4 What is Full-Frame Technology? Full-Frame Positive and Negative Grids: Prevents electrical shorts from exposed wire. Provides better current transfers from all sides of the plate for greater starting power. Increases grids tensile strengths resisting plate growth to safeguard against performance loss over time. Reinforced structure better withstands severe service or deep cycling demands. Grid Design: Bosch grids come with more top frame wire connections. More top frame connections not only deliver more power directly through the battery, but also significantly increase the tensile strength of the grid. 8 How to choose the correct battery: How to select the correct battery When selecting a marine battery, you need to calculate the power requirements for engine starting, as well as the amount of your on board electrical accessories will use. For light moderate duty, low amp draw requirement, choose from the Bosch HCM or BDP dual purpose battery ranges, which are specially designed to handle both starting and light cycling. For heavy duty cycling, choose from the Bosch deep cycle DCM or AGM battery ranges. They provide enough cranking amperage to start your engine and the most reserve power to keep your accessories running longer. You may find you need more than one battery to satisfy your boat power requirements. In this instance, you may utilise one battery as an engine starter, and another as a deep cycle to maintain your equipment. To ensure you have selected the correct batteries contact your local Auto Electrician or Bosch battery stockist. Dual Purpose Starting / Deep Cycle applications. Dual purpose batteries are ideal for applications that require both starting and light cycling, they deliver powerful cranking amperage for easy starting, and low amp draw for reliable auxiliary power. Bosch High Cycle Marine batteries (HCM) and Bosch BDP ranges are carefully engineered to provide the optimum balance between starting and cycling duties. They are also thoroughly insulated to protect against the high frequency, vibration created by rough sea conditions. Deep Cycle applications A deep cycle battery delivers a long, slow discharge of fewer amps, for several minutes or hours, such as running marine accessory loads e.g. depth finders, coolers, lights etc. BOSCH deep cycle batteries are specially engineered with heavier, thicker plates with fibreglass reinforcement, special power producing active material and heavy duty separators. With those features, the battery can withstand the potentially damaging effects of continual deep discharge and recharging. Helpful Tips Maintenance Sulphation is a major cause of battery failure in marine applications and is often created by very low voltage. Maintaining battery voltage is a must to ensure a safe day out on the water, so it pays to check your battery voltage prior to departure. Keep it clean Ensure the battery posts and terminals are clean and secure before every trip. The marine environment places additional demands on all equipment and basic maintenance can ensure these demands are adequately managed. A sulphated battery Bosch Batteries Marine Page 8

9 Battery Recharging Procedure Battery charging indicators Charging the battery is required when the: Storage period is more than 6 months without charging. Colour of state of charge (SOC) indicator turns black. Battery operating current voltage (OCV) is less that 12.4V. Steps prior to charging Wear protective glasses whilst handling the battery. Do not carry out charging near fire or spark. Do not charge damaged or frozen batteries. Boost charge is not recommended. If the battery has accessible scew-in plugs, check the electrolyte level in each cell and top up with distilled water if necessary. Don t switch on the charger until battery has been connected. Don t switch off the charger until charging is complete. Position the batteries so that there is a space of at least 20mm between them. Only use batteries with the same capacity and state of charge in the same circuit. This prevents the slightly discharged batteries from being overcharged when connected to the same circuit as a battery that needs a longer time to recharge. Batteries must always be connected in series, that is, the positive pole of a battery should be connected to the negative pole of the neighbouring battery, thus the positive pole of the first battery and the negative pole of the last battery will always be open. All of the batteries for recharging should have their density and/or open voltage checked, so the batteries could be grouped (based on state of charge) for the purpose of placing them in the right circuit for the recharging process. Warnining: Never connect the positive pole to the negative pole of the same battery or in the same series, as this will cause a short circuit. Check that the connections (terminals) make good contact by twisting them slightly while pressing them onto the pole. WARNING CARE ADVISED! Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep sparks, flames and cigarettes away from batteries at all times. Never lean over battery when jump starting or performing other maintenance. Hazardous according to the Criteria of WorkSafe Australia. Lead-acid batteries generate explosive gases. No Smoking - keep sparks and flames away from battery terminals. When charging or using battery in an enclosed space provide ventilation. These batteries contain sulphuric acid. If acid contacts eyes, skin or clothing flush immediately with large amounts of water. In case of eye contact with acid see physician immediately. In case of sparks, do not wipe the battery with dried textile. Store and transport in upright position. Waste information: Battery contains lead [Pb]. Do not dispose of to general waste. Some components of the battery and packaging are recyclable. Bosch Batteries Marine Page 9

10 Battery Recharging Procedure continued Recharging with a constant current When recharging the battery with constant current, the voltage will increase slowly during the recharging. Towards the end, the voltage increases rapidly and the process should be stopped at the voltage value limit. Warning: The battery temperature must not exceed 50 degrees Celsius during the recharging process Note: Always charge the battery according to the amount of charge needed. Prolonged charging times, especially with a constant current, could cause the battery to become overcharged, causing an unnecessary loss of water in the process. Avoid quick charges that are done without controlling the temperature, current or time. Some batteries below 12.1V can be hard to recharge due to the long time elapsed since the last recharge. It is very difficult to recover its original performance. Recharging with a constant voltage When using this charging method, the initial current applied to the battery should be limited to 25A and the voltage to 14.4V. The battery charging time will vary according to the state of charge, as shown by the table below: Battery voltage when empty (volts) Recharging time (hours) to to to to to to to to 24 Deeply discharged batteries 24 to 30 Warning: the battery temperature must not exceed 50 degrees Celsius during the recharging process. Actions during and after recharging Electrolyte temperatures The electrolyte temperature, hence the battery container temperature must not exceed 50 degrees Celsius. The recharging process should be stopped if this temperature is exceeded. The process may be resumed once all batteries in the recharging circuit reach 45 degrees Celsius or less. Recharging time We recommend waiting approximately 20 minutes to allow gases to dissipate before removing the leads from the batteries, as some chargers remain in a charged state and can generate sparks. Replace the vent caps and gas tubes if they were removed. Wash the battery using warm water and dry it. Bosch Batteries Marine Page 10

11 Storage and Warranty Off-season storage Marine batteries that are not in use must be cared for as follows to extend the battery life and reliability: Charge up the battery and if it is necessary, leave the battery in the vessel and disconnect the negative terminal. Otherwise, remove the battery and store in a cool place. Check the OCV of the battery every two months. If the OCV is below 12.4V, recharge the battery. Warranty All Bosch batteries are backed by a Bosch warranty against defects. Batteries are warranted for the following periods: Marine 12 months (starting the engine); 6 months (cycling the battery) Full details of the Bosch battery warranty, including full terms and conditions, are included in the warranty card that is supplied with every Bosch battery.
