In another case, the student told the tutor that her math teacher had taught the class a strategy for determining the order of operations, and she just needed help if she became stuck. The tutor provided guided support as the student applied the strategy to the assignment. In still another situation, the student came to tutoring very upset with her performance in math and did not want to do any math assignment work. The tutor treated the session as a mentoring opportunity and proceeded to guide the student through a goal-setting and action-planning activity.
