2 Peace be to you We are glad you re with us this morning. As we gather for worship you may have some questions on your mind like how should I be feeling? or where should I sit? Have no fear because some of us have been here a long time and some are brand new. We gather this morning as we are. Maybe you had a sleepless night or a long week. No matter what please know that YOU are welcome here. You can be you but our Hope at New Hope is that you come away refreshed, uplifted and touched by God in some way. Thanks for being here. As we gather We are part of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are Saint and Sinner, Christian, we are children of God, we are husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, grandparents and so much more. The lens that we look through the scriptures with is called Lutheran. There s much more to it that that but we trust, through the Holy Spirit, in the big word that starts with G, Grace! JESUS LOVES YOU! We love to pray. In fact one of the ways we pray is through a prayer station that has candles and a place to write your prayers if you choose. Its located on the right side wall next to the door that goes outside. Simply take a candle and light it from another candle that s lit, if there are no candles lit there are matches available. Write down your prayer or person to pray for and that will be included during the prayers of intercession in worship. Restrooms are located throughout the building. The first is the second door on your right as you enter through the main doors, this is also the location of a baby changing station and is unisex. The other two are located in the long hallway, just across from the main doors. Questions about children: Children are always welcome in worship. However for your convenience there is a cry room located in the long hallway, first door on your left. If your child needs to be taken out for a few moments please feel free, you won t disturb worship. We simply ask you bring your child back into worship as soon as you feel is it appropriate. We want nothing more than for your child, and you, to have a positive and meaningful experience while at New Hope. Kallistos Ware writes It is not the task of Christianity to provide easy answers to every question, but to make us progressively aware of a mystery. God is not so much the object of our knowledge as the cause of our wonder. Gather-Word-Meal-Send: Join with us in the mystery 2

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, whose name is majestic in all the earth, who rescues and heals in every time of trouble, who does all things well. C. Amen. P. Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life. Silence is kept for reflection. P. Steadfast and saving God, have mercy on us. We confess to you all the ways we turn from you and harm one another. In your compassion, forgive our sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of gentleness and peacemaking, the sheaves of wisdom and justice; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P. In the name of Jesus, the Son of God, receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Your transgressions are forgiven; God s love is healing balm for your wounds. 7 PRAYER OF THE DAY P. The Lord be with you. C. And also with you. P. Let us pray, C. Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) HOLY BAPTISM Maxxwell and Chase Adams PRESENTATION P. God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word, God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. I present Maxxwell and Chase for baptism. Response: I do. P. Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Maxxwell and Chase baptized into Christ? Response: I do. P. As you bring Maxxwell and Chase to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with them among God's faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, (continued on next page) 7

8 place in their hands the holy scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your children grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: I do. P. People of God, do you promise to support Maxxwell and Chase and pray for them in their new life in Christ? C. We do. The assembly stands. PROFESSION OF FAITH P. I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. P. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Response: I renounce them. P. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Response: I renounce them. P. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: I renounce them. Please stand P. Do you believe in God the Father? C. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, 8

9 born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. P. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT P. The Lord be with you. C. And also with you. P. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C. It is right to give our thanks and praise. P. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. C. Amen. 9

We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Maxxwell and Chase with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. C. Amen. P. Maxxwell and Chase, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. C. Amen. WELCOME P. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Let us welcome the newly baptized. C. 11 FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31:31-34 WORD We Hear God s Story R. A reading from Jeremiah, the 31st chapter. 31 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the LORD, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. 13 SECOND READING: Romans 3:19-28 R. A reading from Romans, the 3rd chapter. 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. R. The word of the Lord. C. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 19 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P. Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. We praise you for the grace shown to your people in every age: the promise to Israel, the rescue from Egypt, the gift of the promised land, the words of the prophets; and, at this end of all the ages, the gift of your Son, who proclaimed the good news in word and deed and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. C. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Therefore, O God, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered for us. Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 20

We believe the real presence of Christ is in this meal. All baptized persons are welcome to commune. All individuals are encouraged to come forward for a blessing. If you have an allergy to wheat, we have gluten free bread and wine. Please simply tell the Pastor gluten free and he will share the appropriate elements. If you have a question about communion please share it with our pastor or a council member. Instructions: The sacrament of Holy Communion will be distributed by intinction. Upon receiving the bread, move to the chalice and dip the bread in the consecrated wine. When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. By your gifts of word and holy meal, strengthen us to take up the cross as we go about our callings in this world, following after Jesus Christ, our servant Lord.
