3 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 3 Dear American Chamber Members Since my appointment as Ambassador to Norway, we have witnessed shifts in international politics, increased international trade and closer communication ties. Indeed, as technology continues to shrink our borders, cooperation among countries has become paramount to our success. The close friendship our two countries share has been underscored and heightened by the dramatic changes we witness on a regular basis. I continue to take pride in the spirit of optimism demonstrated by the United States and Norway in our commitment to freedom and democracy for all nations. Through a legacy of international humanitarian assistance, the generosity and goodwill of the Norwegian people reaches every corner of the globe. The United States remains as ever appreciative of the strength of Norwegian efforts to promote peace and democracy worldwide. Yet equally important are continued trade relations with our global partners. By sustaining economic prosperity and promoting the exchange of ideas and values, international trade contributes to the peace and security of the global community. I commend the members of the American Chamber for their efforts to strengthen Norwegian-American business relations and promote long-term economic prosperity. These innovative partnerships expand consumer choice and improve the competitiveness of the global market. The American Chamber plays a valuable role in the Norwegian business sector by encouraging bilateral cooperation between both parties. Through informative events and a diverse array of services, the American Chamber provides business assistance designed to fit the needs of its American and Norwegian clients. It is the only organization dedicated solely to expanding trade opportunities for both sides. On behalf of the U.S. Embassy, I would like to express my appreciation for the work of the American Chamber. By representing the interests of the American business community with dedication and professionalism, the Chamber s work advances the principles of mutual interdependence, peace, and security through international trade. I encourage the Chamber s members to avail themselves of every opportunity to work with and for the American Chamber in promoting business relations worldwide. I continue to pledge to do my part and where appropriate, assist the Chamber in carrying out their vital work. Sincerely, John Doyle Ong U.S. AMBASSADOR TO NORWAY

5 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 5 Meeting Business Challenges I hope you find this year s American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Yearbook y a valuable resource for contacts throughout the year that help you in your business. I also hope you will spend a few minutes of your time to think about how your increased involvement with AmCham can help you in meeting your business challenges in the future. If you are an American (as I am) or non-norwegian speaking manager running an American company/division in Norway, the Amcham organization should provide a great support for you. It will provide you periodic breaks from the daily grind with Power Lunches, business forums and social events where you will hear prominent English-speaking speakers on important topics that effect Norwegian- American trade relations. AmCham also provides you with an immediate network of companies facing similar challenges in Norway and Europe open and willing to get to know you and perhaps even help you in meeting your challenges. If you are running an American company/division and speak Norwegian, the opportunities for you to become involved in other business organizations are broader and you might be challenging the value of spending time with another organization. To this I would say: take another look at the membership list in the back! Our organization has some of the top local, European, and American/ Global companies on the planet. It is also uniquely focused on Norwegian- American trade which could have an impact on your business. Regardless of your nationality, language skills or company s domicile, AmCham Norway is the leading organization that can help your business with key contacts within the U.S. Embassy, trade partners within the U.S., and local Norwegian-member organizations that see the value of being associated with many of the leading global companies represented in our current membership. As we all know, time is in big demand and making a commitment to becoming an active member of AmCham Norway must return value to you for that sacrifice. I think those of you active in 2004 will agree that our Power Lunches and business forums as well as social events were of first rate quality, informative and ultimately helpful to you and your business. I know that Jason, the AmCham Executive Committee, and Board members are putting great efforts to insure the 2005 s calendar builds on our success and becomes an even more valuable resource for you busy executives fighting daily business challenges. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you at our next event!! John Ustas CHAIRMAN OF THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN NORWAY

