1 Kindly supported by Programme Radio in Europe - Europe on radio International expert meeting held by Inforadio rbb and the European Academy Berlin Thursday, 12 Friday, 13 May 2016 as of: 11/5/2016 held in English and German
2 Page 2 Thursday, 12 May :15 hrs. light lunch at the European Academy Berlin 14:00 14:15 hrs. Welcome address Seminar Director, European Academy Berlin CHRISTOPH SINGELNSTEIN Editor-in-Chief, Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (rbb) 14:15 15:30 hrs. The role of news radio for cohesion in Europe There is, apparently, no shortage of information, transmitted through many channels, often taking the briefest text format (Facebook, Twitter etc.) Thus new questions arise: What role do traditional news broadcasts still play nowadays? How can they help in conveying contexts in European policy and strengthening cohesion in Europe? How do those in charge see their role? What else does a news broadcaster need to provide in addition in its programme? What stories does an all-news format need to tell and first and foremost: how? DR. DAVID BIESINGER Programme Director, rbb Inforadio NINA GLANS Programme Director, P1 Sveriges Radio JONATHAN WALL Head of BBC 5 Live 15:30 16:00 hrs. coffee / tea LEON STEBE Presenter and Editor, rbb Inforadio 16:00 17:00 hrs. 'The audience is the news!?'' Listener loyalty in news radio stations in Europe The fact that some station has reported a lot about Europe does not necessarily mean that it has achieved major effects, because listeners 'hop' to another channel. What expectations do listeners have of a modern news radio station? How can the audience be integrated into the programme so that they 'stick at it'? What opportunities and pitfalls are arising from increasing digitalisation? Can, or should, a news radio station be a 'social' medium too? Is this a way to interest listeners in Europe? ANTOINE BAYET Head of Digital News, France Info ARTHUR LANDWEHR Programme Director SWR info / Editor-in-Chief SWR Radio Division TIM SCHWIESAU rbb 24
3 Page 3 17:00 18:00 hrs. Faster, more comprehensive, of even higher quality? Political journalism in the European radio landscape Final discussion with the expert audience ANNETTE NOLTING Head of Editorial Planning and Departments, Inforadio rbb 18:00 hrs. Bus transfer to HAUS DES RUNDFUNKS (rbb) Address: Masurenallee 8 14, Berlin 18:45 hrs. Guided tour through the broadcasting station followed by reception Friday, 13 May :45 10:15 hrs. Keynote address The future of European democracy ALEXANDER GRAF LAMBSDORFF Vice-President of the European Parliament Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe 10:15 11:15 hrs. 'The news we can trust ' Coming back to Europe in unity The European Union is currently involved in facing four concurrent crises, the refugee crisis, the security crisis in view of terrorist attacks, the economic, monetary and social crisis which still needs to be dealt with, and growing nationalism and populism in EU member states. Reliable information is required to form a basis for public debate on the EU in the member states. How do news radio stations enable us to hear the whole European picture? How do they deal with increasing polarisation in society? What do they need to do to retain their credibility? ALEXANDER GRAF LAMBSDORFF Vice-President of the European Parliament DR. FRAUKE GERLACH Director of the Grimme Institute DAGMAR REIM Director of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) MERCEDES RIEDERER Editor-in-Chief for Radio, BR (Bavarian broadcasting corporation) 11:15 11:30 hrs. coffee / tea DIETMAR RINGEL Presenter and Editor, rbb Inforadio
4 Page 4 11:30 13:00 hrs. 'When Europe is the news ' policy on Europe in reporting Currently, the European Union has seemed paralysed. Where big decisions were needed, often Heads of State and Government only achieved minor progress. Or are there indeed only retrograde steps? Borders have been sealed to refugees. Free movement without border checks seems over. The current refugee crisis threatens to divide the EU. Correspondents inform listeners in their homeland about the course of the debate in other European countries. What do they think about the state of the EU? What image do they convey back home? How can better communication with one another succeed again at the European level? 13:00 14:30 hrs. lunch GENNARO PELLINO Berlin Correspondent RAI BIRGIT SCHWARZ Berlin Correspondent ORF WOJCIECH SZYMANSKI Berlin Correspondent Polskie Radio PETER VOEGELI Berlin Correspondent Radio SRF DRS ANGELA ULRICH, rbb Berlin studio 14:30 16:00 hrs. 'News for the public - for the European public?!' What about European political public opinion? National action taken alone is becoming the method of choice in some EU member states. At the same time, right-wing populist and xenophobic movements are attracting increased followings. Often, pan-european approaches to solving conflicts seem to have hardly any chance of success. But do all EU citizens really want to retreat to their own land? Do we not right now need a pan-european political public sphere? How can we pave the way for a European public sphere? Where are transnational discussion processes possible and in these times also urgently required? 16:00 hrs. conference ends DR. FRANZISKA BRANTNER, MP Deputy Member of the Committee for the Affairs of the European Union in the German Parliament ISABELL HOFFMANN Project Manager The Future of Europe at Bertelsmann Stiftung ELINA MAKRI Vice President, Café Babel International HARALD SCHUMANN Journalist Der Tagegsspiegel, Film Maker MICHAEL THIESER Saarland Broadcasting Corporation / Franco-German Radio Commission Seminar Director, European Academy Berlin
