1 How to Borrow Kindle Books On Your ipad What you will need before starting: 1. WIFI or 3G connection 2. Westlake Porter Public Library Card number (located on the back of your card, starts with PPPL, a total of 14 characters; card should be in good standing) 3. Apple ID 4. Amazon account and Amazon account password Books Published by Penguin Kindle Books published by Penguin can no longer be read on your Kindle app. They can only be read in the Adobe epub format using the Overdrive app.

2 There are two ebook formats available to you 1. Adobe EPUB format: ebooks in this format will be downloaded to your Overdrive App 2. Kindle format: ebooks in this format will be downloaded to your Amazon Kindle App What is the difference between the two: The text of the ebook does not change regardless of which format you choose to use. Here are the differences: 1. Adobe EPUB ebook: -- you will need to get an Adobe ID from -- you will read the Adobe EPUB ebook inside the Overdrive Media Console App -- the Overdrive App has a dictionary function but does NOT have notes and highlighting options currently 2. Kindle ebook format -- you will need to sign up with Amazon for an Amazon account -- you will read the Kindle Book inside the Kindle App -- the Kindle App and the Kindle devices have dictionary, notes and highlighting options

3 Setting Up Getting the Kindle App Go to the App store Tap Search (on the bottom of the screen) or Tap Featured (The Search box will appear on the upper right corner) Type in Kindle in the search box then tap Search Tap the Kindle App Tap Free Tap Install Type in your APPLE ID password then tap OK The Kindle App will start downloading Registering your ipad Tap the Kindle App It will open to the Home page Tap the sprocket or cog on the lower right corner of the screen Tap Settings Tap Register this Device (if you ve already done this, it would say Registered to Your Name ) Type in your Amazon account address then your Amazon account password Tap Register this Kindle You re ipad is now registered to your Amazon account

4 Browsing/Searching for Kindle Books 1. Open Safari 2. Go to overdrive.westlakelibrary.org 3. If you know the title of the book you are looking for, tap Search. Type in the title and click Go 4. If you d like to browse, you can do it two ways BROAD SEARCH: this will list all the Kindle Book titles we own (this includes titles that are checked out and titles available to borrow right now) 1. Tap Browse 2. Click on Kindle Book titles 3. Titles are sorted according to the Date they were Added to the library s collection. You have the option of sorting them by tapping the tabs for Title, Creator, Popularity, Date Added (these tabs are located right above the first item on the list) FOCUSED SEARCH: this will list Kindle Book titles available to borrow right now 1. Tap Search 2. Click on Advanced on the right hand side of the screen (located under the word Go) 3. Scroll down to Format 4. Tap the drop down arrow under Format 5. Choose Kindle Book 6. Scroll all the way down 7. Tap the box next to Only show titles with copies available 8. Tap Search WISH LIST: Any time during the browsing process, you can add Kindle Books to your Wish List by clicking on Add to Wish List. This list will keep track of books you may want to borrow in the future. It will NOT put items on hold or check them out. To do that, you would have to click on Place a hold or Add to ebookbag. As always, choose the Kindle Format when adding items to your wish list.

5 Placing Holds 1. If the book you d like to borrow is currently checked out, you will see the Place a Hold button, instead of Add to ebookbag. 2. Click on Place a Hold next to the Kindle Book format 3. Type in your library card number (if you haven t already) and click Login 4. You will be prompted to type in your address twice 5. Click Place a Hold 6. You will receive an when the selected title becomes available for checkout 7. You will have 3 days to check out the selected title, once you receive the Checking Out 1. Once you ve found a book on our Digital Media Site using your computer, you ll see below the title, two or three formats available (Kindle Book, Adobe EPUB ebook, Adobe PDF ebook) 2. Tap the Add to ebookbag button right next to Kindle Book. DO NOT tap the Add to ebookbag button right next to the other formats (EPUB and PDF) 3. Tap Proceed to checkout 4. Type in your library card number (starts with pppl and is 14 characters long, no spaces, no need to capitalize) 5. Tap the box right next to Remember me on this device 6. Tap Login 7. If you ve chosen a Penguin book (with the warning Kindle devices via USB only ), you will not be able to read it using your Kindle app. Click on Remove located below and to the right of the title of the Kindle book you ve chosen. 8. Otherwise, tap Confirm checkout 9. A cover of the book, the title and expiration date will appear 10. Tap on Get for Kindle 11. The Amazon Website will open 12. Click on "Get library book" 13. The site will prompt you to sign in 14. The site will ask you to choose where to deliver your Kindle book. Choose the name of your ipad then click Continue (if you have other devices like a Kindle, iphone, ipod touch, or Android device, you have the have the option of sending your Kindle Book there). 15. Click Continue 16. Your Kindle Book will be wirelessly delivered to your device.

