The promotion of positive experiences: science, ethics and policy considerations What constitutes a good life for sentient animals? Is the notion of a good life distinct from the avoidance of suffering? How should we promote positive experiences for farm, laboratory, companion and other animals? If we have duties to promote positive welfare in domestic animals, do we have similar duties towards wild animals? How do we measure positive welfare in animals, and what are the research gaps? To what extent is the promotion of positive welfare economically and commercially viable? Is the promotion of positive experience as important as the avoidance of suffering, both morally and legally? How might genetic modification impact the potential for a good life, and what are the ethical and policy implications? What can the discipline of behavioural medicine learn from the more developed field of human psychiatry? And indeed, can the human medical field learn from behavioural theory in veterinary medicine? What are the behavioural signs of animal abuse and how can we detect abuse in domestic animals? What is the current state of forensic medicine using animals and how can we improve on this? What is the state of affairs for puppy mills and cat hoarding in terms of behavioural considerations and policy? 3 Abstract submission instructions Please send abstracts to: There are several categories for abstract submission: Completed scientific research, reviews, analyses or reports that are ready for publication Short communications about ongoing research, e.g. part of a PhD, clinical case studies, reviews, analyses and reports There are 3 categories to select from for your presentation: Longer spoken presentations (25 minutes, plus 5 minutes discussion) e.g. data-based, original finished scientific research or reviews ready for publication Shorter spoken presentations (10 minutes, plus 5 minutes discussion) e.g case reports, treatment regimes, data-based content or other material about ongoing research Poster presentations e.g. case reports, treatment regimes, data-based content or other material. Authors may be asked to give a brief presentation (3 minutes) on their poster. A maximum of 2 abstracts may be submitted by each presenting (or first) author (e.g., 1 spoken and 1 poster presentation, or 2 posters). Delegates presenting posters must be present for each day of the Congress. All submissions will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee. Abstracts will be assessed based on the importance of the research, the scientific merit of the work, and the clarity of the abstract. Research abstracts should include the following components: An introduction - a few sentences introducing the study and its objectives Methodology including description of participants (both human and animal), such as number (n), type, age, gender, and species, and a description of the study design, data collection, data analysis and apparatus used. This may include qualitative research, papers on ethical analysis, and law reports. Main results - including, where appropriate, statistical tests, significance level and actual test value (e.g., F(df) =?, p < 0.05) Principal conclusions and implications for the field Critical review abstracts should include the following components: An introduction (a clear statement of the purpose of the review) Key literature references to theory, concepts, evidence or methodology that have been reviewed or re-evaluated Main findings Principal conclusions and implications for the field

4 Case series, case reports or descriptions of aspects of clinical practice abstracts should include the following components: An introduction (anamnesis, aetiology, background information regarding the case), Key literature references to theory, concepts, evidence or methodology Diagnosis, case management and evidence base Principal conclusions and implications for the field. The Scientific Committee recognise that the structure and content of submitted abstracts will reflect the different disciplinary fields represented in this congress. The above categories are more applicable to natural-science based disciplines such as animal welfare science and behavioural medicine. The Committee recognises that abstracts and presentations in other disciplines, particularly ethics and law, may follow a structure more appropritate for the discipline. Abstract formatting instructions Please follow the guidelines below when submitting an abstract. 1. All abstracts should be written in English 2. All abstracts should be typed, single-line spaced and must fit on one page 3. Use Arial font size 12 throughout 4. First line: indicate presentation category, session and absract type in capital letters: a. Category: LONG or SHORT SPOKEN PRESENTATION or POSTER b. Session for which the abstract is submitted: ANIMAL WELFARE SCIENCE, ETHICS AND LAW or ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR c. The type of abstract submitted: RESEARCH, REVIEW, CASE SERIES or CASE STUDY 5. Second line: write a descriptive, concise, meaningful title in bold 6. Third line: name of author(s). Please underline the presenting author. 7. Fourth line: address of author(s) (institution, city, country) and address of presenting author 8. All abstracts should include a statement of any conflict of interest after the author details. This should include information about affiliations, research funders, memberships for all authors that may be taken into account by readers when evaluating the research 9. Then leave two blank lines 10. On the next line, the text of the abstract no longer than 250 words 11. Do not indent paragraphs but leave a one-line gap between paragraphs 12. When using uncommon abbreviations, spell out in full when first mentioned, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Do not abbreviate in the title of the abstract 13. Do not include tables or diagrams in the abstract

5 14. For critical reviews, key references should be listed in abbreviated form, e.g., Dutton, D. and Williams, C Anthrozoös 17(1): Abstracts must be submitted electronically (MS Word attachment). Two copies of the abstract should be submitted, one with the authors names, affiliations and conflicts of interest removed to enable blinded review. The Scientific Committee will contact the first authors to inform them if their abstracts have been accepted. Responsibility for the programme lies with the Scientific Committee. The decisons of the Committee are final. The abstracts will be published as scientific proceedings. The author is responsible for the quality of English and we suggest that all abstracts are checked by a native Englishspeaking person.
