COURSES IN ENGLISH Universidad del Desarrollo offers each semester different courses taught completely in English. These courses are intended for international students and also for UDD students. For the second semester 2012 (August-December), we are offering the following courses taught completely in English: Experiential Marketing Course Code: EELI465 section 1 Teacher: Hernán Millas Dates: Mondays (modules 2-3) This course will help you gain a full understanding of the power of experiential marketing and its place as part of the brand manager s toolbox. You will be shown case studies to explain exactly what experiential really is and to learn how this new and growing media can be used as part of marketing, PR and advertising to grow more active consumer engagement for brands. Key topics such as outcome vs. output and how experiential can be used as the lead idea in any campaign will also be covered. International Organizations Course Code: LCP323 section 2 Teacher: Provi Caraballo Dates: Mondays (modules 2-3) This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of international organizations. Giving attention to the global context in which international institutions function, attention will be given to the political, social, economic and legal environment within which multilateral organizations operate. The course structure will consist of lectures and guided discussion, interactive group activities and guest lecturers from leading experts currently working for world renowned international organizations. Marketing II Course Code: ENA414 section 3 Teacher: Manfred Brauchle Q. Dates: Tuesdays (modules 6-7) This course seeks to provide an understanding of the two major activities related to marketing strategy; the first involves selecting the target market and achieving the desired positioning; the second major activity involves specifying the tactical components of any marketing plan: the marketing mix or 4 P s (product, pricing, place/channels and promotion). Therefore, a significant part of this course will be devoted to analyze in-depth the 4 P s concepts and their strategic implications in order to facilitate the student s future decision making. To the extent possible, additional areas of emphasis in the course will include concepts such as differentiation, customer value, branding, and understanding issues related to consumer behavior and customer analysis. The course will emphasize both theoretical and practical elements. Organizational Development Course Code: EDO421 section 3 Teacher: Alessandra Castillo Dates: Tuesdays (modules 7-8) The students are to understand and comprehend the elements, strategies and processes

of organizational change. We will use cases, exercises and textbook material to help you analyze the change process and integrate the knowledge gained in the course to apply to organizational challenges once you become professionally employed or entrepreneur in society. You must realize that organizations are always at risk when making changes and when failing to do so. Individuals within organizations are also at risk when supporting change or when resisting it. Principles of Economics The goal of this course is to understand how resources are allocated in a functioning market economy. This course will allow you to become knowledgeable of, and able to think critically about, the basic concepts and theories of microeconomics and macroeconomics, including trade, demand and supply, elasticity, consumer, firm behavior, market structure, national accounts, inflation, unemployment, business cycles, etc. Finance I The goal of this course is to allow students to understand the different concepts of Financial Theory, allowing them to solve applied financial problems y adopt rational decisionswithin the Accounting and Finance areas. After the theoretical and applied learning activities, students are expected to identify the value of the developed knowledge and identify them as necessary for the development of an analytical view of strategic issues of a company and the supporting of decision making. This course is part of the second study cycle named Licenciatura and it s directly related to the course Finance II. The course requires understanding mathematic, accounting and economic principles, as well as basic word processing, presentation, spreadsheet and social media software. Management Consulting This course prepares students with a comprehensive introduction to effective management principles and conduct. It not only aims at providing students with an introduction to contemporary management concepts and skills, it also encourages students to put these concepts and skills into practice. Through the course, students are expected to improve their skills to manage their study and personal lives. In addition, they will be equipped with management competence and understanding of managerial ethics for their future career. Also prepare students on how to handle change and how to innovate and act entrepreneurially. The course aims to provide students with an understanding of change and entrepreneurship within organizations, and to develop an active approach in dealing with external and internal change as well as in seizing entrepreneurial opportunities. ELECTIVE COURSES International Business Course Code: EEI343 section 1 Teacher: Gustavo Contesse Dates: Wednesdays (modules 2-3) The general purpose of this course is to understand that contemporary environments in business are more competitive and global; they are accelerated and depend of an intensive knowledge of these environments. The use of effective human capital is critical to succeed and survive a company. In this course the students will learn practical topics to

