JDRF is the type 1 diabetes charity, improving lives until we find the cure. We fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. We also provide information for children and adults living with the condition at all stages, from diagnosis and

2 beyond. We give a voice to people with type 1 diabetes and work for increased focus on, and funding for, research to find the cure. To manage the delivery of key research communication initiatives for JDRF staff and supporters 2. To work with the Director of Research Partnerships to promote type 1 diabetes research to JDRF UK s key audiences through relevant channels 3. To represent JDRF, and build relationships with, key audiences including supporters and type 1 diabetes clinical and research communities. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Lead the communication of type 1 diabetes research to an external and internal audience 2. Lead on the review and refresh of research communication packages for internal and external use to drive engagement of new and existing contacts with JDRF s mission. 3. Proactively identify new opportunities to engage people affected by type 1 in JDRF s research work. 4. Build and maintain an excellent knowledge of the global landscape of type 1 diabetes research to anticipate and respond effectively to new research developments as they emerge. 5. Work with the Community Engagement team to ensure JDRF staff can access up to date information about treatments and technologies used by people with type 1 diabetes to manage their condition, with a particular focus on ensuring staff are equipped with information about new and emerging treatments. 6. Build and maintain existing relationships held by the research communications team. Develop new relationships with the type 1 diabetes research community. 7. Work with Director of Research Partnerships to support JDRF s wider policy and public affairs work to increase funding of type 1 diabetes research and deliver outcomes of that research to people living with type 1 diabetes. 8. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Criteria Essential Desirable Experience: Proven track record of translating science for lay audiences Demonstrable experience of delivering Communication activities to set plans and targets Working within a communications team Experience of line management Ability to manage own workload and that of others Experience of public speaking Experience of delivering training Knowledge of the scientific, research and medical sectors Knowledge of diabetes and diabetes research, or another autoimmune condition Working within a medical research charity communications team Working in an income generation environment Experience of using digital channels to deliver scientific content Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills Strong interpersonal skills and ability to form and build good working relationships with key audiences Excellent presentation skills Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work and handle conflicting demands Knowledge of the charity sector.

5 and deadlines Consistent attention to detail, competent editing and proof reading skills Knowledge of social media including Twitter Excellent oral communication and presentation skills, with the ability to represent JDRF in public, Ability to work independently under own initiative and as part of a team. Working knowledge of MS Office Personality: Commitment to JDRF s goals. Commitment to working towards agreed priorities. An understanding of how to contribute to teamwork and manage cross-organisational working relationships. Ability to work within budget constraints. Outgoing, confident, friendly and professional. Education: Science degree Additional academic qualification (e.g. PhD or Masters) in science or science communication Other: Willingness to work occasionally outside office hours Willingness to undertake occasional national and international travel on behalf of JDRF UK.