9 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 9 Dear Members and Friends of the American Chamber Your organization is enjoying success! Membership levels are at their highest ever, event themes and speakers are first-rate, and the Chamber staff is increasingly equipped to assist your needs. The Chamber s mission of developing Norwegian-American business relations is carried out from our offices on a daily basis. I am happy to regularly hear of member success stories and business partnerships based upon introductions and initiatives facilitated by the Chamber. Leading the Chamber over the last two years has been a rewarding experience. I have been fortunate to visit with many of you at your offices and am extremely impressed with the level of business process sophistication and know-how represented by your companies. Encompassing a wide-range of industries, our group is bound by its shared interest in strengthening the business ties of our two great nations. I feel very honored and privileged to carry out the associated tasks on behalf of each of you. The hard work and commitment of the Executive Committee, the Chamber staff, and the many dedicated member volunteers has propelled our organization to new heights. But, there is always room for improvement. We have not escaped the growing pains that come with rapid expansion. Rest assured, however, that we are our own worst critics! Our Executive Committee members, most of whom leaders within their own firms, are keenly aware of the ways in which the Chamber can advance and personally assist in the effort. I would also encourage each of you to submit your suggestions and ideas for improvement to us at your convenience promises to be another year of Chamber growth and development. Dedicated attention to event quality and topics will continue to drive growth as we look to involve more companies from Stavanger and beyond. Services for members at each level (Patron, Corporate and Associate) will be made increasingly clear as value-added offerings are defined. And membership communications will be more timely and informative than ever. It is my hope that you find this year s directory very useful. There are nearly twice as many member organizations listed within the pages of this publication as there were in the previous membership directory. As with any printed list, some member contact details will be out of date soon after they are released. Please feel free to contact us Monday thru Friday, 10-16:00, if you require any additional member contact details or assistance. We are here to serve you. On behalf of the Chamber staff, I wish you every success in 2005! Sincerely, Jason Turflinger MANAGING DIRECTOR

13 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 13 ERT with US Congressmen Bill Nunn presents gifts to the Congressmen Pictured (from left to right): Jason Turflinger (Managing, American Chamber), Congressman Wally Herger (R-California), Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R- Virginia), Bill Nunn (CEO, Nordic American), Congressman James T. Walsh (R-New York), and Birger Steen (General, Microsoft Norge) Microsoft Norge, Lilleaker February 20, 2004 The first American Chamber Executive Round Table (ERT) of 2004 was attended by three honored guests from the US Congress. The round table began with an introduction by Bill Nunn of Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia), Congressman Wally Herger (R-California), and Congressman James T. Walsh (R-New York). Jason Turflinger proceeded with an introduction of speakers - Mr. Anders Mediaas Wagle (Lawyer, Haavind Vislie), Ms. Grete Faremo ( of Law & Corporate Affairs, Microsoft), and Dr. John Markus Lervik (CEO, Fast Search & Transfer), Mr. Wagle gave an informative presentation entitled, Overview of Intellectual Property in Norway. He discussed how intellectual property right legislation in Norway is similar to other Scandinavian countries, including the EU which is generally a high level of protection for traditional intellectual property. He continued to explain that the enforcement of this legislation is particularly strict in Norway, and that the evolution of the internet has produced difficult problems in regulation and enforcement of intellectual property. Recently, the Norwegian courts have been settling these problems. Mr. Wagle discussed two case studies of internet trademark and copyright infringements in which the Norwegian courts have been siding towards the rights of the intellectual property owners. Ms. Faremo spoke on the Norwegian Business Environment for US IT Companies. She stressed the need for an appropriate balance of regulations for large businesses in Norway. In particular, that there should not be a reduction of rules and regulations in the current Norwegian big business market, and there also should not be an increase in regulations if companies are working fairly and functioning as good business leaders. Dr. Lervik s presentation was entitled, Competing in the Global Marketplace, in which he explained his