This chapter centers on the sons of David, The Davidic Kings and the Royal line after the return from the Babylonian exile. A. While some of these people are little known, many of them are well known biblical characters about whom much is said elsewhere in Scripture. B. Coffman, quoting Henry H. Halley, wrote, Most of these genealogies are incomplete with many breaks in the lists, but main line is there. C. Hicks states of chapter 3, Here is the heartbeat of Judah s genealogy. 1. The Davidic line is the royal line. 2. All the royal lines of the Northern Kingdom were extinguished, Hicks stated.

4 Commentary: 3. The royal Davidic line continues in Christ the Messiah! The Sons of David 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, These were the sons of David born to him in Hebron: The firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel; the second, Daniel the son of Abigail of Carmel; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; and the sixth, Ithream, by his wife Eglah. These six were born to David in Hebron, where he reigned seven years and six months. David reigned in Jerusalem thirty-three years, and these were the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon. These four were by Bathsheba daughter of Ammiel. There were also Ibhar, Elishua, Eliphelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet nine in all. All these were the sons of David, besides his sons by his concubines. And Tamar was their sister. (NIV1984) I. These were the sons of David born to him in Hebron where he reigned seven years, six months. A. The firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel. B. The second born was Daniel (Chileab) the son of Abigail of Carmel. C. The third born was Absalom the son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur. D. The fourth born was Adonijah the son of Haggith.

5 E. The fifth born was the son of Abital. F. The sixth born was Ithream by David s wife Eglah. G. Each son in the above list was born by a different mother, at least one of which (Maacah daughter of Talmai King of Geshur) was a non-israelite. II. David reigned in Jerusalem thirty-three years, and these were born to him there: A. Shammua, Shabab, Nathan and Solomon were the sons of Bathsheba, daughter of Ammiel. B. Also born to David in Jerusalem were Ibhar, Elishua, Eliphelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet nine in all. 1. The maternal parentage is not given for these sons in this passage. C. David also had sons in Jerusalem by his concubines. D. One particulate daughter, Tamar, Absalom s sister, was named as having been born to David in Jerusalem Kings 13:1-22, In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them. So the LORD s anger burned against Israel, and for a long time

6 he kept them under the power of Hazael king of Aram and Ben-Hadad his son. Then Jehoahaz sought the LORD s favor, and the LORD listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. The LORD provided a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. But they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole remained standing in Samaria. Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time. As for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? Jehoahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoash his son succeeded him as king. In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he continued in them. As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, all he did and his achievements, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? Jehoash rested with his fathers, and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. Now Elisha

7 was suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. My father! My father! he cried. The chariots and horsemen of Israel! Elisha said, Get a bow and some arrows, and he did so. Take the bow in your hands, he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king s hands. Open the east window, he said, and he opened it. Shoot! Elisha said, and he shot. The LORD s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram! Elisha declared. You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek. Then he said, Take the arrows, and the king took them. Elisha told him, Strike the ground. He struck it three times and stopped. The man of God was angry with him and said, You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times. Elisha died and was buried. Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man s body into Elisha s tomb. When the body touched Elisha s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet. Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. (NIV1984) The Kings of Judah 1 Chronicles 3:10-16, Solomon s son was Rehoboam, Abijah his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son, Jehoram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son, Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son,

8 Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son, Amon his son, Josiah his son. The sons of Josiah: Johanan the firstborn, Jehoiakim the second son, Zedekiah the third, Shallum the fourth. The successors of Jehoiakim: Jehoiachin his son, and Zedekiah. (NIV1984) I. David and Solomon were followed as kings of Judah by their descendants: A. Rehoboam B. Abijah C. Asa D. Jehoshaphat E. Jehoram F. Ahaziah G. Joash H. Amaziah I. Azariah J. Jotham K. Ahaz L. Hezekiah M. Manasseh N. Amon O. Josiah

To this point the royal descendants have been presented in linear form. (Hicks) 2. At this point the genealogical pattern shifts to a mixed approach (segmentation followed by linear). 3. The sons of Josiah were Johanan, the firstborn, Jehoiakim, the second son, Zedekiah, the third, Shallum the fourth. Second Kings 23:31, 34, 36 and Second Kings 24:17, 18 list only three sons and these are not identical with the above four. These three are Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim and Zedikiah. Some identify Shallum with Jehoahaz. a. 2 Kings 23:31, 34, 36, Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah and changed Eliakim s name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, and there he died. Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother s name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah; she was from Rumah. (NIV1984) b. 2 Kings 24:17, 18, He made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin s uncle, king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah. Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. (NIV1984)

10 P. Jehoahaz (Joahaz) Q. Jehoiakim (Eliakim) R. Jehoiachin S. Zedekiah (Mattaniah) 1. Zedekiah was Jehoiachin s uncle. The Royal Line after Exile 1 Chronicles 3:17-24, The descendants of Jehoiachin the captive: Shealtiel his son, Malkiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama and Nedabiah. The sons of Pedaiah: Zerubbabel and Shimei. The sons of Zerubbabel: Meshullam and Hananiah. Shelomith was their sister. There were also five others: Hashubah, Ohel, Berekiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-Hesed. The descendants of Hananiah: Pelatiah and Jeshaiah, and the sons of Rephaiah, of Arnan, of Obadiah and of Shecaniah. The descendants of Shecaniah: Shemaiah and his sons: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah and Shaphat six in all. The sons of Neariah: Elioenai, Hizkiah and Azrikam three in all. The sons of Elioenai: Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah and Anani seven in all. (NIV1984) I. The descendants of Jehoiachin were Shealtiel his son, Malkiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama and Nedabiah. A. Jehoiachin reigned 3 months in Jerusalem after which he was taken as a captive to Babylon where he lived at least 37 years Kings 24:15, Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. He also took from Jerusalem to Babylon the king s mother, his wives, his officials and the leading men of the land. (NIV1984)

Kings 25:27, In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Evil-Merodach became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin from prison on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. (NIV1984) II. The sons of Pedaiah were Zerubbabel and Shemi. A. Zerubbabel led the first group of captives back to Jerusalem from Babylon and was the prime force in the rebuilding of the Temple on its original site. 1. Shealtiel is named as father of Zerubbabel rather than Pedaiah in several references. a. Ezra 3:2, Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. (NIV1984) b. Haggai 1:1, In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest: (NIV1984) 2. The LXX corrects this and replaces Pedaiah with Shealtiel. a. Shealtiel may have died childless and, though a leverate marriage, Pedaiah may have begotten Zerubbabel.

12 III. The sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullum, Hananiah, Hashubab, Ohel, Berekiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-Hesed. A. Shelomith was sister of Meshullam and Hananiah. IV. The descendants of Hananiah were Pelatiah and Jeshaiah as well as the sons of Rephaiah, of Arnon, of Obadiah and of Shecaniah. V. The descendants of Shecaniah were Shemaiah and his sons; viz., Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah and Shaphat six in all. VI. The sons of Neariah were Elioenai, Hizkiah and Azrikam three in all. VII. The sons of Elioenai were Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah and Anani seven in all. Conclusion: I. It is truly amazing that the royal line of David continued intact through the seventy year Babylonian captivity and, without interruption, to Christ Jesus, the Messiah. A. God s providence is evident.
