Acrylic Painting Techniques

Preparing your Palette Your artist palette should be clean and dry before you begin Scoop a small amount of acrylic paint (red, blue, yellow, black & white) onto your palette using the wooden sticks (Never use your brush!) Make sure none of your colours are touching! Mix your secondary colours (take out your colour wheel from September!)

Colour Wheel Review: What Are the three primary colours? What are the three secondary colours? What are the six tertiary colours?

1. Create a value scale using a secondary colour in the space below. Add black (shade) and white (tint) to your hue. Colour+White Secondary Colour Colour+Black

2. Drybrush is a painting technique which uses a dry paintbrush and very little paint. An artist s brushstrokes are visible with this technique!

3. A glaze is a delicate layer of colour produced by adding water or a glaze medium to paint. Glazes are subtle and transparent. Artists layer glazes on top of each other in order to produce a rich, layer of colours. The famous painting, The Mona Lisa, was produced using this technique. Leonardo DaVinci. The Mona Lisa, ( ).

4. Impasto is a technique which uses a thick amount of paint applied to a canvas or support. To experiment with impasto, apply a heavy coat of paint to your brush and daub it onto your paper. When the paint dries, there will be an actual texture to the surface of your painting. Jane Frank, "Crags and Crevices" (1960).

5. Shading with Paints Choose ONE colour (you may want to pick the dominant colour of your monochromatic Painting) and shade in the circle on your page so that it looks like a 3-dimensional sphere. You will need to mix all of the shades, tints, and tones of your chosen colour. Remember to consider the light source!! (The direction the light is falling on your object!) Light Source
