1 New York City College of Technology The City University of New York Department of Communication Design Course Description An introduction to computer 3D modeling, rendering and animation using the Maya software environment. Students learn basic tools and techniques for building models and scenes, rendering them with surfaces and basic keyframe animation with simple joint hierarchies. While exploring 3D design aesthetics, the course emphasizes the practical and technical features of the software. 2 cl hr, 2 lab hrs, 3 cr Prerequisites COMD 2400 or MTEC 2125 Course Objectives INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES ASSESSMENT WEEKS APPLIED For the successful completion of this Evaluation methods and course, students should be able to: criteria Use the Maya interface to create 3D models and animation 1, 8 Use Primitive modeling forms to create more complex models Create simple 3D surface models Use Meshes Tools to create polygonal models

2 Build a 3D scene in Maya Apply computer generated lights and shadows to a 3D scene Render a 3D scene to a still graphic Apply texture maps to a 3D surface Explain what UV texture space does Understand how to create and apply texture maps Create basic Keyframe animation Explain how the Graph Editor works Use simple joints and hierarchy of joints to animate a non-deforming Use a Motion Path or Flow Path to animate an object Composite a still image or animated sequence of 3D renders in a program like After Effects 1 4 5, 6, 11 5, , , 12, 15 General Education Outcomes 2

3 General Education Outcome covered: Listening: The student will demonstrate the ability to discern pertinent information from irrelevant information. Speaking: The student will demonstrate the ability to articulate himself using relevant industry- specific language The student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate strengths and relevance of arguments on a particular issue. The student will demonstrate the ability to determine whether certain conclusions or consequences are supported by the information provided. How the outcome is covered: Students will be able to create assignments and projects from oral instruction. Students will be able to evaluate the success of their own work, and other student work, through critiques. Students will be able to evaluate the success of their own work, and other student work, through critiques.
