Currently she is a Special Advisor to the Board of Canada s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), following a period as NWMO s founding President. Ms. Dowdeswell served as Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program and Undersecretary General of the United Nations, Assistant Deputy Minister of Environment Canada, responsible for the National Weather and Atmospheric Agency and led a number of public inquiries, including into Canada s unemployment benefits program and federal water policy. Her early career included terms as Deputy Minister of Culture and Youth for the Province of Saskatchewan, educational consultant, university lecturer and high-school teacher. Ms. Dowdeswell is also a visiting professor in genomics and global health at the University of Toronto, was appointed a Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation mentor, is a Corporate Director, and contributes in an advisory capacity to a number of not-for-profit organizations. Ms. Dowdeswell holds a Master of Science degree in behavioural sciences from Utah State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics, a teaching certificate from the University of Saskatchewan and, nine honorary degrees.

2 Tom Brzustowski RBC Financial Group Professor in the Commercialization of Innovation, University of Ottawa Tom Brzustowski is RBC Professor for the Commercialization of Innovation in the School of Management at the University of Ottawa and Chair of the Board at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. He is also the former President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada ( ). A professional engineer, Dr. Brzustowski graduated with a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1958, and a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton in Dr. Brzustowski was a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo from 1962 to He also served as Chair of Mechanical Engineering, ( ) Vice-President, Academic of the University ( ) and Deputy Minister in the Government of Ontario ( ). Dr. Brzustowski holds honorary doctorates from a number of Canadian universities, and is a recipient of the Engineering Alumni Medal from the University of Toronto and the Gold Medal of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and of the Royal Society of Canada. David Dolphin CEO, BC Innovation Council, Vancouver, BC David Dolphin is currently CEO of the British Columbia Innovation Council, Killam Research Professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and is recognised as one of the founders of modern porphyrin chemistry. Dr. Dolphin earned his B.Sc. in 1962 and his Ph.D. in 1965 at the University of Nottingham. In 1966 he joined the Chemistry Department of Harvard University and in 1974, left to join the faculty of science at the University of British Columbia. Since 1985 he has held the positions of Associate Dean of Science, Acting Dean of Science and Acting Vice-President of Research. Since 1987 he has served as the Vice-President, Technology Development at the Vancouver-based biotech company QLT, and since 1992 has held the NSERC QLT Inc. Industrial Research Chair in Photodynamic Technologies. Dr. Dolphin was elected to Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada in 2001 and to Fellowship in the Royal Society (London) in He received a Heroes of Chemistry award from the American Chemical Society in In the spring of 2006 Dr. Dolphin was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. Dr. Dolphin is also the current winner of the NSERC Herzberg Medal. Don Drummond Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, TD Bank Financial Group, Toronto, ON Don Drummond is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of TD Bank Financial Group. He is responsible for overseeing analysis and forecasts for the Canadian and U.S. economies and financial markets. Mr. Drummond also writes on a wide range of public policy issues and is frequently called upon by the media to comment on economic and policy developments. Don Drummond was born in Victoria, BC, where he graduated from the University of Victoria. He subsequently received his M.A. in Economics from Queen's University. Upon completing his studies at Queen's, Mr. Drummond joined the federal Department of Finance where he held a series of progressively more senior positions in the areas of economic analysis and forecast-

3 ing, fiscal policy and tax policy. His last three positions were, Assistant Deputy Minister of Fiscal Policy & Economic Analysis, Assistant Deputy Minister of Tax Policy & Legislation and most recently, Associate Deputy Minister. As ADM of Finance, Mr. Drummond was responsible for economic analysis, fiscal policy, tax policy, social policy and federal-provincial relations and coordinating the planning of the annual federal budgets. Jean Gray Professor of Medicine (Emeritus), Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS Jean Gray is currently Professor Emeritus - Medical Education, Medicine, and Pharmacology at Dalhousie University. Dr. Gray graduated from the University of Alberta in Chemistry (1963) and Medicine (1967). She joined the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie and was the founding Head of the Division of General Medicine and a member of the founding Board of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Gray has served as President of the Canadian Society of Clinical Pharmacology; the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation; the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics; the Canadian Association of Medical Education; the Canadian Institute of Academic Medicine; and as Chair of the Standing Committees of both Postgraduate and Continuing Medical Education of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges. At present, Dr. Gray serves on several advisory and editorial boards. Dr. Gray belongs to the Fellowship on the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Order of Canada. She also has two honorary doctorates. Peter Grütter Professor of Physics, McGill University, Montreal, QC Peter Grutter is the Scientific Director of the NSERC NanoInnovation Platform and, Fellow and Director of the Nanoelectronics and Photonics program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR). Professor Grutter received his PhD from the University in Basel (1989) in the field of Magnetic Force Microscopy. After stays at the IBM Almaden Research Center and at the IBM Zurich Research Labs he joined the Physics Department at McGill University in His group works on developing tools, mainly scanning probe microscopy-based, and applying them to problems in nanoscience, in particular nanoelectronics. Dr. Grutter has received a number of awards including, the NSERC E.W.R. Steacie award (2001), CIAR Young Explorer Prize ( Top 20 under 40 in Canada in 2002), the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Physics from the Royal Society (2005) of Canada and, the Carrie Derick Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision and Teaching at McGill (2005). Dr. Grutter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and was appointed a James McGill Professor by McGill University in 2006.

