The Sewage waste water plant of tomorrow Östen Ekengren IVL-Swedish Environmental Research Institute Presentation

What we have: A treatment facility Wastewater in Energy in GHG out Treated Water out Sludge out Problems/Challenges The water sector is a major energy user GHG emissions Treated water is not used Outflows may contain pollutants, viruses, pathogens, pharmaceutical residues etc. Sludge seen as a problem 2

Global Water Stress

What we want: A production facility Nutrients out Wastewater in Energy out Water reuse Opportunities Waste as a resource Net energy production Nutrients recovery/reuse Improved treatment (P,N Pharmaceutical residues) Water reuse 4

A unique R&D facility Access to different wastewaters Five different treatment lines Relevant scale to get realistic results Mobile treatment modules Sludge handling/ biogas production System integration Competence Excellent for up-scaling Applied and basic research Ledningsnät Pumpstation Pumping station Monitoring station Mätstation Galler Sandfång ev Utjämning Försedimentering Utvecklingslinjer Pretreatment Anaerobic / Aerobic lines Slambehandling Sludge treatment Henriksdal 5

On-going projects Enhanced biogas production Anammox: cost-effective and environmentally friendly nitrogen reduction technology for all the water Minimizing the release of GHG from wastewater treatment The use of waste heat for stable temperatures during the biological treatment Production of pure P from sludge and ashes Complementary treatment with algae/co 2 sequestration Water reuse for non-potable and augmentation of potable water Online water quality monitoring and softsensor development Climate effective treatment (SBR, Anaerobic, Membranes,..) Five universities and two research institutes involved. 10

Market Companies Universities and Institutes KTH, SLU, JTI, MDH, Uppsala Universitet, Lunds Universitet, IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet Tsinghua University, Nankai,CRAES,TAES,Berkley Demand Naturvårdsverket, LRF, Svenskt Vatten, Käppalaförbundet, Syvab, Stockholm Vatten, HS 2020, Sveriges Ingenjörer, Mälarenergi (Västerås), Uppsala Vatten, Karlskrona Kommun, Borlänge Energi Stockholm Stad, Binhai New Area,Tianjin EPB Xylem Cerlic Aqua-Q Mercatus Malmberg Cortus XZERO Nordic W Mantex Vilokan Läckeby Wallenius ÅF Envac Scania 11

Market penetration Universities and Research Institutes establish rules for commercialization of the R&D. Establishment of a commercialization company at Sjöstadsverket. Xylem as a locomotive company System solution but also part of the solution like biogas and reuse of water China as testmarket New models for financing and dissemination of results Co-operation with EU members Strategic co-operation with R&D in China,India and US 12

Expected outfall after finalised project (1 billion SEK=110 million EURO) To present a future orientated solution to the market : Production of energy instead of consumtion of energy and decreased emission of GHG. Increased production of biogas/hydrogen gas by combined treatment of sludges and organic waste Recirculation of water Recovery of P to the farmerland Removal of pharmaceutical residues and other priority pollutants. Adapted to both small and large scale solutions. 13

Expected outfall An export increase with 3 times, five years after finalised project. Increased amount of employees at least 3000 mostly higher education needed Increased commercialization based on patent and new industries Focused R&D and education of world class. Sjöstadsverket- a demonstration plant of world class. Effecient innovation chain with a locomotive company 14
