1 TERM 3 WK 1 07/21 WK2 07/27 WK3 08/03 WK4 08/10 NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 7 CONTENT SOURCES OF ENERGY Renewable and non-renewable sources of energy energy is needed to make everything work, move or live a source of energy has energy stored waiting to be used, or energy that is needed to make something happen -- non-renewable sources of energy cannot be replenished once used, such as fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear fuels (such as uranium) [Links to Planet Earth and Beyond Grade 7 term 4] -- renewable sources of energy are continually replenished, such as hydro power, wind, sunlight, biofuel (wood) POTENTIAL AND KINETIC ENERGY Potential energy potential energy is energy that is stored in a system, such as in a stretched rubber band, a weight balanced on the edge of a table, a cell (battery), fuel there is also potential energy in food [all energy is measured in a unit called the joule (J)]. The energy content in foods is usually labelled on food packaging [Note: definition and calculation of joules is NOT required] SKILLS BIBLICAL INTEGRATION & REFERENCE God is our source of energy. His Holy spirit abides in us and gives us power. He has given us a spirit of power, love and a sound mind (1 Tim 2:17) It is renewable. It can be replaced. Continually be filled with the Spirit. God has given us His Spirit to live in us. We have the potential to live lives that honour Him. The Holy Spirit empowers us. He is the potential in us and once He moves in us it is as if His Kinetic energy then fowls though us. Kinetic energy kinetic energy is the energy that a body has when it is moving, such as when a rubber band snaps back, a weight falls off a table, wind blows, water falls, a vehicle moves, current flows through a circuit (electricity)

2 WK5 08/17 WK6 08/24 WK7 08/31 Potential and kinetic energy in systems potential and kinetic energy are involved in -- mechanical systems -- thermal (heating) systems -- electrical systems -- biological systems [a system is a set of parts working together] Law of conservation of energy energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can be converted from one form to another energy can be transferred in a system when different parts of the system interact with one another and cause changes [Approach should be to provide learners with examples rather than a definition] energy can also be transferred from one system to another such as from an electrical system to a mechanical system in a motor HEAT TRANSFER Heating as a transfer of energy heating is a process in which energy is transferred from a hotter body to cooler body the energy transfer continues until both bodies are at the same temperature heat is transferred in three ways by: -- conduction -- convection -- radiation Conduction is the transfer of heat between solid objects that are in direct God is patient: Nothing is wasted with God. Just as energy cannot be destroyed so God s power, the Holy Spirit, is transferred to us, directly and indirectly. (Convection and Radiation)

These are generally poor conductors of heat and dark surfaces (such as black) absorb heat energy radiation heats up dark surfaces more quickly (absorb heat) than it heats up shiny surfaces (reflect heat) Convection is the transfer of heat from one place to another by the movement of liquid or gas particles -- air and water expand when heated and the particles move upwards. When cooled they move down again. This is called a convection current Radiation radiation is the transfer of heat and does not require physical contact or movement of particles the heat from the Sun travels mainly by radiation across empty Good conductors: As Christians we should be good conductors of God s nature in our society. Good insulators: An insulator is a protector. It prevents harm. God protects us and insulates us in various situations. Brainstorm the kinds of things that God does to protect us. He will hide us in the shelter of his wings and his feathers will cover us. Story if the mother hen who protected her chicks against the fire. She was burnt but the chicks we saved. The types of heat transfer serve to transfer energy. It is a process of control when energy transfer is done correctly. God teaches us self-control and patience through His Holy Spirit living in us.

Check the learner s knowledge and that they can: distinguish between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and give examples of each compare potential and kinetic energy describe the input energy and trace and record the transfer and changes of energy through various energy transfer systems describe and demonstrate the difference between conduction, convection and radiation show how to use insulating materials to minimise heat loss or heat gain identify and describe ways to conserve energy in the home/school/community