6 Reading your Kindle Book 1. Open your Kindle App 2. Your Kindle book will start downloading on the Kindle App s Home page 3. Tap the cover of the Kindle Book you borrowed to start reading 4. Tap the middle of the screen to access the following options: tap the Magnifying glass to search for a phrase tap the Book icon to navigate between the pages of the book and to access the table of contents, your notes and bookmarks tap Aa to adjust the font size, the background color, the brightness and the page layout Tap the two circling arrows on the bottom right corner to sync to the furthest page that you ve read Tap the arrow on the bottom left corner to go back to the most recent page read before the last sync Tap and hold the button at the bottom of the page to go back and forth between pages 5. Tap the middle of the screen again to remove the top and bottom tool bars 6. Tap the right side of the screen to advance the book 7. Tap the left side of the screen to go back a page 8. Tap the upper right corner of the screen to bookmark a page. Tap the bookmark again if you d like to remove it.

7 How to return/delete Kindle Books 1. Open Safari 2. Go to 3. Sign in with your and password 4. On the upper left corner of the page, under Shop All Departments, tap the word Kindle 5. A menu will appear. Click on Manage your Kindle which is the last item on the menu 6. A list of all the books you own and the library books you've borrowed will appear 7. Library books will be clearly labeled as "Digital library" 8. To the right of the title of the library book, you will see a button labeled "actions" 9. Tap "actions" and a drop down menu will appear 10. Tap "return this book" to return a book early (this removes the book from your library account only. A copy of the book remains in your Kindle app. When you tap the book cover, the book will open with this message: Your Kindle book loan for Title of the Book has ended ) 11. Tap actions again and tap on delete from library (this permanently deletes the book from your Kindle archive. The Kindle Archive contains all of the books you ve bought as well as covers of those you ve borrowed. Click on this option if you DON T WANT Amazon to keep track of what you ve borrowed from the library. Otherwise, a copy of the cover of the Kindle book you borrowed will remain in the archive. When you tap the cover, you ll be given the option of purchasing this book from Amazon) 12. Tap the Home button on your ipad 13. Open your Kindle App 14. Tap and hold the cover of the Kindle Book until box with the words Remove from device appears 15. Remove your finger off the book 16. Tap Remove from device 17. The book has now been deleted from your ipad

8 How to Re-Download your Kindle Book If you accidentally deleted a book from your Kindle App Home Page, you can download this book again as long as it is checked out to you and hasn t expired 1. Open Safari 2. Go to 3. On the upper left corner of the page, under Shop All Departments, tap the word Kindle 4. A menu will appear. Click on Manage your Kindle which is the last item on the menu 5. Sign In 6. To the right of the title of the library book, you will see a button labeled "Actions" 7. Tap "Actions" and a drop down menu will appear 8. Tap Deliver to My 9. Choose the name of your ipad, then tap Deliver 10. The book has been wirelessly delivered to your Kindle App How to access your Westlake Porter Digital Media Account: 1. Open Safari 2. Go to 3. Tap on My Account (located on right hand side of the dark blue bar just above the Featured ebooks) 4. Type in your library card number and log in 5. A list of options will be displayed 6. Click on My Holds to download books you ve placed on hold 7. Click on My Wish List to display books you ve added to your wish list. You can then checkout any of these books from this list when you re ready. Currently, there is NO RENEW OPTION on Overdrive. In order to borrow your Kindle Book again, you will have to go through the BORROWING PROCESS as outlined above.
