OF Cables: Storage, Handling & Installation General Guidelines Introduction: The document is prepared to provide guidelines for storage, handling and Installation of Optical Fiber cables to decrease the chances for accidental damages to cables and personnel during transportation and handling, and to ensure proper life of cables. Fiber Optic Cables are sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, twisting, and crushing / impact forces. Any such damage may alter the Fiber characteristics and detrimental to its performance. Cable Handling: Optical Fiber cables are prone to damages due to improper handling and such damages can degrade the cable performance. Therefore the following guidelines may be useful to follow: i) Storage: The cable drums should always be stored in an upright position, resting it vertically on cable flange edge and not in horizontal position. The wooden drums are wrapped around with wood lagging strips to protect the cable damage during rolling on rough surfaces and absorb minor impacts. The stacking of drums is also very important. Correct position for storage Incorrect position for storage Correct position for stacking Incorrect position for stacking Page # 1

ii) Cable Handling: During transportation, the cable drum should not be kept in a flat horizontal position, as it can crush the down layers of the cable resulting into Fiber breakage. It should be kept vertically resting on its flange edges. INCORRECT Above is incorrect method of Transportation. The CORRECT method for stacking / loading for transportation is as below: Do not drop cable for unloading, instead use ramp or crane NO DROPPING Page # 2

Handling using Fork-lift: If a Forklift is used for movement of drums, it must be done in a proper manner to avoid any damage to cable. The fork must not make any direct contact with the cable jacket. The following explains a correct method of handling using forklift: Rolling direction of Drums: It is important to note that the cable drum must be rolled in the direction of rolling as marked on the cable drum to avoid any loosening of the cable on the reel (that may lead to development of kinks or high attenuation in the fiber characteristics). Page # 3

Removal of cable from the Drum: Suitable care should be taken while unreeling or uncoiling the cable from the drum to avoid any reverse bending or twisting that may cause torsion to the cable, which can cause internal damage to the fiber leading to deterioration in its performance characteristics. Drum should be placed on a jack or a stand with a bar through the center hole of the drum allowing it to turn it easily for cable pay-off. The pay out can be from the bottom or from top Similar practice may be used for cable in coils. An installation technique commonly used is where the cable is coiled on the ground in Figure 8 configuration. This method permits pulling of cable in both the directions from a central location. The Figure 8 coil should be at least 10M by 5M and should be protected from passers by. When long length of coil is required to be unreeled, there is a possibility that the weight of the coil may damage the cable at the bottom. This can be prevented by spreading the cable out in several figure 8 coils. In order to pull the cable out from Figure 8 coils, it is sometimes necessary to turn it over to expose the cable end. Page # 4

iii) iv) Preparation for installation: It is advised to check all fibers for optical continuity and attenuation. In any case, the drum should be inspected for optical continuity and attenuation and for any physical damage due to storage / handling in store. Any defect or discrepancy should be analyzed and brought to attention of manufacturer/supplier. The outside of flanges are stenciled with various information like Drum no., Length code, Top/Bottom meter markings, no. of Fibers and this information should be recorded and checked for correctness. Duct / Direct Buried Cables Installation: The following may be observed: Take OTDR measurements on all fibers Before pulling the cable, make sure that ducts are clean. Maintain the proper direction as marked for rolling on the drum. Check operating temperature (generally between -20 Deg C to 70 Deg C. Cable should be pulled out and kept in the form of Fig 8. Apply suitable compatible lubricant for smooth blowing. Accelerate slowly and smoothly to a constant blowing/pulling speed. Monitor and maintain the pulling tension as specified for cable rating. Do not exceed the max pulling tension beyond specified limits Do not bend the cable beyond its recommended limits (> 20 D) Avoid longer length pulls or blowing (recommended 1 Km) Use swivel tool in between pulling eye and pulling rope to avoid cable twisting Maintain proper communication and coordination among blowing and pulling crew. Leave adequate extra length for jointing/splicing wherever required. Take OTDR measurements on all Fibers after installation. Page # 5

v) CATV Aerial Cable Installation: Make proper arrangements for an adequate extra length of cable at the pole position for testing and jointing. Minimize and take into account all types of movements whether produced by cable weight, thermal changes, wind / ice loading etc as these produce strain on the fiber. Personnel going to poles should wear safety strap at all times. Ensure that sufficient clearance is maintained between Fiber optic cable and other utility cable/wire when installation is on common pole. Examine the ability of the existing pole to withstand the installation work. Cable containing steel wire strength member should be electrically grounded. Ensure that cable s rated pulling strength is not exceeded The CATV access broadband cable cannot take long span, hence is should be installed along with an external messenger wire. The CATV cable should be clamped to the support messenger wire at 3-5 Meter interval such that there is some excess length between each clamp. Keep this extra length as 2-3% sag between each clamp. Due to thermal expansion and contraction of steel messenger wire, this extra sag length will avoid putting strain on fiber. Take OTDR measurements before and after installation Page # 6