company s experiences in the topic. In addition, Dr. Lervik presented how Fast Search & Transfer is creating new search platforms to increase efficiency and performance. Fast has been very successful at applying these systems within government entities and large businesses in the US. These three presentations were followed by a lively discussion. Congressman Herger opened with the issue of illegal use of web content, which evolved into a discussion of current and future use of broadband by home subscribers in Norway. Mr. Oddvar Hesjedal (Executive Vice President, Telenor) explained that approximately 70% of Norwegian residences currently have broadband access, with a goal of 95% by Congressman Goodlatte followed by asking the group an interesting question: Are recent business decisions in Norway and Europe potentially politically biased because of disagreements with US policies? The group concluded that it is hard to prove whether business decisions are politically motivated or not, but the premise of the question is one to follow closely in the future. Special thanks to the event host, Microsoft Norge, including General Birger Steen, and assistant Monica Setsaas. Event Sponsor

15 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 15 April Power Lunch Presentation by Victor D. Norman Professor Norman makes his case for a stronger and more independent Competition Authority Members listen intently to the presentation Radisson SAS Scandinavian, Oslo April 22, 2004 The Radisson SAS Scandinavia was the scene for the first in the Chamber s 2004 Power Luncheon series. Addressing a full room, the former Minister of Labor and Government Administration, Professor Victor Norman, discussed with members a topic on which he is well versed competition law in Norway, and the impending harmonization of Norwegian competition law with that of the EU. This was one of Professor Norman s first public appearances since stepping down from his government position earlier in March. He started off by presenting two key needs for a stronger and more independent Competition Authority; the need for a tough competition regime in Norway and the need for competition policy reforms in general. Professor Norman went on to provide several key elements of the new policy including: A tougher stand in individual cases New public procurement policy A stronger and more independent Competition Authority At one of the lighter points during the presentation, Professor Norman explained to members that in his view the term strategic, when used in business, means the same thing as killing off the competition. Several real world examples were provided to demonstrate the necessity of the changes taking place. In one case, a large company would no longer be permitted to offer progressive discounts to long-term customers. In other examples, Professor Norman showed how even smaller companies, including local plumbers and transport providers, must abide by the new changes. A question and answer session followed the presentation. Special thanks are in order to Professor Norman for an excellent presentation. Additionally, the Chamber would like to thank Coca-Cola Drikker for event sponsorship of the event; Mr. Wilhelm Matheson of member law firm Wiersholm, Mellbye & Bech for his assistance with in-depth questions during the Q&A session; and Mr. Anders Thue of member law firm Simonsen Føyen for his background information in preparation for the luncheon event. 17 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 17 May Power Lunch Presentation by Dr. Geir Lundestad Members enjoy a buffet luncheon after the thought-provoking lecture Nobel Institute, Oslo May 12, 2004 What is increasingly needed in these challenging political times are more long-term perspectives from wellinformed voices rising above the popular buzz of the day, stated the Chamber s Managing, Jason Turflinger, in his introduction of Dr. Geir Lundestad. Members of the Chamber were delighted to receive exactly that perspective from a gentleman with an impressive academic background and reputation within both Norway and the United States. What Dr. Lundestad, of the Nobel Institute for the past 14 years, did not offer guests was coy or ambiguous discourse. The notion of the good old days between Europe and the US is a myth, stated Lundestad in his presentation entitled US European Relations. Economic, political, and military issues have been challenging the relationship since long ago. Although the current state of affairs does not warrant the term crisis, insisted Dr. Lundestad, transatlantic drift may be an accurate description. Indeed, in his most recent book, The United States and Western Europe Since 1945: From Empire by Invitation to Transatlantic Drift, Dr. Lundestad supports these observations in detail. He lists the primary reasons for this proposed drift as the end of the Cold War, American political unilateralism, September 11th, and a strengthening EU. Throughout the presentation, Chamber corporate leaders received valuable information on just how transatlantic relationship realities, perceptions and misperceptions influence their business decisions every day. Dr. Lundestad s years of experience within the US European affairs arena strengthened his presentation and proved to be great education for the American Chamber members gathered at The Norwegian Nobel Institute that day. Dr. Lundestad s presentation was followed by a vigorous question and answer session. Special thanks are in order to Dr. Lundestad for his excellent presentation and the Nobel Institute for courteously hosting the event. Additionally, Esso Norge s support, which made this Chamber Power Luncheon possible. Event Sponsor

