Life to Eagle Seminar Los Angeles Area Council Presented by: Mr. Bobby Joe Frontier District Advancement Chair

Seminar Objectives To review the requirements for Eagle rank To discuss the Eagle Leadership Service Project To review Eagle application process To discuss the Eagle Court of Honor To answer any questions from Scouts & parents To understand time commitment To Avoid Any Surprises!

Eagle Requirements Merit Badges - 21 minimum Leadership Position - 6 month active Active as Life Scout - 6 month minimum Eagle Service Project Demonstrate, live by Scout Spirit Scoutmaster Conference Complete Eagle Board of Review * * All requirements except the BOR must be completed prior to 18th birthday!

Remember! Eagle rank is more than just 21 merit badges & a project! The primary emphasis is Demonstrate LEADERSHIP Skills!

12 Required Merit Badges Environmental Science Family Life Communications Camping First Aid Personal Fitness Citizenship in the Community Citizenship in the Nation Citizenship in the World Personal Management Swimming or Hiking or Cycling Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving

If the requirement says: Warning: Several merit badges require specific, extended periods of time to complete. Meet with your counselor Keep records for three months You must meet with your counselor AT LEAST three months prior to your 18th birthday or you cannot complete the merit badge in time! You cannot keep a record of your budget and spending for three months in only three weeks. To ask anyone to backdate merit badge requirements because of poor planning would violate the principles of the BSA and should invalidate the Eagle rank presented as a result of that action. This would be a terrible example to set for other Scouts.

Updated from Advancement Guide dated For Unit Leaders, who sign Merit Badge Cards. Approval for our Youth to begin to earn a Merit badge OK comes before a badge is earned. Once a registered and approved counselor has passed a Scout on requirements for a merit badge, it cannot be taken away. Nor does unit leadership have the authority to retract approval, or take the badge away.

Leadership Position Scoutmaster assigned or elected Minimum of 6 months (one or more positions) Must do the job - Not just wear the patch Approved positions are: Sr. Patrol Leader Asst. Sr. Patrol Leader Patrol Leader Troop Guide Instructor Den Chief Troop Historian Leave no Trace Trainer Troop Scribe Troop Librarian Troop Quartermaster Jr. Asst. Scoutmaster Chaplain aide Troop Webmaster Troop OA Representative (troop may only have 1 OA rep at a time, must be approved by chapter / lodge) Note: Patrol QM, Asst Patrol Leader, Patrol Scribe do not satisfy requirement

Positions of Responsibility If a unit has established expectations for positions of responsibility, and if, within reason, based on his personal skill set, the Scout meets them, he fulfills the requirement. When a Scout assumes a position, something related to the desired results must happen. It is a disservice to the Scout and to the unit to reward work that has not been done. Holding a position and doing nothing, producing no results, is unacceptable. Some degree of responsibility must be practiced, taken, or accepted. Under the described scenario, if it is left to the Scout to determine what should be done, and he makes a reasonable effort to perform accordingly for the time specified, then he fulfills this requirement. Even if his results are not necessarily what the Scoutmaster, members of a board of review, or others involved may want to see, he may not be held to un established expectations. It is best when a Scout s leaders provide him position descriptions, and then direction, coaching, and support. Where this occurs, and is done well, the young man will likely succeed. When this support, for whatever reason, is unavailable or otherwise not provided or when there are no clearly established expectations then an adult leader or the Scout, or both, should work out the responsibilities to fulfill. See of Advancement policy and Procedure for specific Details

Eagle Leadership Service Project Project Ideas Proposal Approval to Begin Further detailed Plan Fundraising/Permits The Project Coach Working the Project Final Report Completion Approvals

Eagle Leadership Service Project Purpose is to Demonstrate Leadership of Others Must benefit community organization other than Boy Scouts May NOT benefit a commercial business May NOT be a fund raiser Must be planned and carried out by one Scout no joint projects Will take up to 6 months to complete - plan ahead! May begin planning project immediately after passing Life Board of Review (not necessary to earn all 21 merit badges first.)

Sample Eagle Projects Built church sign Landscaped church grounds Repaired church playground Built church janitor closet Repaired & cleaned out storage shed Collected eye glasses for Lions Club Built chuck boxes for Girl Scout troop Repaired church home for aged & sponsored social event for residents Built newspaper re-cycling bins for Wood Elementary School Re-landscaped and fixed up church sign Painted Logos on schools Built bull-pens for Mansfield High School baseball field Built cabinets for Sunday School rooms Repaired, re-roofed, landscaped church gazebo

Preparing the Project Proposal 1. It provides sufficient opportunity to meet the Eagle Scout service project requirement. You must show that planning, development, and leadership will take place; and how the three factors will benefit a religious institution, a school, or your community. 2. It appears to be feasible. You must show the project is realistic for you to complete. 3. Safety issues will be addressed. You must show you have an understanding of what must be done to guard against injury, and what will be done if someone does get hurt. 4. Action steps for further detailed planning are included. You must make a list of the key steps you will take to make sure your plan has enough details to be carried out successfully. 5. You are on the right track with a reasonable chance for a positive experience.

Eagle Service Project Proposal Meet with an adult advisor before doing much planning. The project proposal write up: Must use official BSA Workbook to submit proposal and final report (electronic version OK) Fillable Eagle Scout Service Project Wkbk[1] Download from BSA National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) website) **Location for Download May Be different ** Approvals: Unit Leader Unit Committee Beneficiary District Advancement Committee Must have all for approval signatures on proposal first

Eagle Leadership Service Project Plan Eagle Projects are required to be approved by the Beneficiary, Scoutmaster, Unit Committee Chair and District The District may offer the eagle candidate the services of a Districtcertified eagle coach to assist in the planning of the project if one is not already assigned This approval will be for the proposal as called out in the new Eagle Service Project Book The Detail plans are completed by the scout prior to implementation As projects are planned, changes usually are necessary. If they are major, it is important to confirm they are acceptable to the beneficiary. You should also share major changes with those who approved your proposal, and also with your coach to be sure you still have a chance of passing the board of review.

Eagle Leadership Service Project Plan After completion of the detail planning as required in the eagle service project work book and fund raising as necessary, the project is implemented The scout may use the District Eagle Project Check List (see next chart) as a guide to complete the detail plans Upon completion, the scout must complete the final Report in the project work book The completed workbook is presented to the beneficiary and Unit Leader for completion acceptance.

Eagle Application Process Complete all requirements Write project final report (Make sure that the After Completion questions on Page 4 are answered) Complete Eagle Scout Application Submit Application & Project Final Report to: Troop Committee & Scoutmaster Meet with District Advancement Chair Scouts records verified Eagle Candidate provides reference forms to references for submittal to District Advancement Chair Dear Friend of Scouting Reference Form BJ.doc District Advancement Chair Notifies Scout of Board of Review Schedule Board of Review Approval Council approval of Application National approval of Application Scout notified of approval by District Advancement Chair Conduct Court of Honor
