1. INTRODUCTION Increasingly, students are inquiring about how they can distinguish themselves during their education. Apart from academic curiosity, an important motive of many students is to improve their prospects of a career in education and subsequently on the labour market. Students wish to distinguish themselves in more ways than one and the university can facilitate and/or encourage this in various ways. Students attach importance to the fact that their extra efforts and results are recognised. The possibilities can be categorised as follows: Higher Marks (Cum Laude) The classic way for students to distinguish themselves is by obtaining higher marks on the study components they follow. The marks obtained are mentioned on the diploma supplement or transcript. Distinguishing performances of students are recognised through a cum laude regulation. That students value the predicate cum laude ( with distinction ) becomes manifest from the fact that they mention it, for instance, in their curriculum vitae. Extra Subjects, Minors, or Second Studies The bachelor s programme consists of three times 60 ECTS credits. Students are free to obtain additional credits by following subjects from the regular bachelor s programme. They may do so in the form of individual subjects, by following an extra minor, or by simultaneously following a second bachelor s degree programme. The extra effort and extra performance is recognised by mentioning the extra subjects together with the marks obtained, on the diploma supplement or by awarding a second bachelor s diploma. In the case of a cum laude or a double degree programme it is not education itself that aims at excellence. Rather, it is the student who excels. Subjects with Higher Exit Levels (Honours Subjects) Learning outcomes are adopted for each subject of a bachelor s programme. These learning outcomes are derived from the learning outcomes of the bachelor s degree programme. In addition, faculties can offer subjects with a higher exit level. Such additions can consist of individual subjects or tracks consisting of subjects with a raised level (so-called honours tracks). Students have to deliver a more than average effort to obtain the higher exit level. The extra effort becomes manifest through the extra number of ECTS credits that are awarded to an honours subject. The extra effort and extra performance are recognised by mentioning the honours subjects on the diploma supplement. Obtaining a VU-UvA Honours Degree The honours degree consists of a statement by VU and UvA Universities that a student complied with all the requirements of the VU-UvA. Obtaining a cum laude, following two degree programmes simultaneously, or following extra subjects are not characteristics of the curriculum. It is the student who excels and who delivers the extra effort. Conversely, in the case of the, education is offered at a higher level which anticipates the qualities of the honours students and it is 2013 Version 3
expected of the students to excel. This chapter deals with the at VU University. It describes the objectives of the programme, which parties are involved and what their responsibilities are. In addition, the quality requirements of the are formulated. 1.1 COOPERATION BETWEEN VU AND UVA UNIVERSITIES From the outset, the was designed as a joint enterprise of VU and UvA Universities. Together, the two Universities see to it that a sufficient number of honours subjects are offered. For disciplinary subjects, this responsibility lies with the Faculties. Particularly for inter-disciplinary subjects a stimulating, initiating, and coordinating role is assigned to the joint VU-UvA Honours Committee. For students the added value of the VU-UvA is determined partly by the reputation the VU-UvA has earned nationally and internationally. In this respect, the stiff supervision of quality, aimed at guaranteeing the standards of the programme, is essential. The Faculties involved shall present their s to the VU-UvA Honours Committee, including the arrangements they made to provide honours credits in a different way. After assessment by the Committee, the honours subjects are entered in a VU-UvA register of honours subjects. For current honours subjects the current practice of student assessments shall be elaborated. The Honours Committee shall also see to it that granting honours credits to regular bachelor s subjects is harmonised as much as is desirable. The Committee organises its own activities. In practice, the two Directors of Education in particular and the Director of Education of Amsterdam University College (AUC) will be entrusted with the preparation of the assessment of the levels of the honours subjects Version 4
2 OBJECTIVES, THE PARTIES INVOLVED AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES 2.1 OBJECTIVES The VU is meant for those students who, at the end of their first bachelor s year, have completed all their subjects, who have obtained an average of 7.5 out of 10, and who are motivated to follow extra subjects during their second or third year of study. In addition, students who have obtained an average of 8.0 on their VWO secondary school [Dutch university preparatory] examination can be admitted to the disciplinary honours subjects designated by the Faculty (Faculty Examination Committee). In exceptional cases it can be decided to admit a student who does not comply with the above requirements on the basis of a so-called wild card. In order to remain in the after the first year, a student must have obtained 60 ECTS credits with an average of 7.5 during the first year. In the, 30 extra ECTS credits over and above the 180 ECTS credits for the normal bachelor s programme are obtained by in-depth study of the student s own programme, and by broadening his/her interdisciplinary subjects. Students can distinguish themselves through the by following an extra programme over and above their regular bachelor s programme. The consists of a combination of more difficult subjects chosen by the students themselves that are either deeper or broader (interdisciplinary). By participating in the, honours students can obtain a VU honours degree, which means that they should obtain three times 60 regular ECTS credits plus 30 honours credits within a period of three years. For students who distinguish themselves by extra performance in another way, the extra performance is mentioned on the diploma supplement, but they are not entitled to an honours degree. Moreover, the broadening, interdisciplinary subjects belong to the core element of the so that performance which lacks this element does not qualify as honours. 2.2 WHO ARE THE PARTIES INVOLVED? honours students VU-UvA Honours Committee The Faculty Management Faculty Honours Coordinators Central VU Honours Coordinator Examination Committees Extensus, the student association for honours students of VU, UvA, and AUC. Student Council 2013 Version 5
