Exchange information using words, phrases, and short sentences practiced in class on familiar topics or on topics studied in other content areas. Copy/write words, phrases, or simple guided texts on familiar topics. Target Audience, Setting, Time Frame and Final Underlying Goal This lesson has been designed for seventh graders in a class of approximately twenty students. The final goal of the lesson is for the students to speak in the target language with understanding and confidence using the words based on the lesson. This unit should most likely take approximately seven to eight classes of 45 minutes to accomplish in a regular education class. Understanding (s)/goals Students will understand the various positions and actions which baseball players are a part of throughout a game. They will be comfortable to describe the field and the player s uniform and equipment. The students will also understand some of the expressions that announcers might use during the game. All of this will be accomplished in the target *For this lesson, I will use French; however, the target language may vary. Essential Question(s): to be answered in the target What are the actions ballplayers perform? (verbs in present tense) What are the names of the positions of the players? Which of the Phillies plays which position? Describe the ball field. Describe the baseball player s uniform as well as the equipment he uses. What might an announcer say during a game? Student objectives (outcomes): (These will all be in the target language) Students will be able to: Label drawing of the Citizen Bank Park ball field using the vocabulary. Create action sentences using real names of Phillies players. Draw and describe a baseball uniform and equipment. Write a sample of what an announcer might say during a baseball game. (written practice) Act out what an announcer might say during a baseball game. (oral practice) Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): The students will create a baseball Phillies book which includes: A diagram of Citizen s Bank Park field labeled in the target Several sentences describing what the players do as they play using baseball action verbs. A drawing or a picture of a Phillies player and his equipment labeled in the target A sample writing of what an announcer might say in the target Assessment will be based on the performance task rubric* Other Evidence: (all in target language) To assess prior knowledge, teacher to have students review the Phillies schedule in the target language and also review numbers by asking what number each player is. Quiz matching vocabulary, translation and fill in the blanks Match the Phillies player with his position. Question and answer between students to practice spoken Other Evidence will help learning by: Boosting memory of various words in target

Building the student s understandings of the target language by using authentic and current examples. Allowing the students to recognize the spoken Reinforcing prior knowledge. Learning Activities: Acting out the verbs Matching players to positions Reading in the target language Identifying the uniform using actual items. Watching a film clip of a player and announcing what you saw in target Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activities by lesson: (See individual lessons for more detail and worksheets) Prior knowledge of numbers and days/dates to be accessed through review of player s numbers as well as review of Phillies upcoming schedule. Teacher to introduce vocabulary of baseball to class using visuals which are from the Philadelphia Inquirer as well as the Phillies Website and other sources. Teacher to have students repeat and match the words with the visuals. (PowerPoint of photos works well here) Students to draw the Citizen s Bank Park with labels in target language of player s positions as well as other pertinent vocabulary. (ex: le premier but/first base)(this will be part of their Phillies book) Teacher to show visuals of specific players and students to say their name and what position they play. Teacher to introduce baseball verbs and students to act out the actions the verbs portray. Students to create sentences using the verbs and photos of Phillies players in target (part of their Phillies book) Teacher to introduce uniform vocabulary having on hand a complete uniform including gloves, bats, etc. (Phillies of course). Students to play a matching game with vocabulary and the uniform. Students to play a relay race whereas students will retrieve specific items and dress one student up in the uniform. Students will draw their own Phillies uniform and label it in target (extension: add colors in target language and don t forget green for the Phanatic) Teacher will introduce what an announcer might say in target Teacher to show a video clip and students to decide what might be said during this video clip. (Video clip from Phillies.com) Students to write their own example of what an announcer might say. (part of Phillies book) Students to practice their announcing in the target language for other students. Classmates to listen and translate what their peers announced. Students to take a matching, multiple choice quiz on vocabulary.
