3 Introduction BioOne contains a wealth of scholarly and peer-reviewed content in the biological, ecological and environmental sciences. This tip sheet is designed to help researchers take maximum advantage of end user functionality in BioOne through the creation and usage of a My BioOne account. My BioOne Account 3
4 Why Create a My BioOne Account? Creating an individual account gives researchers full access to the end user functionality built into the BioOne site. Users can: o build lists of Favorite Journals and Favorite articles; o save searches for later use; o receive alerts when new content is posted; o track citations; and o download citations via your favorite citation manager program. Registering a My BioOne Account From the BioOne homepage, select Log In. Note: To register, you must validate access from your home institution. On the Log in page, select Register Now (Fig. 1). You will be prompted to enter your address and supply a password (Fig. 2). You may then give us more information about yourself and sign-up and receive the latest in BioOne news, delivered directly to your account. Select Submit. Your My BioOne account is now ready for use. Once you have registered your account, go to the Log in page, enter your address and password and select Log in to access your account. My BioOne Account 4

6 Accessing and Navigating Your My BioOne Account From the BioOne homepage, select Log in. On the Log in page, enter your address and password and select Log in (Fig. 1). After successful log in, you will be taken to your account navigation page (Fig. 3). Select any tab to move within your account. You may return to your account page from anywhere on the BioOne site by selecting My BioOne on the upper right corner of the screen. FIGURE 3. My BioOne Account 6
7 Creating a List of Favorite Journals Select the Journals tab (Fig. 4). Using the pull down menu, choose a title. Select Add this Journal to Favorites. The title will now display in your list of Favorite Journals (Fig. 5). You may view lists of issues associated with your Favorite Journals. A Favorite Journals list is also helpful as a search filter. When executing a search, you may choose to search only within the titles on your list. FIGURE 4. My BioOne Account 7

9 Creating a List of Favorite Articles To add articles to your list, execute a search and view the results set. From the results set, select the article(s) for addition (Fig. 6).. FIGURE 6. My BioOne Account 9

Once an article has been added, you can: o view the article s abstract; o track the article s citation; o download the citation to a citation manager; and o the article to colleagues (Figs. 7 and 8). 12 Creating and Using Tables of Contents Alerts Use this feature to receive: o Alerts when new content is made available on the site; o Alerts when future content listings are announced; and o Citation alerts for the journals of your choice. Adding a Title to Your List of Alerts Choose the title(s) from the list of journals, and then select Submit (Fig. 9). You will now receive alerts as content for your chosen titles are added to the BioOne site. FIGURE 9. My BioOne Account 12
13 Creating Citation Alerts and Tracking Citations To create an alert and track a citation, select the citation from your list of Favorite Articles (Fig. 10). Select Track Citation. You will be given an option to subscribe to the RSS Feed for the citation. Select Subscribe to this feed. Your article will now be tracked, and you will receive notices when the article has been cited. FIGURE 10. My BioOne Account 13
14 Saving Searches You may opt to save frequently executed searches for later use. Give the search term a name and a description; choose if you want to receive alert notices as new articles matching your term are added, and then select Save. You may then run saved searches, remove those searches, and/or monitor how often the searches have been executed (Fig. 11). FIGURE 11. My BioOne Account 14
15 Modifying Account Information Select the Account Info tab (Fig. 12). Here you can: o Change your address and password; o Choose to receive announcements; and o Edit your profile to give BioOne information about yourself your subject interests, etc. FIGURE 12.