2.3 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PARTIES INVOLVED Students can apply for the by filling in the application form available on VU University s website: After admission, honours students can register for Faculty honours subjects through the website of the Faculty considered. For inter-faculty subjects, the student should register through a registration form, see: The joint VU-UvA Honours Committee consists of two professors, two Education Directors and two students, and has the following responsibilities: Partly based on the development of the interest of students, they stimulate or initiate if necessary, and coordinate the interdisciplinary subjects on offer; To test the designated honours subjects, and the Faculty regulations with regards to obtaining honours credits in a different way, against the criteria of an honours subject and the. The committee sees to it that the subjects and the regulations are entered into a digital VU-UvA register of honours subjects and honours degree programmes; To organise an annual meta-assessment of the results of the Honours Programme of VU and UvA, and report on it to both Executive Boards; To advise both Executive Boards, either solicited or unsolicited, on the development of the ; To determine whether a student is allowed an extension to complete the bachelor s and the. The Faculty Board determines which subjects on offer in the degree programme of the Faculty comply with the standards of an honours subject and in which other way students can obtain honours credits, and informs the VU-UvA Honours Committee thereof. The Examination Committee of the study programme determines whether a student is admitted to the. The Examination Committee also determines whether a student qualifies for an honours degree. By, for instance, always appointing a second examiner alongside the lecturer or lecturers responsible Version 6
The Examination Committee explicitly ensures the level obtained by the student in the disciplinary and interdisciplinary honours subjects. The Examination Committee reports to the VU-UvA Honours Committee on how students obtain honours credits. The Faculty contact person for the coordinates the subjects offered by the different study programmes of the Faculty, and brings it in line with the supra-faculty. He or she provides the students with information on the Honours Programme and the Faculty s honours subjects. The central VU Honours Coordinator supports VU-UvA Honours Committee together with the Central Honours Coordinator of UvA. The Honours Coordinator busies himself/herself with promoting the amongst students. The association of honours students, Extensus Honours Association, is meant for honours students of VU, UvA, en AUC. It organises professional, academic, and social activities for its members. See the website The Student Council represents the students who are admitted to the and advises the Central and Faculty Honours Coordinators and the VU- UvA Honours Committee Version 7
3 QUALITY REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 QUALITY REQUIREMENTS OF THE VU HONOURS DEGREE In order to qualify for an at VU University, a student must comply with the following conditions: He/she should be selected for participation in the (See Paragraph 3.2 Quality Requirements of the VU ); He/she should have delivered additional effort at honours level during his/her bachelor s studies equal to at least 30 ECTS credits for recognised honours subjects and/or for components of regular bachelor s subjects whose levels were raised and which were designated as such by the Honours Committee. He/she should obtain twelve to eighteen ECTS credits for the additional effort, depending on the study programme, in interdisciplinary honours subjects recognised by the Committee or for components with raised levels designated as such; He/she should have obtained the bachelor s diploma within the nominal duration of the course; He/she should have obtained an average of at least 7.5 out of 10 for all bachelor s subjects. Explanation In order to qualify for an Honours Degree, students must obtain three times 60 regular ECTS credits as well as 30 honours credits. Students can obtain the necessary 30 honours credits in different ways: In the classic way, by completing the recognised honours subjects that are offered separate from the regular bachelor s programme. These subjects only provide honours credits. In case a student wishes to qualify for an honours degree, these subjects do not count for the regular curriculum. They are exclusively available to honours students 1 By following the regular bachelor s subjects to which an honours component has been added. With the added honours component, the student completes the subject at a demonstrably higher, honours level. For such a subject the student obtains the regular number of bachelor s credits. For the extra effort to complete the subject at honours level, an a priori2 determined number of extra honours credits are awarded. These subjects are open to all students. This does not apply to teaching that refers specifically to the honours component. 1 If an honours student decides not to complete an, the obtained honours subjects need not be lost. A student can, for instance, use them for his/her optional courses. It goes without saying that permission must be obtained from the Exmination Committee involved. 2 In practice, separate subject codes will be used for the subject or element with the raised level Version 8
