**IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE DATA TO BE MAPPED. TAKE A MINUTE TO READ THE DATA DESCRIPTIONS.** LABFC_06 Total labour force 15 years and over 2006 AGRIC_06 11 Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting 2006 (NAICS) ACCOM_06 72 Accommodation and food services 2006 (NAICS) MACHINE_06 J1 Machine operators in manufacturing 2006 (NOCS) LABFC_01 Total labour force 15 years and over 2001 AGRIC_01 11 Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting 2001 (NAICS) ACCOM_01 72 Accommodation and food services 2001 (NAICS) MACHINE_01 J1 Machine operators in manufacturing 2001 (NOCS) LABFC_96 Total labour force 15 years and over 1996 AGRIC_96 Division A Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting 1996 (NAICS) ACCOM_96 Division Q Accommodation and food services 1996 (NAICS) MACHINE_96 J1 Machine operators in manufacturing 1996 (NOCS) MANAGEMT Occupations in Management (tutorial data) MAPPING YOUR DATA 4) Right-click on the assignment_map layer in the Table of Contents and select Properties. The Layer Properties dialogue box will open. 5) Click on the Symbology tab. 6) Under Show:, click on Quantities > Graduated colors. 2

A NOTE ABOUT CENSUS MAPPING: When mapping statistics, it is wise to generate maps based on the percentage of a given population. For example, to map management occupations, divide the management field by the total labour force then multiply by 100 to determine the percentage of the labour force in Management occupations. Management Total Labour Force x 100 Mapping percentages is accomplished using the Normalization option within ArcMap. Normalization automatically determines percentage. 7) In the Value drop-down box, select the census Field you want to map. (Refer to the table AT THE END of this tutorial for a description of Fields listed.) FOR THIS TUTORIAL, select the MANAGEMT field. 8) In the Normalization drop-down, select LABFC_06 (this is the total labour force population for 2006). DO NOT use <PERCENT OF TOTAL>. 9) In the Color Ramp drop-down box, select an appropriate colour ramp. NOTE: Clicking on the Symbol, Range or Label column, allows the user to flip the colour ramp (darker colours are often associated with higher values) reverse sort the classification and format labels. 10) Click Label > Format labels 11) Select Percentage and click the option for the number representing a fraction. 12) Click the Numeric Options button to change the number of decimal places to one. 13) Click OK to all dialogue boxes until you see your map. 3

Editing the Classification 14) To make additional changes to the map display, right-click assignment_map and select Properties. 15) To customize the class intervals, click Classify on the Symbology tab. The Classification dialogue box will open. The default classification method is Natural Breaks. This method provides a good indicator of the spread of data values. For mapping purposes, it is good to clean up the values by manually altering the Break Values. Notice the classification statistics! Number of Census Subdivisions in each CLASS Notice the natural breaks represented by this data. Enter new values here. % of the Labour Force Observing the natural breaks we see that 4 class intervals would represent the data well. Depending on the data being mapped, the creator may choose more or less intervals to represent the data. 16) Change the number of class intervals to 4 and customize the Break Values; type in new values for each interval. 17) To accept the classification parameters, click OK. Flip the colour symbols so the darkest/highest value is at the top. 18) Click OK again to apply the Layer Properties. 4

19) To rename the layer according to the mapped variable, slowly CLICK TWICE on the layer label and type Management. 20) SAVE YOUR MAP It is suggested at this point to Select File > Save as to save a new ArcMap document named for the subject of the map, in this case Management. CUSTOMIZING THE MAP Some map basics have been established in the layout including a North arrow, scale bar and source statement. The following steps show how to add labels, a title and a legend. 21) To label the census subdivisions, right-click on the Management layer and click Label Features. 5

22) To change the sample title, double-click the text and enter an appropriate title for the map. Keep in mind the variable description, the geographic coverage, and the year of the data used. 23) To add a legend, select Insert > Legend. The Legend Wizard dialogue box will open. 24) The default settings are acceptable for this project. Click Next >. Each step will offer different options for the legend. Continue through the steps until finished. The legend is automatically generated and added to the map. 25) To change the sub-titles, manually edit the values in the Table of Contents by slowly double-clicking the text. These changes will be reflected in your legend. Example of a final map: Save your final work then close ArcMap and start fresh with Assignment_Map.mxd (step 2). 6

PRINTING/EXPORTING/SAVING 34) To print, select File > Print Preview. If the layout looks acceptable, click print. 35) To export the finished map to a format suitable for Microsoft WORD or PowerPoint, go to File > Export Map 36) From the Save as Type dropdown list, choose JPEG. 37) Select an appropriate location to save the image, give the file a unique name and click Export. It is important to save each map as an ArcMap document as well. 38) Select File > Save as 39) In the Save as dialogue box, navigate to your student folder, give the file a name reflective of the subject and click Save. Repeat these steps for each map you create. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TABLE of Census data Fields The attributes included with the boundary file are summarized below.