4 Richard Hawkins Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, University of Calgary Richard Hawkins is currently Professor and Canada Research Chair in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy at the University of Calgary, Senior Fellow at the Center for Innovation Studies and Senior Associate Scientist with the Innovation Policy Group at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research. M. Hawkins is a political economist specialising in information and communication technology policy issues. He holds BA and MA degrees from Simon Fraser University, and a DPhil from the University of Sussex (UK). M. Hawkins was Leader of the Network Economy Programme at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and Senior Consultant to the TNO Society, Technology and Innovation programme. He was also a Senior Fellow and Lecturer at SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research, at the University of Sussex. In addition to academic work, M. Hawkins has extensive international experience as a policy consultant and advisor. Clients have included the European Commission, the OECD, the World Bank, the UK Department of Trade and Industry, and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. Susan A. McDaniel Professor of Sociology, University of Windsor Susan McDaniel is Professor of Sociology at the University of Windsor where she does research in the areas of demography, social policy, science, technology and innovation and, social statistics. She is also a frequent advisor to governments in Canada, the UK and the EU on many of these matters. Prior to 2004, Dr. McDaniel was Professor of Sociology at the University of Alberta where she was awarded the title of University Professor. She was also on faculty at the University of Waterloo, Editor of the journals Current Sociology and The Canadian Journal of Sociology, Chair of the Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for nine years, Chair of the Advisory Committee on Demographic Data and Statistics, appointee to the National Statistics Council, President of both the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association and the Canadian Population Society as well as Vice-President Publications of the International Sociological Association. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the recipient of awards including the University Cup (2002) and the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Research Excellence (1999). She is also the author of seven books and research monographs and over 170 research articles. Charles W. Wessner Director, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, The National Academies, Washington, DC Charles Wessner directs a Program on Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at The National Academies. He is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert on public-private partnerships, early stage financing for new firms, and the special needs and benefits of high technology industry. He frequently testifies to the U.S. Congress and major national commissions, acts as an advisor to agencies of the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government, and has served as an advisor to the 30-nation OECD Committee on Science and Technology Policy, as well as a number of governments in Europe, Asia and the Americas. He was recently recognised as a National Academies Scholar.

5 At the Academy, his current portfolio of work includes a major research program focused on Measuring and Sustaining the New Economy and a groundbreaking review of the nation s largest program of innovation awards, the SBIR R&D program, at the five agencies responsible for 96% of SBIR's $2.2 billion annual expenditures. He is also directing an assessment of national innovation policies around the world entitled Comparative Innovation Policies: Best Practice for the 21st century. This third study stems directly from the recently completedreview, under the direction of Intel's Gordon Moore, of Private Public Partnerships in the United States, which reviewed consortia, S&T parks and innovation awards. Dr. Wessner teaches at George Washington University's Elliot School, is a Research Fellow at Indiana University and holds an appointment at the Max Planck Institute in Jena, Germany. Joseph D. Wright Retired President and CEO, Pulp & Paper Research Institute (PAPRICAN), Montreal, QC Joseph Wright served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada (Paprican) from May 1994 until April Prior to his appointment at Paprican, Dr. Wright was Vice-President and Centre Manager for the Xerox Research Centre of Canada and Professor of Chemical Engineering at McMaster University. Dr. Wright has been Chair of the Board of the Canadian Network of Pulp and Paper Researchers, Chair of the Computing and Systems Technology Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and founding Co-Chair of the Systems and Control Division of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers. He has also been Chairman of PRECARN and the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems as well as Vice-Chair of the Canadian National Advisory Board on Science and Technology. Dr. Wright holds a Ph.D. in control/chemical engineering from Cambridge University and a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta where he was awarded the Professional Engineers of Alberta Gold Medal in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Wright was recognized by an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from McMaster University (2001). He is a Fellow and past President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering as well as a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers and, the Chemical Institute of Canada.