19 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 19 June Power Lunch Presentation by Jim Summerford John Ustas, Jim Summerford, Jason Turflinger, Steve Knackstedt, and G.W. Anslinger Members listen intently to the presentation Radisson SAS Scandinavia, Oslo June 17, 2004 The New Business Strategies in the Airline Industry Power Lunch began with a presentation by Jim Summerford (Vice President, Europe and Middle East) for Continental Airlines. Mr. Summerford presented factors of how Continental has proven to be successful on its Oslo-New York route. He stated that Continental boasts more efficiency in its line of aircraft, and has a better long term strategy than other carriers that have attempted the route in the past. Mr. Summerford also claimed that one of Continental s overall secrets to success is employee satisfaction, and ability of the GM to be understanding and accessible to all employees. This important quality is essential in good leadership, but is often overlooked by many top business executives. After the presentation, participants enjoyed lunch while networking with other members and guests. 23 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 23 US Election Night Event: Center Stage in Norway Ambassador Ong addresses the crowd as predictions are updated US Presidential Election Event November 2, 2004 Grand Hotel, Oslo Grand Hotel, Oslo November 2, 2004 The American Chamber celebrated the US presidential election by hosting the US Election Night Party, the only one of its kind in Oslo. This exclusive event was presented in cooperation with the US Embassy, Democrats Abroad, and Republicans Abroad. The event was sponsored by AIG Europe and cosponsored by DLA Nordic, Exxon Mobil, Citigroup, and IcelandAir. The venue for the election event was the beautiful Grand Hotel ballroom, including an accompanying room where the Paul Weeden s Jazz Band and Sophisticated Strings played late into the evening. In attendance was a fine mix of Americans and Norwegians that came together to talk politics, socialize, and follow the election results that were projected on large screens in the ballroom. In addition to the music, dancing, food, and political discussions, guests were treated to comic relief by Shabana Rehman as well as an address from US Ambassador John Doyle Ong. All of this excitement was covered by the top Norwegian television stations and newspapers; they used the event as their platform to cover the entire US presidential election. While many of the attendees left around midnight, approximately 150 Americans and Norwegians alike remained in the ballroom and followed the results on the big screens until 6am. The press also remained until the early morning hours, still covering the event and interviewing the remaining election enthusiasts. At this time the US polls were closed, but the election results were not final. Although many of the attendees went to sleep late that morning still wondering who won the election, there was no doubt that they had a marvelous time following the election, and making new friends and contacts, at the American Chamber s US presidential election event!

24 Yearbook and Membership y Thanksgiving Dinner Dance Dinner guests enjoying the evening s entertainment Gamle Logen, Oslo November 12, 2004 Pilgrims and Indians re-enact the history of Thanksgiving before dinner The annual American Chamber Thanksgiving Dinner and Dance was once again a spectacular evening and included a traditional Thanksgiving dinner followed by dancing and socializing. The event joined Americans (living in the US and Norway) and Norwegians together to celebrate this wonderful American holiday. The event was held at Gamle Logen, which proved to be a perfect place to host such a premier event. This year s Thanksgiving was extra special due to the attendance of 40 members from the Chicago chapter of the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce that timed their visit especially for the dinner! The dining was exquisite and the food was traditional American Thanksgiving fare, all the way from the sweet potatoes to the pumpkin pie. Guests were also entertained by a surprise Pilgrims and Indians play narrated by Jason Turflinger. This entertaining skit portrayed the history of Thanksgiving, and its importance in American culture. After the feast, guests enjoyed the upbeat jazz sounds of Cool-it, and many danced late into the night. There were also raffles for various items, including two lucky winners of rountrip tickets to the US courtesy of IcelandAir.

