3 The Early Stage 1 program is based on our belief that children are: capable, creative and rich in potential deserving of respect and have rights communication seekers and build relationships from birth able to construct their own meaning and understanding capable of making their own informed decisions rich in knowledge and possess more skills than is realised individuals within a group who learn collaboratively capable of solving problems and resolving conflicts able to develop self-esteem when listened to by adults diverse in background, culture, needs and strengths

4 The Early Stage 1 teacher believes that: teachers facilitate new knowledge, skills and understanding by providing effective learning opportunities that are engaging and appropriate to the child s stage of development. self-esteem, confidence and learning experiences are fostered in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment. emphasis on the development of positive relationships and social skills facilitates a smooth transition to school and life-long learning.

5 Class programs will provide engaging teaching and learning experiences which reflect the NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC) syllabus outcomes This year the new Australian K-6 English curriculum has been implemented across the school In 2015 the new K-6 Mathematics and Science syllabus will be will be implemented across the school The focus of all learning activities will be on exposure and mastery of concepts and skills contained within each outcome.

11 The VPS Orientation program supports each child to: transition from preschool, day-care centre or home to the school setting develop concentration skills to optimise success interact, share and cooperate with adults and other children express their needs, listen carefully, follow teacher instruction and learn school rules In general children are ready for school when they demonstrate aspects of the above and are: independent and confident in hygiene skills ready to cope with a five day per week school program REMEMBER: You know your child better than anyone

12 Kindergarten children organised into small groups within a class Each group is allocated three Year 6 buddies - friendly, helpful and willing to support each child in their transition to big school Buddies will be introduced at the first orientation visit held in October Buddies will provide support before school, at recess and lunch in the first weeks of schooling Support may continue for some children until they demonstrate they are comfortable among their peers and confident in the school setting.

13 Best Start individual assessment interviews are conducted during the first week of school. Individual online booking times and procedures will be addressed during the orientation process. Each student attends school for 40 minute session with their teacher. Parents will be given written feedback by the end of Term 1.

14 Supervision begins at 8:55, lining up bell is 9:20am and class time is 9:25am Kindergarten will finish the day in the first 5 weeks of Term 1 at the earlier time of 2:45pm School finishing time is 3:15pm for the remainder of the year A duty teacher will provide supervision before the morning bell. At home time, teachers remain with their class until each child is met by a parent or guardian For a fee, Out of School Hours care (OOSH) is provided before and after school on site, exclusively for Valentine students.

15 Orientation sessions are timetabled for: 1. October starting school information pack - guest speakers uniform shop canteen and P&C committees Oosh manager school office 1. November numeracy learning 2. November literacy learning 3. December - Christmas family BBQ Orientation sessions, dates and times will be posted via Vippi letter to each child this term