planning and executing strategies to create an organization that wants to face the globalization. The main purpose of this course is to analyze the role and impact of international business practices into the business development, and to discuss how cultural and behavioral differences influence countries business practices. Social Entrepreneurship Course Code: EEI346 section 1 Teacher: Leslie Forman Dates: Tuesdays (modules 5-6) Social entrepreneurship is a rapidly developing business field in which leaders design, grow, and lead mission-driven enterprises. These enterprises aim to build innovative solutions to issues such as education, healthcare, and unemployment. These topics are complex, and often there is not a single right answer. The course will begin with an overview of how entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists, foundations, and consulting firms have built and defined the field of social entrepreneurship. Next, students will examine their own backgrounds and experiences from a social entrepreneurship perspective. Then, we will study the essentials of design thinking and the business model canvas, and examine case studies through this lens. For the course's final project, students will work together in groups to design new social enterprises. Negotiation and Deal Making Course Code: EEI344 section 1 Teacher: Larissa Fedorova Dates: Mondays (modules 7-8) This course builds skill at negotiating and making deals. It s basically a course devoted to making you better at arguing and getting your way. Negotiating well certainly means getting what you want, but as we ll see, it also means paying attention to what others want. In business, seeing deals from all sides opens up opportunities for creative solutions that allow all parties to get more and the same goes for personal deals. In business, however, there is usually a healthy element of competition, so beyond creative thinking, it is also important to know how to use other tools to negotiate deals so that you get agreements that are good for you. Business Strategy Course Code: EEI341 section 1 Teacher: Manfred Brauchle Q. Dates: Fridays (modules 5-6) The subject Business Strategy is focused in four main tasks. The first task is to provide the students with an understanding of the primary roles and responsibilities of the top management inside an organization, in formulating business strategies, and in building and sustaining competitive advantage. The second task is for the students to gain insights of the fundamental issues involved with integrating and coordinating the activities of different functional areas, such as marketing, manufacturing, R&D, accounting, HR management and finance, and to make them work together in a strategy execution context. The third task is to introduce the students to the frameworks and tools commonly used in developing and assessing business strategies. And finally, developing students decision making skills from the perspective of top management.

Chilean Culture Course Code: ROD125 section 1 Teacher: Alfonso Cortés Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays (module 4) The course on Chilean Culture has the intention to bring students near to the study and comprehension of the cultural development of Chile as a nation and its resulting identity, understanding that it becomes such as a product of a complex relations network between social, political, cultural and economic processes, both national and international. It also focuses on how different cultural expressions convey aspects of the same culture. In order to achieve this goal, the course is structured to first attain a basic theoretical framework, then briefly revising Chilean cultural evolution during the 19th and 20th centuries to finally focus on the analysis of different cultural expressions while also opening a debate about current Chilean culture and identity, including the situation about indigenous peoples. Introduction to Latin American Art Course Code: RIO142 section 1 Teacher: Bernardita Mandiola Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays (module 4) Latin American Art is a product of many races and nations that mixed and influenced our artistic heritage. This complex multi-cultural heritage will be viewed though its visual artistic manifestations. This course also aims to instruct students in the basic concepts of artistic movements that originated in Latin America, as well as how these movements influence other regions. Artistic movements and/or manifestations have social, political, cultural and economic influences and we will study how these influences show up in the artistic representations. This class will also focus on understanding the origins of these artistic manifestations and how the blending of these origins with other influences make up Latin American Art. Globalization and Its Impact (OD Minor) Course Code: LOD185I section 1 Teacher: Provi Caraballo Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays (module 4) This course is designed to help prepare students for thinking globally. The aim of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to discuss diverse theories and practices of globalization. The course considers the theoretical and practical sources that underpin various contemporary debates on globalization, for example, free trade versus fair trade, democracy versus capitalism, technological revolution versus ecological risk, the state versus civil society and national liberation versus cosmopolitanism. Not only will this course demonstrate the global dimensions of several crucial contemporary issues, including the problem of global conflict, the global environment, and health and population concerns, it also will underline the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to understanding these issues, and facilitate students to develop their own vision of globalization.

Politics, Culture and Society of the United States Course Code: RIO146 section 1 Teacher: Kevin Munger Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays (module 4) This course seeks to explore the current politics of the United States through the lens of history. The United States is famously a two-party system, but those two parties are made up of a constantly shifting set of factions. We will examine the prevailing culture of the two parties today, leading up to the 2012 election. Each faction s current allegiance will be traced through history, especially recent history, using primary source documents whenever possible. This course will demonstrate that a full understanding of United States politics requires a broad socio-historical background.
