3 Pre-reading Activities Directions: Take a few minutes to respond to the following questions in writing, then we ll discuss. 1. Many of you have probably seen the movie, The Wizard of Oz. If you have, answer the following question: How do you think the book will be different? If you have never seen the movie, on the lines below predict what you think this book will be about: 2. If you could travel to a make-believe land, what would it look like? Who would live there?
4 3. Look at the map of Oz below. If you only had time to visit one location in this land, which one would you choose and why? No need to write your answer down we ll discuss.

7 Chapter Two: In the space below, draw and color what you imagine a Munchkin man looks like, after reading the detailed description on page 6, or thereabouts. Then, go to this website to see how the movie imagined it. On the lines on the next page, compare your drawing with the Munchkin from the movie. Chapter Three: Why would Scarecrow be afraid of a lighted match?
8 Chapter Four: Do you think Scarecrow is smarter than he thinks? Answer this question, citing evidence from the text remember to include the page number of the text you cite. Chapter Five: If you had to choose, which would you rather have a brain to help you think, or a heart to help you love? Why? On pages 29 and 30 in Chapter 5, Dorothy and the Scarecrow meet the Tin Man. Compare and contrast that meeting from the book and Tin Man s story with the way the meeting is depicted in the movie.
