dates and periods rather than just the total number. 11

12 Having at least one correct phone number on file at your child s school is essential to his or her wellbeing. If there is an emergency at school, or if your child becomes sick or injured, it is imperative that school personnel be able to contact you quickly at a working phone number. You may also designate adults school personnel can contact in an emergency. This is especially important now that cell phone use is prohibited in cars. School personnel may be trying to contact you but be unable to do so simply because you are driving and your cell phone is turned off. Contact the Registrar at your child s school for more information about adding phone numbers and emergency contacts. 12

13 Your child s school actually keeps two separate addresses on file. One is your Residence address, the other is your Mailing address. Mail sent from your child s school is almost always sent to the Mailing address. This is not a problem for most parents because the Residence address is almost always the same as the Mailing address. If you think that you may not be receiving mail properly from your child s school, call that school s Registrar to verify that the Mailing address is correct. 13

14 ParentLink will never be real time. Teachers must collect assignments, grade them, enter grades in their grading software, and upload the grades to ParentLink. There will always be a reasonable delay between the due date of assignments and their posting in ParentLink. However, if you believe grades for a class are not being posted in a timely manner, please contact an administrator at your child s school. ParentLink is best used in conjunction with your child s Daily Planner. Doing so allows you to monitor your child s assignments on daily basis and track his or her grades for those assignments as they become available in ParentLink. Checking assignments and homework daily in your child s Daily Planner and then monitoring grades for those assignments in ParentLink also helps keep your child accountable to you. 14

15 When reviewing assignments in ParentLink with your child, you may often hear your child say, I turned that in already. A good response involves praising your child for completing and turning in the assignment, followed by ing his or her teacher for verification. Once you ve established with your child that you are following-up in this manner, he or she is less likely to automatically say I turned that in already unless it is a true statement. Remember, it is normal for children in middle school to engage in manipulation and/or deception as ways to avoid negative consequences. Reducing the possibilities for manipulation and deception clears the way for a more productive conversation about difficulties your child may be experiencing in his or her classes. Remember too that, although ParentLink is often used for spotting areas of concern, it can also provide positive feedback regarding your child s academic progress. When your child is making good academic progress, ParentLink can provide information you can use to praise and reward your child. 15
