6 ITS ALL ABOUT ERGONOMICS Ergonomics applies information about human behaviour, abilities and limitations and other characteristics to the design of tools, machines, tasks, jobs and environments for productive, safe, comfortable and effective human use (McCormick and Saunders 1993). The goal of Ergonomics is to provide maximum productivity with minimal cost relating to the physiological state or health of the worker. The goal for the design of workplaces is to design for as many people as possible without compromising on safety, health and comfort. 21 DESIGNER BIO Brian Steinhobel The subtle nuances of high design, driven by cutting edge technology, sub-conscious and conscious psychologies, ergonomics, anthropometrics, computer aided design (CAD), manufacturing technologies, marketing strategies, legal intellectual property and contractual issues, business and entrepreneurial skills and a plethora of dynamic symbiotic influences must all be orchestrated and culminate in products that will impact for the betterment of civilisation. With a career spanning 30 years, Brian Steinhobel is a highly respected industrial design consultant, and has worked with a number of recognised local and international clients spanning a number of industries including furniture, automotive, aerospace, medical, mining, electronic, consumer goods and sporting equipment. Brian has won numerous coveted local and international awards, and has judged and continues to judge a number of design competitions in South Africa and around the world including the Australian Design Awards, the British D&AD Awards, the German Braun Design Prize, and the South African Bureau of Standards Design Awards. 19