26 Yearbook and Membership y Internship Program Continues to Flourish and Make a Difference The internship program is now in its fourth straight year, with several organizations offering part-time positions to North American students in Oslo. In addition to the American Chamber of Commerce (the Chamber ), Fast Search and Transfer ( FAST ), Deloitte & Touche ( D&T ) and JPMorgan Chase ( JPMorgan ) are among the high profile Chamber members who have been realizing the benefits of an internship program. The students are on an exchange program with BI in Oslo for either the fall or spring semester; however, they have sufficient time and eagerness to start using their skills in the real world. The interns and participating members from the spring of 2003 included the following: Monica Hammer, International Coordinator at BI, has commented that, the internship program is an excellent way for BI to profile itself to North Americans interested in studying business abroad. Now we can offer an added bonus to the cultural and educational experience of attending our business school in Norway. What is expected of the interns? Each of the interns may be asked to work up to 16 hours a week, although achieving the right balance between work, school and a social life should be the realistic goal. Success in this respect depends on both the intern along with his or her immediate supervisor actively communicating and agreeing to be flexible in order to address mutual needs. All four of the positions require a command of the English language as well as proficient skills in using computer software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Accordingly, North American students with business related majors from top universities have the right background and make a good fit for the positions being offered. Kristin Maki was working for Jason Turflinger, the Chamber s MD, and provided much needed assistance in terms of day-to-day administrative tasks, monthly bookkeeping responsibilities and preparation for periodic events, such as the annual general meeting. Her business education was truly tested, as she was involved in controlling the Chamber s previously outsourced bookkeeping function. Mark Gough was particularly interested in getting real world experience with an IT start-up company. Thus, his interest and skill-set were a perfect match for Einar Aaland, CEO of SX Design, who needed assistance on a market research project covering SIP technology and specifically, IP telephony. In this regard, Mark Company Student Major University City, State/Province The Chamber Kristin Maki Marketing U. of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minnesota SX Design Mark Gough Accounting U. of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minnesota FAST Charlene Slivinski Business Simon Fraser Burnaby, British Columbia FAST Aurelia Dalinda Marketing McMaster Hamilton, Ontario

27 2005 Yearbook and Membership y 27 Mike Gough, Kristin Maki, Aurelia Dalinda and Charlene Slivinski was challenged to gather as much free market intelligence as possible on the Internet in order to assist the Company s management in properly updating its presentation to potential investors. Charlene Slivinski and Aurelia Dalinda were interns in the finance department of FAST, which is headed by André Demarest, Senior VP of Finance. Both were getting first-hand experience when it comes to meeting the accounting and finance related demands of a growing IT company. Also, as Charlene continued her study abroad for two semesters, she also continued her internship with FAST and was able to get involved in other business areas, such as sales and marketing related initiatives. André Demarest states that the internship program has been a perfect solution for me and my company since part-time employees with the right skill-set represent a highly efficient and effective resource. Charlene and Aurelia like those before them have been real assets and I believe both have gained a lot of good experience in the process. For example, Charlene s position over two semesters covered concrete areas such as creating a customer database and billing system in Access, working on financial analyses in Excel and preparing financial statements in Word. I m more than satisfied with the results of the program and I fully expect FAST to continue with its participation in the future. Where are the interns from the fall of 2002 and how did the program help? Michael Smith went from being an intern with D&T while studying abroad in Oslo to being offered an entry level position with KPMG s audit practice back home in Vancouver. Frances Loftus interned at the Chamber in Oslo and used her experience to differentiate herself from her peers in obtaining a full time position in Toronto with JB Acquisitions. Grant Ackerman used his internship experience with JPMorgan in Oslo to obtain a financial advisory position with TD Canada Trust in Victoria, British Columbia. As Charlene Slivinski had the opportunity to be an intern at FAST in Oslo for two semesters, she gained not only experience in diverse areas such as sales, marketing and finance but also exposure to high level members of management such as the CEO and COO/CFO. Both of whom were so impressed with her performance that they fully supported making an offer to her for a full time position with the company in Norway upon graduation from college in Canada. Her view is that it s close to impossible to obtain an overseas position in an international company straight out of university, so this opportunity is one that most business graduates would only dream of getting after years of experience. In my case, the internship program clearly facilitated the recruiting process as I already had established positive working relationships as well as built confidence and trust within the organization for nearly a year. I had no idea when I began my internship at FAST that it would make such a difference in both my career and my life. In July 2004, Charlene began her full time career with FAST in Oslo as its Sales Operations Coordinator for the EuropeMiddleEastAfrica( EMEA ) region. Frances Loftus, Grant Ackerman, Michael Smith and Charlene Slivinski
