3 CORE SKILLS Be able to create, revise, print, manipulate, and store word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and desktop publishing applications. Be provided with the knowledge of computers and their usage for both business and personal use using word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and basic desktop publishing applications. Apply critical thinking skills to complete various computer applications and integrate software applications. Demonstrate the ability to research, analyze and synthesize information independently or in groups to solve problems. COURSE DESCRIPTION Practical Computer Applications Periods 5 -- ½ Year Credits 2.5 Grade 9-12 Practical Computer Applications is a course that integrates the necessary skills for successful entry into the world of information processing. Students will use the touch keyboarding method while learning word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Students will be able to create, revise, manipulate and print various projects utilizing correct formatting and grammar. Students will be able to integrate these software applications. What functions are commonly used in Excel? What professions business and otherwise benefit from using Excel? How do you determine what type of chart to use for various types of information? How can charts and graphs be used to efficiently display data for school or business use? New 8/2011 Unit Summary: This unit is designed for students to become proficient at developing and manipulating spreadsheets. Students will be able to create, edit and format various spreadsheets. Students will also have the ability to enter formulas, insert charts, clipart, and other items as needed. Spreadsheets serve many personal/professional purposes and can be formatted depending on the need. Enduring Understanding(s): The ability to plan, organize, and create a spreadsheet. Arrange and format text and numbers in a spreadsheet. Assess spreadsheet data to determine best formula to calculate desired information. Collect data and sort/filter to display appropriately. Increase productivity by using features such as Auto Fill & various functions. Create various types of graphs and charts to illustrate information contained in a spreadsheet.