By following bachelor s subjects that as a whole aim at a higher, honours level and that are integrated in the bachelor s curriculum at the same time. Often such subjects will be part of an honours track or of a two-track system where the honours bachelor runs parallel to the regular curriculum. The students receive the number of ECTS credits that are also awarded for the corresponding subjects in the regular curriculum. For the extra effort students make to realise the higher level, they are awarded additional honours credits. Here too, the number of honours credits is also delivered a-priori. 3.2 QUALITY REQUIREMENTS OF THE VU HONOURS STUDENTS In order to qualify as an honours student and to be admitted to the, a student must comply with one of the following conditions: He/she must have obtained 60 ECTS credits with an average of 7.5 out of 10 during the first year of the bachelor s programme; A student, who has completed the VWO secondary school [Dutch university preparatory] examination with an average of 8.0, can be admitted to disciplinary honours subjects to be detailed by a Faculty (Faculty Examination Committee). In order to remain in the after the first year, the student should obtain 60 ECTS credits in the first year with an average of 7.5. A student can be admitted on the basis of a wild card. The Faculty s Examinations Committee can admit students to the on the basis of personal performance. The Examination Committee involved informs the VU-UvA Honours Committee by means of a substantiated notice. If desirable, the Faculty can, in addition to the above conditions, include the intrinsic motivation of a student in the admission decision. This motivation must be expressed in the form of a motivation interview, a letter of motivation, a specific assignment, etc. 3.3 QUALITY REQUIREMENTS OF THE VU HONOURS SUBJECTS The characteristics of the honours subjects are that: They educate to a demonstrably higher level; They can be either broadening (interdisciplinary) or deepening (disciplinary); They are visible as independent (research intensive) honours subjects; Minimal entry requirements are applicable on the basis of students past performance; The language of instruction is English, unless the content of the subject requires a different language Version 9
The higher level of honours subjects must be demonstrable on the basis of the following characteristics: the substantive quality of the programme; the challenging calibre of the teaching methods; the creative and pioneering calibre of the programme; attention to academic competencies; the cohesion of Intellectual, societal, and personal training; the intensity and meaningfulness of the contact with lecturers and guest lecturers; where applicable: the additional admission criteria (necessary prior knowledge) and the selection procedure or priority rules; The supporting faculty system with regards to honours education, in particular recruiting, monitoring, and counselling honours students, including mentorship. These requirements apply to all honours subjects, thus they also apply to combinations of subjects for which honours credits can be awarded. Accessibility of Honours Subjects Deepening/disciplinary honours subjects can be made available to non-honours students provided they comply with the general entry requirements for the ; the decision to make these subjects available lies with the Faculty involved. In case of insufficient capacity of a subject, honours students are given priority. Interdisciplinary honours subjects are reserved for honours students. Only if there are places available can these be offered to other students, provided these students comply with the general conditions of admission to the. The decision lies with the VU-UvA Honours Committee, on the recommendation of the primary accountable lecturer or Programme Director involved. The completed honours subjects are mentioned as such on the diploma supplement. 3.4 QUALITY REQUIREMENTS OF THE COOPERATION BETWEEN VU AND UVA At VU and UvA an identical set of requirements and standards for an honours degree applies; At VU and UvA an identical set of requirements and standards for honours subject applies; 2013 Version 10
At VU and UvA an identical set of requirements and standards of entry and exit requirements for the applies; Both Universities honours subjects are accessible to Both Universities students. Admission can, however, be limited to students of one or more specific degree programme, provided the limitation applies to both Universities. By setting these requirements, VU and UvA jointly protect the terms honours subject,, honours student and Honours Degree QUALITY ASSURANCE OF HONOURS SUBJECTS An honours degree issued by VU University means that the distinctiveness of the Honours Degree is guaranteed. Since the variation in honours subjects is increasing, this aspect requires more attention: honours subjects are part of the education offered by a Faculty. For disciplinary honours subjects, the responsibility for the quality guarantee lies with the Faculty. For interdisciplinary subjects, a lead 4 Faculty is appointed by VU University. In terms of quality assurance, it concerns guaranteeing: Increased/stiffer requirements of the learning outcomes with which the honours subjects and the honours credits must comply; this also applies to individual subjects such as requirements of bachelor s theses so that they also count towards an Honours Degree; Supervision of the quality of the examinations administered (which includes the assessment of the final thesis at honours level); Admitting students to the (in so far deviations from the general criteria are concerned). Supervision of the quality of honours subjects and honours credits is in line as much as possible with the regular quality supervision in Faculties. The specific character of honours subjects is expressed in the recognition of honours subjects by a joint VU-UvA Honours Committee and entry in a VU-UvA honours register. This register also includes the other, recognised, possibilities of obtaining honours credits. The Examination Committee involved explicitly supervises the level obtained by the students in disciplinary and interdisciplinary honours subjects, for instance, by always appointing a second examiner alongside the responsible lecturer or lecturers; 3 This leads to a joint description of an honours subject and an honours degree for the benefit of the diploma supplement. 4 The lead Faculty is the Faculty which appoints the ultimately accountable lecturer. At UvA the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) offers most of the interdisciplinary subjects Version 11
The Faculty Board/Dean determines which subjects amongst those offered by the degree programme of the Faculty comply with the standards of an honours subject, and in which other ways students can obtain honours credits. The Faculty Board informs the VU-UvA Honours Committee hereof; On the basis of the subject descriptions the VU-UvA Honours Committee tests whether a subject or regulation complies with the set requirements and whether it can be included in the VU-UvA register of honours subjects and honours degree programmes; The Examination Committees are requested to make arrangements for the supervision of the level achieved by students in honours subjects and for the way in which students obtain honours credits, and to report thereof to the joint VU-UvA Honours Committee. The quality supervision for interdisciplinary honours subjects is accommodated by the Faculty where the primary accountable lecturer is appointed Version 12
